Dixie Chicks vs. Toby Keith

Dixie Chicks frontwoman Natalie Maines’ loose tongue seems to have gotten her and her bandmates into trouble yet again.

nm4ever&ever! Forget about that gross Toby Kieth, let's see some shirless pictures of Natalie Manes! She is so hot! 7/13/2003
tk4ever Please before everybody leaves someody tell me where I can get some shirtless pics of Toby!!! 7/13/2003
Michael I think im throwing my fair well tour too. People you have to let go. If O.J simpson can still run the streets killing people and get away with it, I don't see why anyone would care what Natalie had to say, it was her mouth, God gave it to her. As for me, I still think the president of the united states is a liar, and a crook. He had to send his brother to Tallahassee to help him cheat the votes to win, so.... As for the rest of the Toby Keith fans, get over it.... Fan, you need to give everyone a chance, and stop attacking people if they take up for the chicks. I am closing now, goodbye.

Michael
7/13/2003
ann coulter i am so unhappy

:-(
7/13/2003
fan Thank you Chick Fan, I agree with your comments.
Thanks Tami, I understand.
7/13/2003
Chick Fan Hey Fan, I'll speak on behalf of the role model comments.

I disagree with her statment fully. When you are in the public eye your actions are seen as that of a role model wheather or not you want them to or not.

Depends on what type of role model you want to me, if you think her actions were wrong in terms of her political views. Some might argue that she is demonstrating one of the U.S.'s greatest rights that of free speach and truth. Or you might argue that she is unpatriotic and that she is a poor example of a U.S. citizen.

For me it is a little of both, I respect her for being honest enough not to lie even if it might hurt her career, and a little sad that she was petty when it came to a fellow artist clear personal views.

Isn't this about the music? or is it about politics?
7/13/2003
Patriot Goddess Here is I hope my farewell tour...

Susan, I did read the whole post and you did say; all of these things, but your meaning was very clear.

I agree to disagree with you, you are passionate and strong in your views. For this I respect you fully, your manner I respect a little less but clearly understand your need to defend you home, family, beliefs and country. Hold firm never loose your passion, and faith they will move you through all of lifes trials. I just don't feel it important to debate with you as we are clearly of different minds and both adults who can be more productive with our time.

Not sure that the question that was asked in this poll was ever really answered my me. I like both of their music, seems hard to seperate political views with the music. I don't like the manner in which DC chose to voice all of their opinions or even their statements, but TK sank to their level in his actions as well and in that lost a lot of my respect as well. In time we will all look back at their actions and say why did we invest so much time in a childest forum.

7/13/2003
Tami G. Fan what I mean in simple terms is it is okay for you to dictate what you think is our constitutional rights but when someone disputes you, you mock them. Get a grip.

I agree that the words and actions of the Natalie were in the very least in poor taste but that is her opinion and at least she has the guts to stand up for what she believes instead of hiding out on the worlds almost silliest board posting about it.

You have valid strong points that would be better heard with a little less of what I just did and if you didn't catch my meaning that is belittling others to make you seem smarter.
7/13/2003
fan Well yes Elisha we all have our own opinions of who are role models and I believe all the people you mentioned are role models. Also if you read it correctly, I said "TRY" and you can't tell me that what she said about drinking and having sex is not bad. YES, she sure can, I have no problem with that, but please don't say it when many young fans can hear it. I guess you find corrupting people alright. I already know your comeback to that one, Toby Keith corrupts through his violence...no he is standing up for our nation and saying fight for our nation, not go out have sex, drink, get raped, get pregnant,etc... Come on rationalize with me Elisha.

