Chelsei ...the blondie over here is completely and utterly lost! 9/19/2011
yang jc chansh TOTALLY CRAZY! 9/14/2011
chris the two is used twice in this question. The two is factored into the 27 and the three dollars for the three men makes 30 9/7/2011
Dagama You killed it . 5/25/2011
David The arithmetic is totally right, but the logic is off. You're missing something.

This is another approach which is more LOGICALLY sound.

10x3=30
(10x3)-5=30-5 add in $5 discount
((9+1)x3)-2=(27+3)-2 each guy gets $1 back and the tip is $2
30=30 simplify

Don't forget, numbers don't lie. People lie.

Brent You are wrong. There is 30 dollars. 30-5=25 (each took back 1 and gave 2 to the other person.) now if you add them all up you get 27. then SUBTRACT the tip. NOT add because they had the money, but gave the tip to the other person. This adds ups to 25 dollars. the correct answer! 3/2/2011
jesse 9x3 is 27, 2 of which was the roomservice guy's tip, making the place cost $25. otherwise they would be spending $4 too much your way, or 5 if you wanted to add to $30. 12/18/2010
spear all they paid was $27; $25 for the room to the motel(after 5$ discount) + $2 as tip... u added the two to d wrong place 12/8/2010
undefined hm... some guy must have took an extra dollar jk its the way way u did the math at the end but stil..weird 12/6/2010
Ben Idiot they only spent $27 dollars. cost became $25 with the discount and they gave a 2 dollar tip. 11/29/2010
Nitin Tomer They spent total: 9*3=27
Where 25 goes to Room rent and 2 for tip
9/29/2010
JAVED everything adds up tp $30 ! its just the way its said in words which makes a dollar missing ! 8/20/2010
AKL Sorry. Math jokes aren't funny unless you don't get math.
They got back $1.66 each; the tip came out of $ .66 x 3.
8/10/2010
joes WRONG! WHERE DID U GET UR MATH SKILLS?! OK... 3 GUYS... 10$ EACH. GOES INTO $30 FOR THE MOTEL. $5 BACK GETS 25 FOR THE MOTEL. THEY GIVE 2 TO THE MATINENECE... THAT MAKES 27! 27 PLUS 3 IS 30! HAHAHA 7/28/2010
sagar math is a very interesting subject if u ar interested in it 6/8/2010
Adam Burton they got $5 back before tipping the room service guy... so they spent $25 for the room, thats $8.333 each not $9. .. i see what u tried to do but mathamatically its correct... not mind boggling at all 4/5/2010
SarahH one of the men's deposits is short a dollar- since the manager gave 5 dollars back (essentially one of the men paid $9 and the other two paid $8) then they each took a dollar- (now two of the men deposited 9$ and one deposited $10) the two extra dollars were split from the original amount paid by two of the men. Essencially, it doesn't matter because the manager has $25 and the men have $1 each. The manager just basically paid his serviceman!

Also, another way to look at it is 25/3=8+1. the one dollar is the "missing dollar". :)

Michelle I'm going to have to agree with Kea, the rest of you people are kinda dumb when it comes to math, if you do the math properly it works out the way she's done it. I guess this really proves that women are better than men when it comes to math. LOL 10/30/2009
Kea LOL, you cannot do math! the guys paid 30 but got back 5.. 30-5=25... They took back $1 each.. 25+3=28 and they left the remaining $2 for the mad. 28+2=30! Lol... But the way you did it really gives you $29.00 instead of $30.00 10/24/2009
Lou you're just doing the math wrong. Each guy spent a total of 9 dollars, which means, in TOTAL, they paid 27 dollars. The other 3 dollars, are in the pockets of each of the guys.
If they got a 5 dollar discount, that means they paid 25 dollars for the room, not 30. which means, they each paid 8.3 dollars for the room (8.3 * 3 = 25 approx). Now, if they tipped 2 dollars (which btw seems kinda cheap) that means each of them paid around 66 cents for that. (.66 * 3 = 2, aprox) 25 + 2 = 27. which of course, means the other 3 dollars were split up, and divided. IN CONCLUSION. they paid 9 dollars each, including tipping the guy. NOT 9 dollars, plus tip.

Tiff At first I was like...what?...and then I though to myself...hmmmm...where is that other dollar? 7/6/2009
Joke Lover The reason that this happens is because they were only given back 5 dollars instead of 6... meaning that 2 guys technically took 2 dollars and 1 guy only 1.when the two guys that had the money left over gave it to the room service guy they were actually left with 8 dollars instead of 9 like the other guy. 8x2+9=25 plus the other 5 dollars make up 30. the only problem was how you approached in solving this question. 7/2/2009
Praveen Kumar VERY SIMPLE MY DEAR FRIEND

IN 27 YOU HAVE ALREADY COUNT THE TIP EXP. WHY ARE U ADDING THIS AGAIN. DON TRY TO BE SMART ON THIS CACLUB... HMM

JUST KIDDING. NICE SMALL PUZZLE.

Hotel Cost 25 A
Tip Exp. 2 B
Total Exp 27 A+B

Total Amount was 30 C
Balance in hand 3 D
Total Expenses 27 C-D

toni someone needs alesson in algebra here and its not me
they pay 30 get 5 back so dats 25 spent. 2$ is given to the room service guy so dats 27 spent. 30 - 27 is 3 which eas the 3$ split between dem so the get 1$ each duh :0
5/27/2009
saima Jokes abt maths...!not really interesting 5/26/2009
aly thas cool 5/12/2009

Math Geek Total Rent= $30
Individual Rent =$10
Total Concession=$5
Individual concession = 1.67
Actual Rent =$25
Individual Rent= $8.33
MOney back = $1
So the amount = 8.33 + 1= $9.33

They seem to have spent only $9.
From whose pocket did $0.33 come?
4/17/2009
Benhur They pay 30$ out of which 5$ was a discount. So the sum is 25$. 25$ / 3 people comes to 8.34. They take back 1$ each. Now the total is 9.34$. When this amount is multiplied back into 3. the total is 28$. And the tip is 2$ so the calculation is right. Each one is spending 9.34$ instead of 9$. This is the only answer for the same...HaHaHa 4/16/2009
Abhijit When the guys contribute $9 each it comes to $27 which includes the $2 that are given as a tip to the room service. the remaining $3 have been divided in between them, $1 each.
hope you have some better explanation if you disagree ;-)
