about the public vs. private funding, i consider it fair , since straight people are the ones rejecting GLBT students, that they should be funding these kind of schools. Stop harassing gay people and they won't have to hide in gay schools. Hmm, maybe the Church should fund because they are the ones behind the whole rejection policy. As far as the "equal rights" go, you have forgotten something: Yes, all students should have equal rights to education (thus equal funding) but at the same time, all students have the right to being treated equally, they have the same rights to physical and emotional safety. |

I'm done with school, I'm on my way home. Walking out of the gates of my Gay High School just stamps "beat the snot out of me" right onto my forehead. I don't know, it seems like a bad idea. Not only do the anti-gays know exactly where you are now, there's no way to deny you're gay, and all of your friends are now concentrated into one spot so they can get you all at once! Nice! |

This idea is not so good. If you think about it, it's not right because being gay is committing a sin and they not making it no better. Also i dont think it's a good idea because it's not fair to open up a school for gays, lesbians, and transgender. If that's the case, Then they should open up a all boys, girls, whites, blacks, mexicans, and etc. That my reasons for disagreeing with this situation. |

I think it is a great idea. Coming up in a world that chooses not to accept us for who we are, then we must create our own world where we all feel comfortable and have the freedom to express ourselves. We are not different, but while the world is fighting to acknowledge us as equal than we must live create our norm. I support Gay high schools 100%. |

I think that it is great that gay kids can now experience a degree of natural developmental freedom during their teens. We need something like that in Australia. New York is so ahead of its time. |

Yeah, there are some mistakes. Sorry, but I do know how to spell. Let me try and correct them...were should be are...it should be they...add an "l" to schoo...Monorities should be minorities...comma after lesson...we haven't come that far should be, we've yet to come that far...comma after is...comma after learn...lol...WOW! |

Hello, I am wirting, not really in response to the opinions shared by others, but because of the horrible grammar. I am not sure of the education level that you all have, but it seems to me that if you were so intent on sharing your thoughts, you could at least make sure that it is spelled and punctuated correctly. On to something more serious. I am a gay male myself and I see both sides of the matter. I think that in high schoo, as well as the world, gays are more likely to be unaccepted as opposed to accepted. They are a minority and that is the norm for moniorities in this country. I understand that it does destract one from learing their lesson when they have classmates whispering insults into their ears, but at the same time, what is expected in the "real-world?" I hope for, but see no real change in the near future. For as much as we hope that society would grow to accept others for who they are, we haven't come very far. I think that kids should be taught in a non-segregated enviroment, which is what a "gay school" is so they have the benefits of learning to handle the pressure of oposition early on. I do agree, however, that the enviroment in which these kids are to learn should be one of tolerance and humility. Thanks.....oh, by the way, I am 18. Bye. |

I don't give a crap if you're gay or not. You should not get more rights than me. Read Orson Wells' book "Animal Farm": "All animals are equal, some are more equaller than others." Just what the hell is a federally funded high school other than a violation of my civil rights? Besides, all "close-minded heteros that hate anything not like them" will most likely target the entire school for mass hate crimes. Cheese and Rice! Did none of you study history? All of you are just sitting ducks. Think about it... how stupid is it for dear to congregate in a centralized area while hunters have plenty of buckshot? Not very. Plus, as I said before, you want a "Homo High" then privately fund it. I don't want to pay for this, but my livelyhood is based on letting discrimination happen. Screwed up, huh? Respond please, somebody please try to talk me down. |

i cant stand the fact that homosexuals get there own school. If the tax payers have to pay for this perverted crap i'm going to freak. were is this country going, a country thats so confused and backwards that homosexuals are getting special treatment. I thaught that all the hippies were dead. i'm a republican conservitive and a devoted cristian and i will be damned if in my life time homosexuals are socially accepted. |

i think this is one of the greatest ideas being a bisexual myself but i live in nj. can i come visit sometime for a day or something, im a sophomore in highschool, actually its a magnet school called the Academy for Visual and Preforming Arts at Boonton High School. it is a great academy. i love it there. i agree with your choice to make a homosexual high school. i would have done it myself. i am interested in fasion design, do you have any classes i could take. i would love to visit the high school because i am doing a project about discrimination and hate crimes against gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender kids, teens, and adults. i really hope you can get back to me on this. my email adress is Feyloverboi@yahoo.com |