Oh and you are a teacher right? Just please answer me that.
7/13/2003
allison Alright im just going to say what i said befor on a dif. website. I like the dixi chicks' music but i dont agree with what they are saying. My mother is a soldier fighting in Iraq right now. Natalie should think about this: If we weren't fighting this war right now than our govronment would be a dictatorship just like Iraq and she would have been shot by now because she likes to voice her opinion. Heres 2 simple steps Natalie should follow 1. OPEN MOUTH 2. INSERT FOOT. enough said.
Oh yeah, GO T.K.!!
7/13/2003
Elisha Maybe no one has said anything about her comment because (1) they don't spend every waking moment monitoring this message board the way you do or (2) they realize that country/pop/rock stars, actors, and athletes aren't meant to be role models. The role models are the soldiers who risk their lives protecting our freedoms. The role models are the policemen who fight crime. The role models are the firemen who rush into burning buildings to save lives while putting their own in peril. The role models are the good teachers who work many more than 40 hours a week and spend their own money for supplies so that the one student who wants to learn will get an education and make something out of life because someone inspired them. The role models are parents who teach their kids what's right and what's wrong instead of relying on others to do so. 7/13/2003
fan Wow no chick supporters had anything to say about Natalie's role model comment. surprising... 7/13/2003
THE TRUTH Susan, I apologize if I made you angry. The reason I made the comment about the origins of "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" was because of your statement on 7/6/2003:

"Truth, Actually, it is about a guy getting out of a prison, which if you check into the writer you will find, is not about a prison such as jail, it is about a guy getting out of a p.o.w. camp."

I remember when that song became a "patriotic song" in the minds of many people, including myself. It was during the Iran hostage crisis when people started tying yellow ribbons around tree branches as a sign of remembrance when the ordeal kept dragging on and on. I just thought that it was ironic that a song written about someone passing bad checks had taken on another meaning, but music can have that power. I wanted to set the record straight, because you seemed to get the impression that I had not read your entire post, when in fact I had.

Unlike fan, who tends to make personal comments about people with whom he disagrees, you keep the discussion on topic, and I agree with that. Even though I may disagree with some of your comments, I respect your opinions and I believe that we both strongly support each others' rights to have them. That's the reason I wanted to clarify what I said, and say I'm sorry what I was trying to say was misconstrued.
7/13/2003
tk4ever Does anybody know where I can find shirtless pics of Toby? 7/13/2003
Michael well angela, i take it you know how to read, you can flip through the script and find out 7/13/2003
ann coulter oh good. iron chef is on. maybe the broccoli will make me sleepy. 7/13/2003
ann coulter i can't sleep. i wish i had something to help me sleep. 7/13/2003
angela Wow! I have missed out on a lot? Does someone want to sum it all up for me.. preferably not Micheal. Susan, you rock, as does fan. I didn't take the time to read all the messages from my last entry, so someone please sum it up for me. Thanks. Toby Keith all the way! 7/13/2003
travelin sol...
Two days past eighteen
He was waitin' for the bus in his army greens
Sat down in a booth at a café there
Gave his order to the girl with a bow in her hair
He's a little shy so she gave him a smile
So he said would you mind sittin' down for a while
And talkin' to me I'm feelin' a little low
She said I'm off in an hour and I know where we can go

So they went down and they sat on the pier
He said I bet you got a boyfriend but I don't care
I've got no one to send a letter to
Would you mind if I sent one back here to you?

CHORUS:
I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
Too young for him they told her
Waitin' for the love of the travelin' soldier
Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
Never more to be alone
When the letter says a soldier's coming home

So the letters came
From an army camp
In California then Vietnam
And he told his heart
It might be love
And all of the things he was so scared of
Said when it's gettin kinda tough over here
I think about that day sittin' down at the pier
And close my eyes and see your pretty smile
Now don't worry but I won't be able to write for a while

CHORUS

(Martie's fiddle break - Emily's dobro break)

One Friday night at a football game
The Lord's Prayer said and the anthem sang
A man said folks would you bow your heads
For the list of local Vietnam dead
Cryin' all alone under the stands
Was the piccolo player in the marching band
And one name read and no one really cared
But a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair

