| Richard Lewis | Eating sweets or high-carbs (pasta, breads, cereals) cause the pancreas to produce serotonin in the brain. One is relaxed and feels overly (I emphasize-Overly) calm and mellow. And, although not all that "sleepy" is willing to attempt sleep. The mind usually keeps working at the regular level - causing this attempt of a "nap" to merely be a light shut-eye rather than a deep type of REM sleep one has when very worn out. Serotonin can be extremely good thing when experiencing overly stressful situations. Or serotonin can be a nuisance when trying to concentrate in one's studies or repeated disciplines of mundane thoughts. To avoid the accumulation of a mid-day serotonin "let-down," coffee or tea, candy, food with any starch should be avoided. Stick to munchies like nuts, vegetable salads, fish and foods very anti-starch and sugars. The reason people smoking marijuana experience the "munchies" (that can be extremely beneficial to Chemo/Radiation therapies) is the high increase in serotonin from the "high." It is a very positive part of cancer and those experiencing chronic pain. But for those wishing to participate in a daily activity of daily activity - Eat Veggies, Fish, Nuts and such, and steer clear of the sweets and carbs. | 11/26/2010 |
| RJ | I think this is great advice. I'm going to try to stray away from sugary foods for a couple of days and see what happens. I work the night shift, so I need energy to avoid falling asleep. | 9/28/2010 |

| Luke | This articles seems to focus on a correlation between the food eaten and the fatigue after eating and does not adequately address other possibilities. While I don't disagree that eating foods with high amounts of flour and sugar in them will cause this effect, I must say that this is not the case in my scenario. I eat salad everyday for lunch, using only fresh vegetables and Italian dressing, yet I still become so tired after eating that if I were to lie down I could take a nap. Most of my diet consists of salads, yet this only happens after lunch. If I have work to do, I will even skip lunch just to avoid this effect. Even caffeine doesn't prevent this. :/ | 5/21/2010 |