I know first hand the trials and tribulations of homosexuality because I am an open lesbian. I understand that homosexual high schools are intended to make the student more comfortable. I believe that this strategy is an okay notion. In retrospect I also feel as if students will not be able to focus on their academics due to the raging hormones and open environment for exploration. But you truly never know until you try. |

Alright, first of all there CAN'T (sorry for the original error) be discrimination in a facility based off of federal funds. I'm a straight student and my rights declared in the Constitution and Bill of Rights state that I have the same right as any homosexual student to enter a public school. If the homo population wants a school get GLAD or RAINBOW to fund a PRIVATE school. The whole thing pisses me off more based on the fact that you gays wanted "equal rights" and all that jazz, but now you're taking my tax dollars away from programs that I need, so you can have "equal-er" rights. It's a huge bunch of crap. Just like affirmative action, this is a hypocritical action for liberal homos to get their way. |

I am gay and live in california. school for me is hell. i get picked on everyday and cant do anything about it because there just too many of them. I think have a school only for gay and lasbians is perfect because weve tried to mix homos with straights and so far it hasnt worked for the majority of us. maybe a few get by withount getting picked on for being different but it not like being fat. yes people who are fat get picked on for it. but the dont jump them or even kill them. gays do get jumped and some have been killed. so opening a school for gays only is a great idea. and the money means nothing if it keeps people alive ,safe, and around people who understand oneanother. |

WOW, THAT'S LIKE TAKING THE EASY WAY OUT, IN FACT ALOMOST LIKE LOOSING A BATTLE. i WOULD LIKE TO SEE GAY STUDENTS, ALONG STRAIGHTS ONES IN OUR PUBLICS SCHOOLS SINCE ITS THE ONLY WAY A STRAIGHT PERSON IS GOING TO UNDERSTAND AND LEARNED FROM A GAY PERSON. SAPARTISM WILL ONLY MAKE THE STIGMA GREATER THEN WHAT ALREADY IS AND BESIDES ARE WE REALLY DIFFERENT FROM ANY OTHER HUMAN BEING, I DON'T THINK SO. I'M GAY BUT I DON'T BASE MY WHOLE PARSONA SIMPLY ON THE FECT THAT I CHOOSE TO SLEEP WITH THE SAME SEX; THERES MORE TO ME THEN MY SEXUAL ORENTATION. gOING SEPARATE IS JUST SIMPLY AN EASY WAY OUT, HOW ABOUT ADDING COURSES OF RESPECT AND COMPATION TO OUR SCHOOLS. tHIS WOULD HAVE BEEN THE SMART THING TO DO. i'M TRULLY DISSAPOINTED WITH THE NY SCHOOL ADDMINISTRATORS AND HOPE CALIFORNIA NEVER MAKES THE SAME MISTAKE.. |

I think if you expect Americans to pay for this freak show, it is a sign of the end!! This is all the result of segregating the word of Jesus Christ from our public school systems. Lord Help Us!!! |

I think it is a really good idea. Because all the gays and lesbians always get made fun of. And just becauase they are not like us. Dont give other people the right to do that to them. I myself have a gay kid in my school and he is very nice. I treat him just like I would any other person. I really do think this is a good idea. And we should keep it this way. And if Gays and Lesbians want to go to a normal school they can. |

