ray 6 years after a barium enema, I am passing barium coated in a hard, rubbery shell...My GI had no idea what it was and it was sent to a pathologist who discovered it was barium. what is going on, and how much longer can I expect to be passing these. Have been passing a few every month or so for 2 years. Where did the barium migrate to anyway? I also had a colon scope in the past 6 weeks and at the time nothing was found...How can I get your response? thank you 8/10/2009
Mark Lui MD Dear L. Smith:
There is already a way. It’s CT Colonograghy. The complication rate of 1/1,000 associated with colonoscopy is reduced to zero (or almost zero). The complication rate of 1/10,000 associated with heavy sedation is reduced to absolutely zero. The accuracy rate is said to be slightly better than colonoscopy by CT radiologists and said to be slightly worse by gastroenterologists. However, it is NOT AS "SEXY". It will take several more years for it to over take colonoscopy.

L. Smith Will they (doctors ) ever come up with a far, far better way of detecting polyps on the colon in the near future, instead of this BARBARIC way of the present colonoscopy? 5/24/2009
Mark Lui MD Thanks to Dr. Michael C. I agree that the word "democracy" under
"SOLUTION" is incorrect and should be replaced with "free market".
Regarding your other criticism, I suggest you read up on the recent
articles of JAMA.