CHORUS
7/12/2003
ann coulter i was doing a lot better but now i feel a lot worse. it's just hopeless. 7/12/2003
Susan Fan, you are fighting a good fight. Keep up the good work. Someone around here has to keep telling these people what an airhead Natalie Maines is at times. She says the most inappropriate things. Keep up the good work. 7/12/2003
Susan Patriot Goddess, you seem to have the same problem "Truth" does. you just don't bother to read the whole thing. What I said was..."You say you are a "Patriot Goddess" well you sure as hell don't sound like one to me. If you are patriotic you will stop and think for one moment of how you would feel if you had family and friends that died because of tome psycho. I hope and pray that you didn't, but if you did, do you think they died for nothing? I have a brother who has gone overseas to fight, not just because he was ordered to, but because he wanted to make sure you and I had the right to think for ourselves." I am sorry you lost someone at the hands of a terrorist but I have a big problem with it being said that we are no better than terrorists ourselves. We aren't the ones who made the first move with the Twin Towers attack, we just made sure everyone knew that it was a mistake to do that because they weren't going to get away with it. As for you being military, then I really have problems with some of the stuff you've been saying. How can you say "the troops are only following orders"? You have to know better than that if you are military. At least I would hope you would know that the troops are in the military to defend us in the threat of danger. Yes, I know there is "new intel" that states WMD's might not have been there, but that doesn't excuse the shooting down of our planes in when they are enforcing the no fly zones. It only makes it worse when you think about it... why wouldn't they agree to meet or allow inspectors in to prove there non existance? Why did they take hostages? Why wouldn't they act before the end of the deadlines? Given all the circumstances at the time of the invasion, President Bush was acting in good faith based upon the intel he was given. No one wanted to see war happen right off the bat,we tried. That's why there were several failed attempts at comunication and we were left with no choice. As for the comments made about you thinking about how you would feel, you are in a point and time that you should recognize what is at stake if we just ignored the intel of the time. I agree that everyone has the right to their own opinions. I don'tknow how many more times I can say that, but my whole interest in this debate is because of all the comments about how President Bush was wrong to go into Iraq and send our troops out to try to protect our great nation from the threat of invasion or attack. As for my being high and mighty, boy do you have an ego problem. I have every right to be proud of my husband and family members for being military. Just as you are proud of yours. My bringing my family into this is just to show that there is a lot at stake and I do not appreciate people saying they are ashamed of the President or our troops. The President and our troops go hand in hand. You have to respect them both. People need to stop and think of how all of this has come to be and realize how much is at stake. I, for one, am extremely proud of the job our troops have been doing and I hope and pray that this all ends soon and that as many people as possible come home safely. As for respect and freedom of speech and freedom of opinion, those are all things that have been given to us, but at a very high cost. Those things have cost many people their lives, limbs, eyesight and/or blood. Those people deserve our respect and our prayers and for us to do our best to always remember those who have died so that we may be free.... This "chat" board has had several people on it saying some pretty dumb things and then there are those that take it seriously, freedom comes at a high cost, many have paid that debt and now it is time we support the president in his efforts to protect us from harm. It is NOT the time to go running around saying you are ashamed of him, especially since very few signed up for this task. All I am saying is, be respectful of others, and be respectful of the dead. After all, I wouldn't want to be the one sitting down and all of the sudden, chemical warfare has begun. 7/12/2003
fan Alright, just a little tid bit of info I found on Natalie's view of her being a role model:

"I don't feel any obligation to be a role model. I don't think any of us do anything that would not be worthy of a role model, but that's not my responsibility, . . . I'm legal to drink, I'm legal to have sex, and I'm comfortable making decisions about my own life."

That is just plain horrible...who says that? Ok lets try to corrupt more young girls already...Great example she is setting...Now THAT is arrogance.

I know all you Chix supporters will say that she is right and she has no obligation to be a role model, well maybe to some extent, but seriuosly.....it just makes you sound like such a jerk for saying something like that. I personally think being a celebrity and being in the spotlight like that, you should TRY to be a role model. You have all these young fans looking up to you saying "I want to be like her someday". Well if they see stuff like that it almost crushes everything. It almost seems to prove she's doing this all for herself and her bandmates. It's too bad when you have an up an coming popular female group breaking new limits and barriers who don't think they need to be role models.

