As a PA manufacturer of cat furniture for over 2 decades, I'd like to offer the following observations: First of all, all sisal rope is manufactured in sisal mills. It is run through machines at relatively high speeds. Some oil is necessary for lubrication and to make the raw agave plant fibers pliable. The best way to approach purchasing sisal rope is to think in terms of MINIMIZING the amount of oil that has been used in manufacturing. How do you do that? If it SMELLS overly oily, or if there are traces of oil or oil stains on the packaging, reject the rope. I've used 3/8 Brazilian sisal rope on my cat scratchers for years with excellent results, and I've never had a purchase returned due to some reason associated with the oil content. I would not place a lot of creedence in a vendor's claims of "unoiled" sisal. Your potential supplier should be able to tell you with authority about his or her product. Many times, a vendor is just a middleman, and is just telling you something with no basis in fact. Also, if you plan to paint your creation, you should examine the contents and warnings on the paint can. Since cats will scratch on the paint, and they will also clean their paws and claws, you want to avoid toxins in paint. As for the underlying structure goes, the use of particle board has become all too common in cat furniture, especially the product coming from China. This material can be more brittle than a plain wooden 1x6 from your local home center. Finally, if you should decide to PURCHASE this type of item, rather than make it, watch out for product photos featuring KITTENS. Whenever possible I include my 2 adult cats in my photos. this shows that the cat product is designed to be used comfortably by grown up cats. |
