I agree 100% with fan. Curt.. I can't believe you actually think Toby wrote that song just to make more money and make him look better! I can't believe you could go that low. But now I can. Toby wrote that song in memory of his father. He wrote that song to express his feelings on the war as well as many others feelings. He even called up Cledus T. because they are friends and said Hey, I wrote a song, what do you think? He wasn't even planning on releasing it as a single. Cledus said that he should. When he went over seas, all the soldiers told him that he should release it out. So, why don't you quit running down a patriotic American who is giving hop and motivation to our troops. Sometimes you have to fight for freedom, even if we are fighting for someone else's freedom. We are actually helping out others. Tell me Curt, when did helping others be abad thing? And that sarcasm, it really is quit annoying. |

| fan |
Curt, the CMA bestly represents the best in country music just as an election represents an official for a job. It is the audiences vote. Your sarcasm is over the edge and not funny. We will just call you Sarcurstic from now on. Toby didn't take advanatge of the situation, he just felt it was a good time to write a song when people were down and out and needed motivation of some sort. Do you believe Darryl Worley's song to be taking advantage as well? These people just want to relate a song to world experiences. It helps people gain a better sense of the situation and maybe take away some of the pain. Also there is no way of taking advantage of any situation through a song because nobody knows if the song will be a hit if it comes out.Well if the only way these barbarians can understand fredom is through us fighting, then we must. These people will not sit down and have tea with us and discuss peace. Also, we are not having a history lesson here scurt, we are simply talking anout the present war and artists beliefs towards that war.
Almost all of your sentences in your post were sarcastic, why don't you state your point. All this garbage is annoying.
Once again, a song cannot have a possession. An inatimate object cannot possess a mentality. Your miserable attempt at a opinionated metaphor makes you look more ignorant.
oh and no, i don't have much hair on my chest. I am not the hairy type! I wonder if toby looks like a bear? Probably the reason nobody can find a pic w/his shirt off. later |
7/1/2003 |
| Curt |
Also Fan, I said the song expresses the mentality of a professional wrestler, not that the song has mental issues. Do you know what the word mentality means?
Toby and fan all the way! |

how is DC's song Earl any different that TK's song? Talk about ignorant! Go Toby!! |

| fan |
ok scurt, stop your nonsense about the CMA entertainer of the year. Your post shows a complete lack of knowledge. How does his song show an understanding? In his video he is with the troops. I think he knows what's going on. How can an inatimate object have mental problems? I think you are the mental one here. Go to sleep scurt. If your ashamed get the hell out. Oh once again, freedom of speech, people can say what they like. Hypocrite.
Julie are you ok? |

I do like country. I listen to it most of the time. But I don't listen to the stuff they play on the radio. It's watered down crap. Give me a Gillian Welch or a Steve Earle anyday over Toby Keith, becasue they are closer to true country music then any of those other radio clowns. |
6/30/2003 |
| Tarzan's lady |
people who dont like country should stay out of it. go toby . toby all the way. |
6/30/2003 |
| Curt |
Wow, I just read some of the earlier postings. How shameful are people's prejudices against minority groups in this coutry. The amount of ignorance is appalling. I'm ashamed to be from the same country as some of you. |
6/30/2003 |
| Curt |
The Dixie Chicks have won me over too. I was never fan either until the controversy started. Finally, someone in mainstream country who can think independently and doesn't just follow the narrow minded views of the country music industry! There is no other music industry in the world like country music in that regard. It's like a snotty country club who only allows members who think like they do. Cookie Cutter artists like Toby Keith are so boring. His song shows a complete lack of understanding of the complexity of issues involved in the world, which is far more dangerous then anything natalie maines said. The song has the mentality of a professinal wrestler. Wake up people. |
6/30/2003 |
| andy |
good for you todd, do you and randy listen to it together? |
6/30/2003 |
| Todd |
They've won me over. I was never a fan of their music or any country music until all this hubbub. I bought Home and I keep it in my car CD player. |
6/30/2003 |
| Karie |
I used to be a die-hard Chicks fan, but obviously they are not mature enough to really apologize and let things go. I cannot support this. Such a shame as they are wonderful musicians. I appreciate them standing for what they believe, but pushing the envelope isn't necessary. It's not winning anyone over. |

| mike |
Country music fans are the dumbest people on earth. You are all a bunch of redneck hicks. All other forms of music are so much more advanced. It's sad to see the path that Hank Williams Sr., Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings blazed have to be litter by someone as lame as Toby Keith. Give me a break. He's horrible. The country music industry is so narrow minded. The best country music is not heard on the radio. It's perform is small clubs around the country be real country artist like Buddy Miller, Billy Joe Sahver, and Steve Earle. Toby Keith? Man, talk about a buch of loser with really bad taste. "Yeah, let's kick ass..kiss my American ass!" Wow, are you people dumb. |

Toby Keith, I'd say, is one of the best county singers in the world!! I'd perfer listening to him than any other country singer. TOBY ROCKS!!! |

Radio stations did have a right to tune them out, Angela. You are correct. However, when a broadcasting megacompany like ClearChannel bans them from their stations, that's not a choice. That's censorship. Leave the choice to the individual. |
6/27/2003 |
| angela |
They had the right to speak out, the radio stations had a right to tune them out. Tough life. Toby Keith all the way! |
6/27/2003 |
| THE BOSS |
A quote from Bruce Springsteen: "The Dixie Chicks have taken a big hit lately for exercising their basic right to express themselves. To me, they're terrific American artists expressing American values by using their American right to free speech. For them to be banished wholesale from radio stations, and even entire radio networks, for speaking out is un-American."

