| cjoanie | Both cats and dogs can make a great pet. It just depends on the individual. Myself, I prefer dogs. | 7/28/2011 |

| Dana | Cats, dogs, hamsters, guinea pigs...they are all adorable. Those who are "cat haters" or "dog haters" are heartless monsters. A genuine animal (and nature) lover would never hate on innocent creatures | 2/21/2011 |

| Cognito | There are many more dogs breeds to begin with and only about forty cat breeds that are recognized by whoever. I gather there are quite a bit more cat breeds in the works so to speak. Seems like aside from some of the more extreme breeds like the longhaired cats and the larger ones like Ragdoll the rest of them seem like they are very much alike. There is physically much more variety with a dog. Had three cats quite a while ago who were all different and pretty good pets though so I don't mean to sound like they are boring or something. Mostly indoor cats but did take them out on a harness every so often. The male Siamese mix we had actually was quite a prey catcher. He was great at retrieving birds, mice, etc. On his own not on command of course. Never had a dog before but wouldn't mind a dog at this point if I was able to house one in the apartment where I live right now. | 11/14/2009 |

| E C | Well, I honestly don't think that the fact that cats are mean to strangers as a bad thing, but I don't think that you've even looked at the dog's side. Dogs are very intelligent animals, which can be trained not to bark all the time. Also, as far as I'm concerned, most dogs are so much cuter than cats. Cats are often posed in elegant settings being treated like kings, while many of them have what I instinctively see as a hostile face. Dogs are usually posed as playful and happy and affectionate, as they are in real life. They have a humbler cuteness. I highly disagree that cats have had it rough since medieval times -- maybe they rarely were thought of as witch companions, but mostly, they've had it much better than dogs. Ancient Egyptians literally worshipped cats, and far back in history, cats have always been treated as royalty, whereas dogs would be making themselves useful working in the fields or tending to their owners. I also disagree that cats are more loyal than dogs. Sure, they can run away, but then where would they get their fancyfeast? The fact that they choose to stay with owners seems to be more of a convenience thing. Dogs are affectionate creatures that, yes, areplayful and loving to strangers and owners alike. But they still respond differently to the other -- dogs often bark at strangers, warning their masters. They are also more likely to got out of their way to please their masters than they are to please strangers. Of course. Dogs are widely more useful than cats are. Yes, cats are thought to be useful mouse and insect catchers, but that is actually debatable. Dogs can be used to guide the blind, retrieve things for their masters, guard things or places, herd animals, or even protect their owners (and some studies suggest that they can even sniff out cancers). I've never seen a cat to do any of these things, and most cats I've known are even useless as exterminators. My own dog goes outside, and is actually quite low-maintenence. I do not groom her every day, but then, I don't exactly enter her in dog shows either. I would appreciate you specifying these "special foods" that dogs need, because apparently my store brand dog chow (which comes in a giant bag, unlike cats' several cans) must not be up to snuff. Really? Dog's need to be walked twice a day? Whoops! Because I only walk my dog (a small cocker spaniel mix) at my own convenience -- a.k.a. when I jog, which I don't do every day. Many people are under the impression that cats' affection and devotion are purely honest. However, recent studies suggest that cats' affection actually is solely selfish. I believe the article I read used the word "manipulative". They are far more concerned by what their owners can do for them then their actual owners, from what I've researched. |