What are your thoughts on this quote of hers?
7/12/2003
Susan WOW, ok let's get a few things straight here....first off....

"Truth" maybe you should learn to read a little more, because, I said that yes the song was written about a guy getting out of prison and I also said that if it makes people think about their loved ones then it is patriotic to me. Boy, you sure have got some problems with your reading skills. YOU seem to do a lot of speed reading and skipping a lot of words. And, as for being ashamed of the president, I said that she has the right to her opinion and so does everyone else. However, I think she has handled the whole thing in a less than tactful way. You really need to read everything before you comment on it. My whole point on this "patriotic" song thing is that if a song makes you stop and think and remember your loved ones then it is patriotic because a "patriotic" song is intended to make people think about the sacrifices people have made for freedom and rights. If anyone here is acting all high and mighty it is you because you think you are the only one with an opinion that counts. The difference between Toby Keith's and Natalie Maines' patriotism is very simple. Toby Keith sings to honor our troops and to honor his father's memory. Natalie sings just to hear herself sing. All she cares about is being up front and in the spotlight and if she has to say something stupid to do it, she will. Yes, everyone has the right to have their own opinion but to go to another country and shoot your mouth off about the representative of our country is just plain wrong. To sit there and say that you are ashamed of the President, who is a representative of the people of the United States, is the same thing as saying you are ashamed of your country and the people fighting for your rights. She may think she is right to do that, but she isn't. As for you and your so called truth, well, truth is open for interpretation and a patriot has a simple definition. That definition is someone who loves, supports and defends his or her country and it's interests. And, loyalty to ones nation. Truth's definition is the true or actual state of a matter. Of course, we all know what is said about truth. There is your side and my side, but the truth lies somewhere in the middle. So, you are entitled to your opinion but don't go around as if you are the only one who is right. A lot of people on this board feel that she has handled all of this in such a poor manner and she hasn't exactly been supportive of our president. Yes, there is new intel that says those weapons may not have existed after all but I personally wouldn't want to be the one to have to decide that action. President Bush acted on the intel he had at the time, which led him and a whole lot of other people to think that we might not be safe unless we act as soon as possible. I mean, think about it. On one hand you have intel saying WMD's are present, on the other hand, you have people saying let's check into it. Then, deadlines were given to Hussein to allow U.N. inspectors in to check it out, and in return we the inspectors were turned into hostages. Then, we send up planes to gather intel as to whether or not they are moving them. Those planes get shot at. Ok, now it's time to pull out all the stops. Either you let us in, or we will be forced to take action. We had to take action. I would rather take action than sit around and wait to see if those WMD's were headed for us. President Bush had to do what he and several others thought best. He couldn't risk just sitting around waiting to see if we got nuked or not. There were plenty of opportunities to stop this war before it got started, it's not George W's fault Hussein wouldn't play nice. If the Dixie Chicks want to sit back and bad mouth a guy because he was protecting our nation, then they are the ones taking advantage of the situation.
For the DC to walk around saying they are ashamed he is from Texas just because he stepped up and said "you aren't gonna mess with us and get away with it" is totally stupid.
7/12/2003
Michael no prob tarzan's lady 7/11/2003
Tarzan's lady Dixie Chicken,well said. 7/11/2003
Tarzan's lady michael, thanx. 7/11/2003
fan What is my supposed "preaching to the choir"? Tami, don't speak unless spoken to. Thanks. 7/11/2003
Tami G. Okay Fan...So when you preach to the choir it is okay but when someone else does you try and bring the discussion back to the proper topic.

And no one wants to see what you would show and tell...
7/11/2003
fan Luxembourg---darn I was worried about that one....Oh and teacher, is it show and tell time yet?

