Some of the great works of English literature could be scrapped from the syllabus of one of Pakistan's leading universities because of what professors fear is a rising tide of Muslim fundamentalism. A review of books studied in the English courses at Punjab University in Lahore singled...

I think the criticism done by the professors like Shehbaz Arif is justified as needless interpretation of the sex and sexual relationship common in the English literature is quite unbearable for a person having descent and pious thoughts, the vulgarity in the English literature presents nothing but the immmaturity and the abnormality of the english writers' minds, who promote sex through their vulgar writings to quench their lusty natures. This vugarity may be suiting to their society but not ours at all! |

Shahbaz Arif is a retard. How he can even presume to comment on the masterpieces of literary genius is beyond me. |

literature is an all inclusive study of MAN. It covers every aspect of human life. It is almost equvalent to behaviourial sciences. We are made of flesh and it has its own demands. If we can have Manto in Urdu, why then we cant have Pope and Donne in English? |

To Mr. Arif: let us keep our beliefs, but let us learn how others think by studying their literature whther it conforms to our beliefs or not. In this way we shall learn how to understand the other side point of view .

to mr major arif, what a silly thing from your side too!!! have you ever seen a woman praying in a public place where men could jump on them!!! this section of comments is not just for comments sake, i think you could have given some good reason other than throwing the of your mind on sacrad act of prayer.any way i think that if you hate something, give reason for that.if the literature is being targetted, which i think yes!!english literature IS predominantly vulgur to some extent...one must not be so extreme to just abuse each and every thing. try to look moderataly. |

hi, im shocked to read this article on several accounts.firstly punjab university`s english department is considered to be the most liberal discipline in the whole university where the extremists have minimal influence as compared to other departments.i,myself have done m.a in english literature from a college in pakistan, which is considered to be co nservative by many people`s standard but i assure you that issues related to sex and homosexuality were freely discussed because studying of western literature would be incomplete without it.we as students were asked not to judge the western poets by our moral standard but by the culture and morality of their respective time and country.therfore i doubt the authenticity of this articlel |

Army officers, serving or retired have stinking mentality devoid of any civilized understanding and grasp of the texts of English classics.Thier wives are even sillier and thier comments and complaints are not worthy of any consideration. And Dr Arif who is a Phd from Essex is an insult to liberal education. If thses classics are acuused of containing vulgar and sexual material , what does the style of offering Namaz(muslim paryers) portray? When women bend in namaz, don't the men feel like jumping on them? And in reality he bloddy Muslims, wicked generals and lustful Mullahs do jump on young innocent women and girls pretending marriage or otheriwse..... |