I thought I liked the dixie chicks, But it's like they say 1 bad apple ruins the whole bunch. Those of us who have someone at war understand how it really is. SHE DON'T HAVE A CLUE! |

Thank you VietNam Vet! |
6/26/2003 |
| angela |
Linda, I know that it is ok to voice your opinion, but she shouldn't have done it at that time. She is an adult, and she should know when to say things at the right time. And then to bash someone for being patriotic. It just doesn't seem right. But, hey she has a right to voice her opinion. But, alot of us don't like it. |

As a VietNam Veteran Natalie Maynes is starting to remind me of Jane Fonda. The difference is she has pointed the big gun (her mouth) the wrong direction. Let's hope it does not take all three down as that would be unfortunate. Toby Keith on the other hand has supported The Troups (men and women) in a very positive way. He sticks to his guns. "Whiskey for my men and beer for my horses." |
6/26/2003 |
| Linda |
Angela, what it tells people in other countries is that Americans are free to say what they think and believe what they think. It also says that we are free to disagree with our leaders and to be vocal about it. The idea that we shouldn't use that freedom at certain times is scary. |
6/26/2003 |
| angela |
Cleve, the only problem I see with Natalie doing that is when it was on foriegn land. It was kind of a slap in our face when she done that. It made us look stupid. For us to send singers over there that are Americans and they turn around and trashed our President. What is that telling other people? These girls are people who others looked up too, and for them to do that. It just wasn't right. But yes, she does have a title to her opinion, but she shouldn't have used that right at that time. Toby Keith all the way! |
6/26/2003 |
| Cleve |
I agree with most of what you say Donald. You are right that Toby and Natalie have rights to their opinions. I lost some very close friends on September 11 and I am still angry about it. I think the only punishment for Bin Laden that is suitable is to tie him up and allow everyone who lost someone on that day to spit on him, kick him, or do whatever they feel is appropriate. I see both sides of this issue. I don't think there was anything wrong with Toby recording "The Angry American" because as an artist he expressed himself. I also don't think there was anything wrong with Natalie saying what she thought. She never spoke out against our country and it's important that we remember that. If we start persecuting (or praising) people for their political or religious belief, that makes us no better than those lunatics in Iran or Saudi Arabia or in the Taliban who made it illegal for anyone to have their own beliefs. Freedom of expression is one of the basic rights we have as Americans. |
6/26/2003 |
| donald keathley |
natalie needs to realize that toby has a right to an opinion just like she does. i think she is going to make life hard on the two other chicks if she keeps running her mouth.i think toby speaks for most americans. we dont all say it in the same way but basically all of us are mad about what has transpired in the past couple of years.to critisize your country on foreign soil is definitly not an act of patriotism and shows no sign of unity with your country. we had troops on the ground at the time and this was an obvious lack of respect for them. martie and emily need to do what they did before, fire your lead singer and go ahead with yor careers before natalie drags you down with her.if i remember correctly you did this once before so it shouldnt be too hard to do again. |
6/26/2003 |
| Janette Moore |
Enjoyed Dixie Chicks music but lets face it their lead singer should stick to singing because she is no brain child. Her mouth has turned my family off to her music and channels turned when she is on. Toby on the other hand is #1. Fantastic singer/songwriter, outstanding role model and proud to be an American. |
6/26/2003 |
| Jack |
I think the Dixie Chicks should stick to singing and shut there mouths on running down the USA |

Toby Keith is AWESOME!! He stands up for himself even when the Dixie Chicks act like idiots toward him. Go Toby Keith! |

I think Natalie is a victim of wanting to sound like a liberal with out really knowing what she believes in. I beliebe T.K. is at least has a genuine passion for his belief. Natalie seems like she wants to be the trendy ideaology spokeswoman. Me.. I just want to know... WHY? |
6/25/2003 |

I agree with you Trazans lady. And for Stef, that is a good quote. Toby Keith is a good patriot that sings the truth! Toby Keith all the way! |

I'm a huge fan of Toby Keith, & if someone has a problem with that then they can kiss my american ass. I think everyone out there has forgotten what our boys are fighting for, they are fighting for our freedom, & freedom of speech is one of those freedoms, I'm not standing up for her but however she was just expressing that freedom. By the way I love that song Toby Keith called Courtesy of the red, white, & blue. |
6/25/2003 |

Thanks for sharing TR's quote with us, Steff. How true. |
6/25/2003 |

Theodore Roosevelt said it best: "To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." |