Get off your high horse and realize the topic of this discussion has nothing to do with losing your freedom of speech in another country. It is simply about the actions of these two artists. Good day.
7/11/2003
Elisha Bark87, just because someone in another country might think that you are ignorant or stupid for voicing an opinion, that certainly does not mean that you LOSE your freedom of speech. No matter how ignorant or stupid I might think what someone else says is, they still have the FREEDOM to say it. As for your contribution to the matter, fan, you are going into a completely different topic. Certainly, if I went to Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, or North Korea and said something against the government, I would probably be imprisoned. However, I am confident that I could go to Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, and quite a few other countries and voice the same opinions and not suffer any negative repercussions (not rePROcussions). Our Constitution does not limit my freedom of expression to the boundaries of the US, as Bark87 implied. Don't blur the argument by bringing in something that's unrelated to the discussion. Bark87 said that freedom of speech, namely that of Natalie Maines, ends when we leave the country. The fact is that she was free to voice her opinion, no matter how much any of us disagree with it. 7/11/2003
fan The Constitution of the United States of America, Elisha. Not the Constitution of the World. YES we do lose our freedom of speech in other countries. Sure we may say anything, but laws are different around the world Elisha. Different reprocussions may arise from doing so. For example you are in Iraq and you say "I hate Saddam". Your lible to get shot! So this just goes to show you cant always say what you want and expect everything to be ok. I agree with Bark. 7/11/2003
Bark87 Elisha the reason why i said what i said is because its true. Now Now if you go to another country and say what ever you want to say and offend people and say its your right. They will think your ignorant!! And stupid. So I stand with with my old saying. Your freedom of speech ends when you leave the country. I would like to hear from you. Please. 7/11/2003
Elisha I didn't care for Natalie Maines comments but I care even less for Bark87's statement that, and I quote, "Oh yes, when you are in another country your freedom of speach (sic) ends there." That disturbs me far more than what Natalie Maines said. The idea that we as Americans lose our right to free speech or to state our disagreement with the policies of our leaders when we travel abroad is ignorant and not at all consistent with what's set forth in The Constitution. 7/11/2003
jessica toby keith rocks man!! he sings the awesomest music 7/11/2003
fun fan YeeHaww, DC vs.TK maybe they should do a charity fundraiser and battle it out on live tv. 7/11/2003
Tami G. Okay I had to laugh when I red all the posts for this seamingly simple little poll.

Big deal she doesn't like whats going on no one really likes it but it is what the Pres. needed to do. Are we going to stone everyone who doesn't agree with us?

Also an artists personal beliefs isn't why I listen to music, it's for the Music. I like them both and would in a heartbeat listen to either ones songs.

7/11/2003
Dixie Chicken If the question is whose music I like more? Dixie Chicks.

If the question is who do I favor in their debate? Neither, they are both behaving like children.

If the question is am I proud to be an American? Yes

If the question is do I always agree with the President and/or the administration? No, but if anyone said yes to this question they would be lying. You can please some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time.

If the question is do I support our troops and respect the President? Yes, our troops fight for us. Our President has a full plate and many hard decisions to make.
7/11/2003
Patriot Goddess Anonymous One, I don't even know you why wouldn't I like you.
Okay as far your debate about intelligence spelling isn't the end all be all. As a matter of fact I know I don't spell well but as an ADULT as you called yourself I don't pick at petty childish things to determine if someone is a PUD. Grow up.

Susan please do not question my patriotism. I believe in my country, I choose this country and I'm proud to be an American. Our soldiers I have the utmost respect for because they are willing to risk their lives for our freedom and our homeland.

By the way I did stop and think about how it would feel if my family died at the hand of terrorist because MINE DID! So next time you think you are so high and mighty because you married a man in the military, realize you are no better than me Why you might ask? Because not only am I but my husband, brother and 3 brother in laws are in the military. I understand what a great nation we have and the fact that our military fights for it everyday.

GI might in our PC world stand for Government individual but it's origination in WWII stood for Government issue or General issue. I never stated that I didn't support our troops or President. The DC were out of line in their behavior, it was childish and unprofessional but so was TK these are what makes us as a nation look bad.

