Louisiana Regulates Ownership of Primates, Exotic Reptiles
Louisiana Governor Mike Foster signed HB 1468, which regulates the purchase, importation and possession of nonhuman primates and non-indigenous reptiles, into law earlier this month.

Non human primates and reptiles regulations are necessary. I wanted a monkey but learned that they become problem pets when older. Also they are carriers of diseases such as rabies. I love my dog. Many people can't even responsibly keep one of those. How many n-h primates languish in horrific conditions awaiting death just because their very nature has become an inconvenience? Puppy mills seem almost "humane" in comparison. Animals are not disposables and their keeping isn't a fad. Trading in them is an industry. This industry has upset ecosystems with invasive species and fostered cruelty for financial gain. So if someone really wants a pet monkey or elephant or anaconda..., please, sell your home and immigrate to Africa or Brazil! |

There are not near enough comments on this page. I think everyone should see this and add comments. I tried to start a petition to stop the ban on non-human primates but didn't get it done in time. I'm not sure that it would have done any good anyway. I think it's kind of stupid that there is a ban on monkeys now but that the ban was lifted on wolves and wolf-dog hybrids. These animals are far more dangerous than a marmoset monkey that only gets 12 inches tall. |

I think that is Rotten! You should be able to own any animal you see fit to own and can properly house and take care of. What happened to Being A Free Country? |

I think it is wrong to stop the private ownership of primates..That I know of there has been no incident in La. of primates hurting someone and if truth be known in most cases it has been the person trying to touch or grab at them after being told not to that has tranversed their territory that has caused the problem. |

Check out the local Zoos. Do they have the best care for Primates/Reptiles? Do they provide their primates with enrichment toys, programs, and alot of individualized attention, etc. I have visited the Baton Rouge Zoo on several occasions and see a bunch of bored monkeys with nothing to do all day. |

What a shame you don't regulate the cruel and horrible conditions these animals live in, in research facilities, not to mention the torture they go through with all the testing and biopsies that are performed on them daily. There is no enrichment protocol for them, no room for them to move and after the researchers are through with them, they are euthanized and /or shipped to a sanctuary where there vets bills are very costly due to all the past research and testing that has been done on them. While you're at it, TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT SOME OF THE ZOOS. They sell their offspring and surplus to brokers/breeders for them to sell for profit to the public. EDUCATE YOURSELVES FIRST !!!!! |

This is GREAT! There are just too many impulsive buyers out there that don't have a clue. Which all this leads to is dumping the unwanted animal for a zoo or sanctuary or rescue org. to care for after these animals have reached adulthood & cannot be handled much or not at all. |

What a shame that the law does not include LA's primate research facilities. |