6/25/2003 |

I think Natalie was out of line, when she insulted Toby's verse "boot in your ass" Toby's song is about defending the United States. The Good bye Earl song done tastlessly about murdering an abusive spouse was never condemed because this is the US of A. If you don't like what you are hearing, tune it out. Courtosy of the Red white and blue was and is the way most American's feel. The entertainment industry is not the majority. They are a small minority of voices heard louder than the majority. That is ashame. I approve of the war in Iraq, I do not approve of us staying there. Iraqies to not want us there. Or maybe it is just the vocal minority rather than the thinking majority. God Bless all. I pray for Peace, But if we cannot acheive peace from prayer, we must fight for it. |

I think Grace has a very good point. Toby Keith, the Dixie Chicks, and all other entertainers have one objective and it's money. Also, I've been following this board since the editorial was posted, and I think it's interesting that "fan" is telling someone to "put it nice." |

These two country singers need to set an example to the World and get over themselves. They are role models think of the people watching them and what the examples they are setting. Get over it already. I liked both and their music. With all this between them I think less of them now as everyone else I know. Our World is going down hill and them being the eyes of people should be showing an good example

You people are so gullible that you don't even realize that this is a public relations thing going on between Toby Keith and Natalie Maines. The publicity that they are getting is something that no amount of money could buy. Toby Keith has galvanized his country fan base which is what he wanted to do, and the Dixie Chicks have found more of a crossover audience which is what they wanted to do. Do you think either Toby or the Chicks want to see this blow over? Hell no! |

Why is it when people get a little famous they get the "big head"? The Dixie-chickens are so lucky to be where they are. I didnt even listen to them on the street corner in Ft.Worth. I am a proud American and a Proud Okie!I live in Norman Ok. about 4 miles from Toby. He has stayed in Okla., has a beautiful home and family here. He is a king here and can come and go as he pleases. I saw him at Outback Steakhouse a couple of weeks ago, and he is always himself. he does not put on the dog for anyone. He has more class and talent than all the chicks put together. one more thing if you make 26k and up your in the top 50% according to the IRS stats I gave and if you make 55k and up your in the top 25% so to tell me the rich are the ones benefiting from the tax cut is just plane stupid!!! The top 1% makes 293k and up and also pay roughly 35% of all income taxes. So fan of fan rich is now defined as the top 25% and if you make more than 50k a year your the one that is footing the bill for the rest of the country. You cant possible tell me that this tax cut is only going to effect 2% of our population because according to my numbers 25% or more will feel the effects. Give up this tax argument because you have no clue what the truth is and you will continue to be blind until you wake up and smell the roses because it is the working class who is truly supporting this country and we deserve a break! |
6/23/2003 |
| Brion |
I wanted to comment on "fan of fan" Financial wizardy a week ago saying that the rich are recieving the tax cuts. Fan of fan your nothing more than a typical liberal who use numbers the wrong way to scare people into believing your garbage. I have some real statistics here for you to disprove your little 2% theory saying they are the only ones recieving the benefits. this info comes from the IRS and the numbers are from 2000. Top 5% - 56.47% of all income taxes; Top 10% - 67.33% of all income taxes; Top 25% - 84.01% of all income taxes. Top 50% - 96.09% of all income taxes. The bottom 50%? They pay a 3.91% of all income taxes. So your telling me that a tax cut only benefits the top 2% of americans? That is horse just like that usless dribble you spilled claiming Slick Willie was responsible for our ggod economy when in fact it was more of Regans doing and Clinton just left it alone. By the way his (Clinton) great economy was nothing more than deciet and lies holding form to true Clinton style for proof look at companies such as Enron and other establishments that cooked their books while Billy boy was getting head from interns. Clinton was the worse thing for this country and all of you who support him can go live in Iraq and be the peaceful people that you are but dont ever come back because us true country hard working americans dont want to support your lazy asses anymore! |

I hear y'all! I hope that when President Bush gets re-elected in 2004 he will do something about the problem with the immigrants and other minorities. We built this country and all they haven't taken away from us is country music and NASCAR. President Bush has some good minorities in his cabinet like Rice and Powell and they understand that the rest of them want a free ride. I am tired of carrying them on my back. |
6/23/2003 |
| toney |
yes foster, good point! These minorities just waste space. Criminals is all they are. Affirmative action crap. Hire a minority over a more experienced white person. Sure I'll agree with equality, but come on, there must be some limits. The more experienced perosn should get hired whatever race the person is. Sure if they are a minority, ok. Oh and these colleges admitting minorites over more qualified people..complete crap! |

Country music is American music and all you pinko liberals should just shut up with your opinons becuase we don't care. I don't care what you think. That dixie chick didn't have no right to say what she did and she should be band from the radio and playing. Toby Kieth is a real American who beleves in American values. Its time we take this country back from all the minortys and send them all back to where they came from! It makes me sick all the minortys on welfare and taking jobs from real Americans and then suporting our enemy. Go home!!!!!!! |

Keith responded to Maines’ criticism during a Dec. 14, 2002, interview with CMT.com writer Craig Shelburne. During the conversation, Keith said, "I’m a songwriter. She’s not. She can say my song is ignorant, then it’s ignorant for her to say that because she’s not a songwriter."