I AM GOING TO BE HONEST ABOUT THIS ISH; YOU SAY THE REASON FOR BUILDING THE SCHOOL WAS TO MAKE IT SAFE FOR ALL OF THE GAYS AND LESBIAN B/C THEY ARE CONSTANTLY BEATEN UPON IN PUBLIC SCHOOL. NOW, I BEG TO DIFFER. I AM A HOMOSEXUAL AND ATTENED NUMEROUS SCHOOL IN BROOKLYN, NY AND WAS NEVER PICKED ON BY ANYONE. I CAN BE A OBVIOUSLY GAY INDIVIDUAL AT TIMES, HOWEVER, NO ONE MANAGED TO BOTHER ME. THE ONLY GAYS THAT DO GET BOTHERED ARE THOSE THAT PUT THEMSELVES OUT THERE TO BE PH*CKED WITH. IF YOU BOTHER SOMEONE WHO IS NOT OF THE GAY LIFE, THEN OF COURSE YOU ARE GONNA GET HIT. THE GAY HIGH SCHOOL IS A BUNCH OF BULL CRAP. THERE ARE OTHER THINGS THAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE WITH THAT DAMN MONEY. |

I think this is a good idea. I 2 have gay friends and love them all 2 death but hate 2 see them get discrimated agaisnt. They are just as much human as anyone else, they have right 2 walk the halls of other high schools, but no some kids dont the the gays. Hey if you hate the gays dont go and beat them up or kill them just dont talke 2 them or be their friends. Gay people have the right 2 keep themselfs safe just and if keeping them out of schools were they are afriad 2 go 2 school is damn well right. |

I think it is wrong that they are doing that... even though i am 17 and are very accepting to gay people... have gay friends... and are a little gay myself. It is just breaking gay people off from the rest of the world. Sure they will feel confortable..but when school is over and they have to go out into the new world then what are they to feel about different people. For a schools around the country who teach tolerance and respect..then they are being hypicritical. Why separate yourselfs. Didn't the 50's and 60's teach you anything... are people even reading History books instead of just seeing what is best for people who are different? Next thing you know they will be putting up separate bathroom stalls for gay people. It is outragious. Why separate these beautiful people from everyone else? |

I agree with TB on this, why should we pay for this! It is not right and private schools should be paid for by the government too since this has happend.
Also this is a segregated system that was made illegal years ago. |

I dilike the idea because it's going to make things harder for gays. I have this horrible feeling that the school's going to be attacked or vandalized, or that someone's going to get shot. Besides, this is going to make all the religious right groups ring with shouts of "the homosexual agenda has spread its ghastly reaches to the very coffers of New York City's treasury!" etc, etc...the wisest thing to do would be for the governmen tto help gays blend in and gain acceptance, not make them stand out. But no, it's easier to built a monument (because that's what this is, in effect) than to effect real change from inside the system. |

Brown vs. Board of Education laid down a principle that segregation is wrong. Why in the hell are we doing now?? Just b/c they ask to be segregated doesn't make it any different from forced segregation. These are just people running from life. |

These are sad times we’re living through. It seems that too many groups are looking towards self-segregation as a form of protection against life bumps and grinds. This has all the earmarks of simply running away from what has never been the perfect school life.
When I attended school (which happened to be in lower-Manhattan where I was born and raised) I went through a difficult time. I was short and tubby. I was a buck beaver and was/am visually handicapped and Puerto Rican. Wow, talk about having a hard time of it in school. But I grew up to be, what I consider to be, a well adjusted husband, father and working adult. It’s just part of life and I honestly think it helped me to better understand and accept people for who they are; black, while, homosexual, albinos, rich and poor….
About the only thing that exasperates me is people that run away from life. Life is worth living along with the good and the bad parts of growing up. What we go through in our youth should make us strong and gentle, understanding and accepting of differences. We should take it all and become a better person as a result….
So for all those young people who are running away from life, I say to you; you can’t do it. You can’t run away from our not so perfect world. so join it and make it work for you.

I think that private, yet segregated schools (i.e. Catholic and Yeshiva schools) should now demand public funding in response. Since our city is allowing gays their own segregated high schools paid for by taxpayers, why should others have to pay to send their kids to Catholic schools, etc? What's next - public schools for whites only? blacks only? People would be crying racism if that ever happened!! Does anyone notice the hypocrisy here? |

I think that it's a good idea. Having seen the amount of harasment that outed gays at my school were subject too. Very few of the gay guys from my High School were able to finish regular High School they were forced to go to alternative school or get a GED which was very sad since they were some of the most tallented people in school. |
