Qatgirl Hi! I'm just reading this post in 2008. Man o' War and War Admiral are now both interred at the Kentucky Horse Park. The tragic murder of Ferdinand inspired thousands of people to take a stand on horse slaughter. The Thoroughbred rescue group, Old Friends, was started as a direct response to Ferdinand's death.

I met Ferdinand, the year he retired to Claiborne. He was so beautiful! And a very sweet, friendly horse. His death hit me very hard. It is perhaps part of the reason that my husband and I have given a home to two retired racehorses, adopted off the track. Yes, they do require some special handling perhaps, and definitely additional training ("rehab" some might say!). But definitely WORTH IT!

Darlene Branden I'm so heartbroken over the thought of what happened to Ferdinand. I wish we wouldn't sell animals to the japannese or chinese. They don't have the same respect for life as we do here in the United States of America 5/27/2008
Miranda Umm this is a very interesting story. 1/23/2006
Delyth Davies-Warman Having watched the film 'Seabiscuit' last weekend, I too came out of the cinema wondering his fate. I was therefore thrilled to read Diane Himelblau's account of the remainder of Seabiscuit's life (not that it was a particularly long life for a horse, with his demise at the age of 14). I was saddened and disgusted however to read of the fate of Ferdinand in Japan. I wonder if the Japanese horse racing industry has made any comment as to how a race horse such as Ferdinand could have met such a cruel end. Could he not have been put out to pasture out of respect for his service to the racing industry? 11/19/2003
