Jason Uhm...the Emancipation Proclamation did NOT free the slaves once and for all. It ONLY freed slaves in the Confederate states. there were still slaves in the United States. This is major misinformation! 5/18/2010
Mark "I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so." " This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing Government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it, or their revolutionary right to dismember or overthrow it . Abe Lincoln 1st Inaugural address………….. 2/22/2009
Rebel Too simplistic. The "Civil" war was not about slavery, it was about much more. The Emancipation Proclamation never really freed anyone. Lincoln only used slavery to garner European support. North could not afford to lose control of Southern agriculture or Sea Ports. Lincoln is the only US President to ever declare martial law and suspend the US constitution. Should not be a revered man. The South only wanted self-governance. 1/25/2009
