Dixie Chicks Pay a Price for Free Speech

Bush's recent ultimatum has sparked intensive online debate amongst the war supporters and dissenters. And in this war of words, the bird with the sharpest claw happens to be the dove.

LittleVineVa I wasn't a fan of country music at all until i heard the Dixie Chicks one day singing about Earl and I fell in love with their awesome voices and hillarious song, among their other songs which is awesome. I will support them just because they were right in what they said, and to all of the you dc haters...kiss my bush, repub, welfare, hating azzzzzzz! If I ever see someone stomp a DC CD I will smack the hell out of you. 12/4/2009
Sara Dixie Chicks were not dissing the Soldiers efforts, but their deaths as they die in vain for an Ignorant president. They did not mean half of what these ignorant Americans are saying. Anyone dissing them just because they love our American Soldiers and they see how horrid them being sent to war for nothing is so absolutely absurd is wrong? But it is ok for all of the world to enter our boarders and live on foodstamps that many Americans cannot even get, that actually need them. Our taxes are so outrageous just so we can feed the world? What is this country? We are the scum on the bottom of the worlds shoe, and die for those that hate us? Let them fight their own war. Protect Isreal only for they and those that support them are of GOD only, remember your BIBLE? Dixie Chicks carry on, you have done nothing wrong but speak out against and evil, evil, President, not that I support Obama either for he is as they are. Stupid! Stop supporting the world America, support your own people, in the end we will fight together and all of these that you defend will destroy us in the end if you don't! We have no friends except the Allied Nations and Israel and don't ever forget it. We haven't had a caring President since Clinton but oh he did as the Repubs did, the only difference is he got caught? Come on now, don't be as the Pharasees, be as American as you can be and stand up against meaningless wars and stop hating your fellow citizens as the world does, be as one in GOD! 12/4/2009
aussiefella some people are just too patriotic 12/7/2008
Johnny Dustin...Americans are not very educated ,they need an image at every two words in order to understand what they are trying to read, same goes for Bush who never read a book in his whole life..Yes I agree with Bush when he wants to solidify the borders....its gonna protect our culture !!

Johnny the french man from Quebec
8/25/2007
Mark Thishler I too am ashame of Bush ....Bush is not an authentic Texan 8/25/2007
M.G. I saw the show "SHUT UP AND SING" truly remarkable I have a new found respect for the Dixie Chicks and I will support them 100 % We need to stand up for peace and put an end to hate and war mongering. Those who are in favour of war are not paying attention to the stories of totally f-d up soldiers returning and political manipulation of our freedoms and rights. 8/3/2007
Dustin Simply stated "Americans are idiotic redneck facsists" (Dustin) Maybe those americans who support Bush should learn about what they are supporting before making an un-educated decision. Thank God I am CANADIAN!!!! 10/5/2006
Garrett E. The only thing more scary than this article is the fact that there are people in the US who still support Bush. He is a liar, and his lies have resulted in the deaths of over 2500 American soldiers as well as God knows how many Iraqis. Obviously, the guy who wrote this article didn't care about the babies in Iraq, and it is apparent now that he--like Bush--doesn't care about people who fight for their country. Why didn't all of these people who supported the invasion and occupation of Iraq sign up and fight? Why don't the Bush twins enlist? The war machine that generates money for daddy's pockets only works if other people's kids sacrifice their lives for it. Historians will look back on the Bush years as one of the darkest periods in US history.

And NZgirl, YOU ROCK! Thanks for your contribution.
7/6/2006
Sarah i agree with ya 100% 7/5/2006
NZgirl Blah Blah Blah.. everyone here is all up for free speech. As if. Ever notice that there's always a "but"? a proviso.. a disclaimer. Sure lets all support free speech.. unless the speaker is 'spouting off' something we don't want to hear. Unless the speaker is 'abusing their rights' or 'going too far'... for the love of all that is holy.. It's FREEDOM of SPEECH... thats the whole point.. people should FREE to SPEAK.. without punishment, without reservation, without fear... for those of you who believe that there are limits to this.. I sincerely think you have a warped understanding of the meaning of the term. Look it up.

