Aly I was really glad I found this article. My Dr switched me from low does to ultra low because she thought I should just give it a try and I have been having a lot of spotting. This article made me feel a little better about that! 4/1/2009

Carole Apologies for the late reply, I have been o/seas for a couple of months.
You do not state your medical status or whether or not you smoke etc. and a woman's health status DOES impact on how she will react to birth control meds. Portia is a generic birth control pill containing levonorgestrel and one of the less serious, though unwelcome, side effects for women, is freckles or a darkening of the skin, which obviously applies to you.
It would be irresponsible of me to recommend an alternative brand of contraceptive pill, as a doctor is the best person to talk you in your specific case, however, Yasmin, which contains a different type of progestin (drospirenone) to most of the other combination pills, is worth asking your doctor about as a trial. ph Whic pill do you recommend to stop darkeneing of the skin? The one I use now is Portia and causes skin to darken . 9/21/2008
