M S Sheikh I agree with what ricky has said. The people of Pakistan seldom benefit from any so-called aid. We have been hearing since independence about various packages of aid to Pakistan. These packages are supposedly meant to help Pakistan but the Pakistanis have seen no tangible results so far.

There is another interesting fact about the US Pakistan relations. The US cannot stop expressing its love for democracy but not even once has any president of the US visited Pakistan when an elected government was in place. Instead the US presidential visits to Pakistan have always been when dictators were in power in Pakistan. This is true from Ayub Khan to Musharaaf and Nixon to Clinton. So much for the slogans of support and encouragement of worldwide democracy the US.

If the US really wants to help Pakistan it should lift the trade barriers that it has put up against Pakistan. Give Pakistan products its markets. The US can also help by targeting the people of Pakistan, not in person though, as recipients of aid rather than the leaders.

People of Pakistan are not fools; they know what is going on. If the US really wants to make friends with Pakistan it should stop giving personal help to Pakistani leaders, which has ruined Pakistan, and start making up for the damage it is responsible for.

ricky Of course, that's the usual US foreign policy; sell weapons to military regimes with absolutely no legitimation from the people. As long as they kill (using the US weapons) and torture (using the US training) the "right" people it really doesn't care. The US, the leading democracy ... just makes me sick! 6/25/2003