It's hilarious in a seriously sick way to read some of these online comments.. Bush fights to free the world of terror!! Grargh!! Angry men with moustache, turban and big gun bad!!! Here come the almighty American army with their pet allies... dear God let us all rejoice!!

Fact of the matter is boys and girls.. IRAQ is NOT the only country that's lead had a string of tyrannous leaders. But is Bush preparing to go to war in the name of freedom for anyone else? No! Why?! You know the answer! Not everyone has oil.. not everyone has precious resources... or a bunch of people that have been under tyrannous rule for so long, they welcome a change... even if their chains are being upgraded rather than removed.

Give me a reason. Show me a cause that has no limit and I'll fight under your banner. Start a war in the name of freedom.. and ignore the rights of those on your doorstep... Start a war against terrorism... and focus on one country..

At least if you're gonna make it personal do it right.. your enemy is Bin Laden. He's supposed to be based in Afghanistan... So you go and invade Saddam in Iraq? Nice. That just makes a whole load of sense doesn't it?

This post may be out of date for some of you... who have now gone on to post on some other board about some other topic.. But not everybody can just push an issue out of their minds just because the news crews have gone home..

Lets not be petty about it people... Say what you want! Print what you want SING what you want... don't pretend to be fighting for freedom by boycotting someone else... all youre doing is trying to punish them for excercising theirs.

And vote for a smarter president next time. Geez.
6/16/2006
jenni I think they are the real deal and some people are just jealous, including our president. 3/25/2004
Siu Lue I dont completely agree with you John klim but I see your point... 8/21/2003
John klim before the war began I thought that it was justified because Saddam was a terrorist.
and I still am thankful that the US has 'liberated' the iraqi people from Saddam but we can also see that more and more US soldiers are dying every day.
(innocent young men)....,and we can also see that more and more iraqi people are getting fed up with the situation in iraq(lack of electricity, water etc...)

the discontent of the Iraqi people could very well result in a new attack on the US simmiliar to those on september 11 2001..
thus the US should be very careful with which country its going to 'choose next' as its target.

Selena I hear you Lucy and Laura!!! Freedom of speech is a privilege that some idiots take advantage of. In the case of the Dixie Chicks, however, they exercise it in a good way because they're only saying what other Americans don't have the guts to say about our racist and stupid pretentious president-George W. Bush. 8/6/2003
Laura Eric you are obviously a classy, highly educated individual. I bet you only use the name Eric to remain anonymous. Say it, you are really George W. Bush aren't you?! 7/10/2003
Lucy Hey Cheryl King! America is a great place! We have freedom of choice! It appears your choice was to submit your comment before you read it back to yourself, or you chose not to pay attention while attending your language arts class. 7/9/2003
Cheryl King The dixie chicks sucks and when you are in a war, no statements
against our serviceman should be made by any person with influence.
I wonder what they would feel like if while they perform the fans were
screaming bad remarks against them. I am proud to be an American
and I am ashame of the Dixie Chicks. I hope they put their music
out of business, they don't deserve
the American support. Freedom is a
priviledge and if it wasn't for the brave man and women who fought for us, it would not be a right, Drake? Think about this?
6/8/2003
Kevin McCabe If you run over there CD's just because they said something about Bush you are shattering the first amendment!!! The Bill of rights!!! All our natoins great leaders singed this!!!You are then saying that I can't speak!!! That is not what freedom is about!!! 5/16/2003
Drake Hoffman I think that this whole "dixie chicks" topic is crap!!!!! they have the right to say whatever they want to say!!!! They are americans, isn't that what america is about? freedom!!!! 5/16/2003
NOT american Enrique Morones, a brilliant man, mentioned a few things about this sorry government that should be brought to the attention of everyone. He pointed out the fact that America promotes freedom of speech, yet they bite the heads off of those who don't say what people want to hear. What the Dixie Chicks is just what they think and so what if people dont' like it. Also, another interesting point is that President Bush tries to make himself seem like the good guy through his effort in "Liberating Iraq." Mr. Morones goes on to show that Bush has no shame. With his stupid idea of war he has killed 5,000 civilian Iraquis with his bombs. It is also mentioned that if he's so interested in liberating Iraq will he go on to liberate Cuba, China, North Korea or only the countries that have oil? Coincidence? Probably not! The American government is already sorry enough and the las thing it needs is to have a president like George Bush. Mr. Enrique Morones mentions also asks what give the US the right to use 25% of the world's natural resources? America feels like they have the right to criticize everyone, but themselves when torture in the US is just around the corner. Take a look at what happens to the immigrants killed by "Operation Gatekeeper." 5/15/2003
Raza Anyone who supports Bush IS a Nazi and you probably are one too. Who in their right mind supports Bush's "War for Peace" ? 5/15/2003
ERIC we should boycott the dixie chicks 5/12/2003
ERIC I LOVE CHICKEN
5/12/2003
American Man Screw the dixie chicks and screw the anti-war people 5/4/2003
ISE Bitchesrule, talk about hostile behavior! WOA! A little diplomacy goes a long long way. Learn some new words to replace the crude curse words.
The best thing the Chicks fans can do is plain ignore the behavior of those who are boycotting and stomping on their cd's. Go out and have a great time at their concerts buy their cds. The best revenge, it is said, is living well, if listening to the Chicks makes you feel good, you are living well.
Just be careful some redneck prowar junkie doesn't exhibit some of that hostile behavior! Especially if he is a Texan, GW's looking pretty good to alot of people right now. I am sure any home state boy who makes President is going to be in higher favor than any popular musician.

