paul If we are talking about impact that we are still living with today then the emancipation and financial empowerment of women was the most significant event of the 20th century.
Pankhurst and Sanger make the list.
Two names that do not are Ayn rand and Alan greenspan.
Rand developed the ideas of objetivism a philosophy that asserts that autrism is nonsence and that mans natural reason for living is self interest.
Greenspan was one of rands inner circle deciples and went on to advise 5 presidents.
While Bill clinton was struggling with his sexual peccadilos Greenspan was busy with the triffling matter of running the world economy and unleashing the idea that greed is good.
I would argue that the last quarter of the 20th century right up to the present day was largely influenced by the ideas of Rand made reality by Greenspan.

iain i think your list is absolute rubbish. for example frank sinatra more influential than the beatles, he sang their songs. the most influential politician or leader was adolf hitler. alan tuning would probably never existed unless alexander fleming dicovered penicilin, the first isreali prime minister isnt important at all. 3/19/2011
chris None of the above can be said to have the impact that the assassin Gavrilo Princip had. It was his bullet that set into motion the whole chain of tremendous events that led to the premature deaths of hundreds of millions worldwide. He ignited WWI which brought about the fall of the Tsar and the rise of bolshevism, which in turn led to the reaction to it, Fascism, then to WWII which most see as a continuation of the First World war, which brings us to the quick invention of the atomic bomb, and finally the cold war. All of the above figures, while influential and appreciated, can not be said to have impacted the lives of so many millions over such a long period of time. 12/27/2010
