| Gloria | There has been an alarming rise in childhood obesity over the past thirty years in the United States alone. Due to the increasing amount of children with obesity it has become a significant problem in our country and posts many health issues for our children. There are approximately nine million children over the age of 6 that are obese just in the United States alone. With this growing problem many health related issues will impact the lives of our children. Overweight children are at a much higher risk of potential diseases such as: Cardiovascular Disease, high blood pressure, Type 2 Diabetes, and liver disease just to name a few. There are many contributing factors that can cause a child to be obese, and a child’s environment is not the sole factor with being obese. Contributing factors for a child to be or become obese are genetics, diet, and environment. If a child has parents that are overweight then the child does have a much greater risk of being overweight, as DNA cannot be changed. Children today need to be exposed to healthier nutritional food instead of eating at fast food restaurants. Children who eat more nutritional foods such as fruits/vegetables, higher fiber products, low-fat dairy products, and home cooked meals can make a positive impact on a child’s weight. Also a child who has greater exposure to physical activity in their lifestyles will also have an impact on a child’s weight. Parents who lead a more physical active lifestyle will increase their child’s willingness to participate in physical activities. Our lifestyles are promoted early on in our lives; therefore if we lead a healthier and nutritional lifestyle this will encourage our children to lead the same lifestyle. Parents who take on this responsibility will certainly decrease any health related issues that childhood obesity can cause |