If GW"S budget goes through veterans stand to lose some of their benefits. Ironic isn't it.
5/4/2003
IspeakEnglish Brad needs to learn how to spell. 5/3/2003
Brad I have more respect for a bag laddy than I do traider Natalie. Who does she think she is? Good bye to the 'Chicken Chicks' 5/2/2003
Rick S. The 'Chicks'should move to another country. How about France?. They do not deserve to live in a country with a great President like ours. See ya ! 5/2/2003
freaky well i think it was freedom of speech, i dont agree with them but it was all their opinionand im ok with that. 4/30/2003
Billy Bob OK, enough with the Dixie Chicks, when is GW's country album coming out?
Proposed future title "With or Without you."
Without people that have nerve to say anything, how will we ever have good recordings coming from Crawford?
4/29/2003
Chamel The Dixie Chicks are one out of many that have said things about Mr.Bush that is negative. The real problem is people who are jealous because their opinion doesn't matter in the eye of the public. So they take it out on the STARS, who have done nothing wrong. 4/29/2003
Marmot God has been boycotted, the niggeros have taken away some of our free speech but the people still have their own opinions and control of some of their money and what they spend it for.
So do the people still have the right of free speech and expression like the Dicksey Chickens?
Think about it!
4/27/2003
Kate Whether or not you cheer the Chicks right to exercise freedom of speech or boycott them because of the same, isn't it time to get on with what needs to be done , welcoming home our troops and making sure our economy is healthy enough to offer jobs to those who wish to re enter the civilian working force. What a trivial thing to make such a big fuss over, how about the thousands of Americans who face each day with the chance they may become homeless? What will happen to the thousands of children who are abandoned or left orphaned every year? COME ON PEOPLE!!! Choose to make a difference to your fellow Americans by not letting the media trap you into the sensationalism they peddle to you. The Chicks are musicians not politicians boycott them, listen to them, if you could only put the passion you have shown in reaction to this incident into a truely worthy one how great of American would you be?!Awesome! 4/26/2003
Lynne I am not a fan of the Dixie Chicks and I don't care what their political opinions and they don't care about mine. The difference is since they are entertainers, their opinions come into my house uninvited through TV news and radio. I could not stand in the middle of my workplace and announce my political views and expect that my associates and customers embrace me just because I have spoken in the name of Freedom of Speech. They would also have the freedom to call me a fool and distance themselves from me if they did not like what they hear. And if the distance caused a financial impact, my boss would find a way to let me go. If the Dixie Chicks have offended their customers with their freedom of speech, they shouldn't complain when their customers react in kind with their own freedom of speech. The Dixie Chicks'customers want to hear their music not their politics. 4/26/2003
Janelle Now that they have proclaimed the war over, and the struggle for the proper leaders for Iraq begins, perhaps those who would bash and threaten the Dixie Chicks would like to fill Saddams shoes. This regressing and reversing Bush's implied intent. These bashers want to repress the citizens right to express their disappointment with the choice an ELECTED leader has made. What a very NON-American idea. Many of my relatives have served in the military and they all agree that the Chicks are exercising what they fought for FREEDOM of speech. 4/26/2003
richard Goodby Earl...GOODBY DIXIE CHICKS....NO MORE CDs from this guy! 4/25/2003
Amanda I think the "angry americans/texans" are playing the part of the fool right now. No amount of ridicule will end the careers of these three women. It's a shame when someone actually voices their opinion no matter what the risk, and you cowards who will probably never have the guts to speka your mind sit back and judge. 4/25/2003
Me Freedom of speach allows an individual to say what he/she wants to say.....but it does not guarantee the right to commercial success if one says something controversial.....If Natalie doesnt know how to close her fat mouth, she shouldnt act so surprised that many Americans dont want the music she sells... 4/25/2003
Michael I want my freedom of speech too. I will protest the Dixie Chicks 4/24/2003
Chamel I support the dixie chicks, they have the freedom of speech. I from Texas and I'm ashamed to be from the same state as Mr.Bush. 4/24/2003
Joe K. Our men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces have fight and died for their freedom to bash our country and trash our president overseas! Too bad they don't have the guts to do it here! They are shameless! These useful idiots are giving sympahty and comfort to our enemies with their anti-American, caustic rhetoric. They need to be able to put up or shut up. If they can't take the heat for their rants, they need to leave our country. Better yet, why don't they go over to Baghdad and visit that prison where our brave soldiers found 150 chidlrens locked up to not wanting to join thekillng fields of a bloody regime? Why don't they see the blood-soaked streets? Or, they places where the women were tortured, raped and murdered? Maybe then they'd change their tune and appreciate what they have and what America has given them!!! 4/24/2003
Dave The Dixie Chicks are nothing but a bunch of cry babies. If they hate this country so much, they need to leave! They have to learn they're a price to be paid for dissent. Besides, where was their outrages when Clinton was dropping bombs everywhere to distract from his impeachment hearings for having an affair with that Lewinsky bimbo!

