JRW This is a sweet article but hardly reflects contemporary American (US) Christmas traditions. I'm curious about the origin. It seems to make repeated reference to "Catholic vs. non-Catholic" instead of the more appropriate "Christian vs. non-Christian". Virtually no one in this country waits until Christmas eve to put up a Christmas tree and a similarly small number observe the 12th day of Christmas as the day to take it down. Also, the choice of an articial tree vs a real tree is more often a matter of ecological concerns or fire safety than money. A good artificial tree is not less expensive than a comparable real tree. I would caution against the advice given in "Gadgets/Household Appliances". These days electronic gisfts may be more appreciated by girls (and their parents) than make-up kits. Also, there is a sizable number of women who would be offended by an appliance designed for doing housework. Finally, the article treats letters to Santa Claus, stockings hung by a fireplace or similar place, and the belief of children that Santa comes down the chimney, as bygone traditions. All of these are still very much alive and currently practiced. The historical references are probably fine, but the references to current culture should be better defined. This does not describe the current US culture, but may be accurate somewhere else. 12/27/2011
Lennie Harrison If the brotherly love that is emphasized from Thanksgiving til New Years could be lived out every day of the year by everyone in every nation and country in the world, it would be almost like heaven. 12/25/2010
