Jordan W. When Pablo Picasso started creating his master pieces a lot of people had never seen anything like it, so how do you think they reacted….. They were amazed, not all in the same way. Like many artist he was not born into a rich family, but he worked for it until he was wealthy. His eye were not set on the money, but on his art work. He had trouble and problems like every body else but he made some of the best paintings in many people’s opinions.
Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain (October 25, 1881) his father a painter and his mother was a housewife. He moved between the countries Spain and France often and met a painter named Carlos Casagemas. Picasso and Casagemas shared a studio; Casagemas killed himself due to a stump in his artist career. Pablo Picasso was very depressed after his death.
Due to the death of his friend his grief caused him to start painting in the "blue period". In the blue period he painted paintings that showed grief and sadness using the shades of blue such as The Le Gourmet (1901), Self-Portrait (1901), The Tragedy (1903), La vie (1903), The Old Guitarist (1903), La Celestina (1904), Le Repas Frugal (1904), Woman Ironing (1904). His depression did no end in the Blue Period it followed him all the way till his Cubist Period which was right after his Rose Period. He painted paintings such as (in his Rose period) the Woman in a Chemise (Madeleine) (1904-05), Lady with a Fan (1905), Two Youths (1905), Harlequin Family (1905), La famille de saltimbanques (1905), Boy with a Dog (1905), The Girl with a Goat (1906), Composition: The Peasants (1906).
World War I started in 1914 and two of his buddies Apollinaire and Braque were drafted, and his mistress Eva died the next year. He meets his wife Olga Koklova on a trip to Rome when Jean Cocteau asked him to design costumes for a ballet called Parade. The designs were not liked by most audiences, but that didn’t stop him from continuing with his designs for theater and arts.
The town of Guernica, Spain was bombed in April 1937 in the Spanish Civil War. The painting Guernica shows innocent people who suffered from this tragedy, this painting gave Picasso worldwide recognition which now hangs in the Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid.
Surviving the 2nd World War he decided to join the French Communist Party, they were happy to have a famous painter in their party. The party required a lot of time from Picasso; it needed his painting skills for posters for rallies. They requested the posters to have socialist heroes; the difficult part was satisfying himself and the French Communist Party.
As an older man Picasso was more of a man for the children, he enjoyed playing and helping his son. He built cardboard wings for his son so he could jump higher. He was an older man but still had energy and productivity for his beloved family with 2nd wife Jacqueline Roque (she became a famous model). As an older man Picasso worked on sculptures mostly. His most well known is the Chicago metal sculpture. His painting Seated Woman sold in auction for $800, 000 and has been increasing in value since. From his early days his artwork changed the way people thought and will continue to inspire many people.
Pablo Picasso passed away on 8 April 1973 in Mougins, France, while he and his wife Jacqueline entertained friends for dinner. His final words were "Drink to me, drink to my health, you know I can’t drink anymore." He was buried at the Chateau of Vauvenargues near Aix-en-Provence, a property he had bought in 1958 and Jacqueline his wife lived in between 1959 and 1962. Jacqueline Roque didn’t want his children Claude and Paloma to attending the funeral. Devastated and lonely after the death of Picasso, Jacqueline Roque took her own life by gunshot in 1986 when she was 59 years old.
