This was my first year ever coaching volleyball to eleven 8th grade girls! They have come a long way from the first day of practice, and like to give myself a good pat on the back every once in awhile. It wasnt until we have a victory at our last game of the season, before the big Tournment weekend, that I get a parent who is very upset with my abilities as a coach. She said that she was upset that her daughter ("and others on the team") were not getting a fair chance for playing time during games, and that things had better change before the tournament. Now, granted it's volleyball. We have a "starting 6" who start every game. They are our best players, and those who come to practices, have good attitudes and want to play. Of course her daughter is one of those who have an attitude while on the sidelines, has no ambition or effort during practices. Go figure it had to be her parent. She came to me the next practice to apologize and said she went to the Ath. Director about it. Should I question myself as a coach? and believe her? Our team has won 4 out of 10 games! Thats ridiculously awesome for a "b" level team! And the fact that she came up to me until the season was over? YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING! ugh - 1st time coach... really contemplating if its worth the drama. |

As an ex-coach of high school baseball, I whole-heartedly agree with your appraisal of parental interference in their children's athletic endeavors. In fact, those types of parents drove me away from coaching at that level. My question to Coach Hyder is how many parents showed up at your coaches-parent meeting? It was my experience that parents want to interfere as long as they don't have to justify their actions or be confronted with the coaches' philosophy of sports. |