They are the prime example of the Left, who want their right to be heard but they don't want anybody else to be heard by disagreeing with them!
4/24/2003
Susan Reed In listening to the Dixie Chicks being interviewed by Diane Sawyer, there is still no explanation as to why big Natalie said what she said. There is absolutely no excuse for it and I hope their careers are OVER. 4/24/2003
Ian-Alan My problem with the enitire issue is the notion that someone else is trying to make boycotting decisions for me which I can make for myself. For people to call radio stations and demand that the Dixie Chicks songs be taken of their playlist is one thing. For the stations to actually do it crosses the line. I should be able to decide if I want to turn the song off while listening to the radio station myself. That's MY RIGHT. These stations that are taking the right from their listeners are doing everyone a disservice. It is such hypocrisy to preach free speech et al. only to have other's limited. If you want to boycott the Dixie Chicks, fine. However boycott it for yourself. Don't make the decision for me as well. 4/24/2003
Dave We have the right to free speech but my God use a little common sense. There is no need to threaten them. They seem to be doing a great job of digging their own grave. I will continue to support the boycotts. 4/24/2003
Amanda When: May 1, 2003.
Where: Bi-Lo Center front steps, Greenville, SC
What: Dixie Chicks protest!

Email DixieChickProtest@hotmail.com if you're going! This is the first stop on the Dixie Chicks US Tour!!!
4/22/2003
Heidi Jo You may not like what the Dixie Chicks or any other Peace protester has to say, but the fact of the matter is, this is America. I can't think of anything more American than freedom of speech! I find it hard to believe that our militiary is discouraged by anti-war protesters. These men and women fight for our right to speak out - even against our government. They fight for our right to peacfully protest. They fight for our right to burn the American flag when the freedoms it represents are being denied. I support our militiary and even support the war, but at the same time I respect those who do not agree and I respect their freedoms. 4/19/2003
BD Peters My vote may have been a hanging chad, and my voice nothin' more than a breath against a hurricane, but I have one tool that is even more precious than the right of the Dixie Chicks, aka Seditious Twits right to spout off. That is my right to change stations when I hear 'em on the air. 4/18/2003
Bloppo Anyone got change for a "five"? THANKS. 4/18/2003
Tammy Ok-let's forget for a minute that the Dixie Chicks do not understand why we are at war against Iraq. Lets forget that there are people in this nation that are against this war and people that support the effort. That situation is as old as time. People who oppose this war are not going to make one little dent in the ongoing plan in the war with Iraq. So, that being said....isn't the most important thing now to support our men and women who are over there fighting for what THEY believe in???? Anti-war demonstrators have NO idea how much they discourage our military. SUPPORT THEM!!!! They need to feel our love and support now more than ever. We can disagree with the situation, but still love those involved. None of us like war, but let's unite and support those who are LIVING it every day. 4/17/2003
me the dixie chicks are awesome!! 3/28/2003
hi War is Dumb!!!!!! 3/28/2003