United we stand Divided we Fall... Never forget the ones who walked before us as they died for our freedoms.
7/10/2003
Michael Oh, tarzan lady, why dont you swing back to that tree that you swung from 7/10/2003
Michael Every body can think its all right for them to steal a horse but the dixie chicks cant call the president sorry. Whats wrong with this picture? 7/10/2003
fan i saw mcgraw and kenny in concert, it was a great show...they need to steal more horses! 7/10/2003
Michael this crap is all stupid, "oh my god the chicks need to be banned!" everybody get a life. toby keith is not god!!! Even though he tries to be 7/10/2003
BUCKBLASTER Yeah, true the chicks have freedom of speech. But the liberal garbage that Maines spewed at an OVERSEAS CONCERT to an English crowd that was largely against the war, was nothing more than a piss-poor attempt at getting some applause.

Michael - yeah, that was cool when Tim and Kenny stole the horses. I bet if they had another horse in the mix, the cops would have thought they were riding the Dixie Chicks through town!
7/10/2003

JANA DEE WEBB TOBY KEITH IS AWESOME 7/9/2003
fan yea well we probably would have lost over 5000 people from a terrorist attack from that damn country. If we can crumble that regime then maybe this stuff wont happen. It's not all about finding WMD, as you can see Al Qeuda used OUR planes, but had financial and leadership help from a powerful leader(bin laden). If we can try to take these people out of power, maybe this will stop. We liberated a country whose leader killed his own and attacked others for years.

Oh great, look what I probably started... a debate on whether the war was valid....!!!! AH!!!!

The Truth I just read the Susan/Michael chat. I would not have said what Natalie Maines said, but it was her right as an American to voice her disagreement with the President. That's her right, anytime, anywhere. It's also the right of the consumer not to buy her music. However, as we are learning more about the situation in Iraq (no weapons of mass destruction, faulty information being provided about the weapons by certain administration officials, etc.), it seems like more of us should have been questioning the motives for this war, especially when you consider that we have lost over 200 brave soldiers and will continue to lose more in the name of nation-building. 7/9/2003
The Truth Susan, responding to a point you made a few days ago about "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" being about a guy getting out of a POW camp. That's not what the song is about. It is in fact about a guy getting out of prison. Here's the account from www.superseventies.com, also available from other places on the www:

"The song was based on an actual incident that occurred aboard a southern bus bound for Miami. One of the passengers explained to the driver that he was just out of prison, having served three years for passing bad checks. In a letter to his wife, he had written that she didn't have to wait for him; but, if she was still interested, she could let him know by tying a yellow ribbon around the only oak tree in the city square. As the bus rolled down U.S. 17, nearing the man's hometown of White Oak, Georgia, the driver was asked to slow down so that all could see whether the ribbon was in place. To the man's tearful relief, it was. The driver pulled over and phoned the story in to the wire services, which spread it all over the country. Songwriters Irwin Levine and L. Russell Brown read it in the newspaper, then put together their million-selling ballad."

Susan Wow, this board is slow now? I wonder why?

Bebo, I completely agree with you and I will not go into another long "comment" on it. Just to say I agree.

So people, there has to be something going on? Unless the point has been made, which is a possibility. :)

I still need a good debate every once in a while....

Michael Come on folks we need some more comments!!! 7/9/2003
Bebo My problem with the Dixie Chicks is they can sing about getting back at an abusive husband by killing him and dumping the body in a ravine but if someone comes onto American soil and kills thousands of our people we arent suppose to do anything, we aren't even suppose to be angry. What I mean by this is when Natalie Maines said Toby Keith's song (Boot in their Azz) was Tacky. My opinion is that she attacked him first by saying that. Not only did she attack him but she attacked our nation when the wounds were still fresh. Most of us were still very angry about the attack on the towers when she is putting one of our own down for singing a song he wrote in memory of his dad and about fighting back when attacked. I will forever change the radio or TV when they come on. My opinion is that she is about equal to my feelings of Jane Fonda. 7/8/2003
