Getting the US forces into the war was important. Better a few baby steps then a too early attempt at a major cross channel invasion they were not ready for. North Africa proved an important learning experience for men and equipment. Even Sicily was not a delay. In my opinion the invasion of Italy was the delay. It would have been better to make Germany hold down a larger area while sending forces to England from the Mediteranian. Smaller missions to keep the Germans guessing and a few major units left in the area would have been better. The conquest of North Africa openned up many opportunities and freed up shipping. |