Middle American To the moron who calls himself "Peace":

You said: "We do not have the right to hand pick leaders for other countries, they too are entitled to democracy, even if it doesn't fit our definition."

Did you know that a DEMOCRACY allows you freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to work, freedom for women to vote alongside men, etc. What Iraq has is a dictatorship, you idiot -- and none of the afore mentioned democratic rights! Stop sucking on your bong and come up for air, provided you have any brain cells left.
3/22/2003
Dorothy M Those who do not agree with my opinion are just as free to voice their own. I have no beef with opposing opinions. But a radio station, licensed by the FCC has no business banning music that a multitude of people listen to - both pro-war and anti-war, pro-Bush and anti-Bush. If the Dixie Chicks' music plays, the ones who oppose are free to switch the station, or turn off the radio. Those who agree with them however are denied the right to hear the music we want. Is this democracy? We have Howard Stern on the radio and TV. I feel he is a disgrace to America, but no matter how I feel about Howard Stern, I agree he has the right to air his trash. When he is on the radio - I switch the station. When he is on TV - I change the channel. Is that so difficult?
3/22/2003
Amy Shame on them, and I was a fan but I would be more then happy to boycott them for their ignorance!! 3/21/2003
Scott Walters As usual, whenever there is a war (or in the case of the Dixie Chicks, the threat of a war -- remember that this comment happened while we were still debating), Americans think that critical thinking skills are "un-American." Even if you are pro-war, isn't one of the reason you are fighting to prevent the "freedom" that we have in America to think our own thoughts? The right to be in opposition is one of the things that makes America special. Except in times of war, when apparently we are supposed to check our brains at the border. Transport this attitude to 1939 Germany, and you can see the obvious dangers. I applaud the Dixie Chicks, I applaud Senator Byrd and Senator Daschl, and I applaud the constitutional right to express my opinion.

P.S. It would be nice if those who are outraged about people "bashing our president" remembered how much they and others bashed President Clinton. President-bashing is part of the American way. Get over it.
3/21/2003
peace Mr.Scott Spicciati,
The checks and balances of this country and in the world were created for a reason (the congress, senate and UN)...but unfortunately they are not working at this time. The protestors are alot more than the polls would have you believe and keeping that in mind know that that would amount to more than half of this country ( in U.S. only). But isn't amazing that our representatives do not believe that they need to represent us at this time. We do not have the right to hand pick leaders for other countries, they too are entitled to democracy, even if it doesn't fit our definition.
Remember:
One world...one mankind...PEACE.
3/21/2003
Lindsay Scott,
I couldn't have said it better! Even though the Dixie Chicks, or anyone for that matter, might not understand the necessary reasons for war, that does not make it appropriate for them to bash our President. Especially to another country! Shame on them!!!
3/21/2003
Espradilla Praise for the Chicks. i'll cont to listen towhatever they sing, the truth. May they prosper abroad if not in their homeland 3/20/2003
