| morgan | The American civil war had a profound effect on the lives of slaves. It ultimately resulted in the abolition of slavery. Slaves first arrived in America in Virginia in 1619. The Underground Railway was a way by which slaves could find freedom. This was a method for northerners to help escaped slaves to find a place to live in free states or Canada. Free black Americans were usually the ones to plan and helped with the Underground Railroad. It is believed about 50,000 to 100,000 people used the Underground Railroad to escape to their freedom. The Underground Railroad was used mostly in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. | 4/20/2010 |

| Marionnc | I have seen allot of ignorant analogies of the Civil War, but this one is utterly moronic. You might try to perform some due diligence before writing any further analogies of this Era. Your best options in this case would be the Library of Congress, and the National Archives. A hint for understanding a soldiers true motives for fighting, are best found by reading the journals of actual soldiers, not newspapers. In the thousands of Confederate journals I have read, there are a lot of reasons given by individuals for fighting, ironically slavery is not mentioned in a single one of them. Your statement about Negros being closely watched is just out right ludicrous. Negros used for labor were primarily Freemen, and were payed $35.00 a month. In contrast a Confederate soldier was paid $7.00/$8.00 a month, with nearly 50,000 Negros confirmed as fighting of their own free will for the Confederacy. "There are at the present moment, many colored men in the Confederate Army doing duty...as real soldiers, having muskets on their shoulders and bullets in their pockets..." Frederick Douglas, former slave & abolitionist (Fall, 1861). Most contend that number was closer to 100,000, but in an effort to deny them their pensions, by the Union Government. Such records were altered, and in many cases by doing nothing more than striking a line through or just writing over the original text. They were just as maligned and oppressed as the white Southerners during the Union occupation, in allot of cases even more so, talk about a group being disenfranchised.. Try looking into photos of Confederate Veteran reunions. Pay records along with supportive documentation can be found in the Congressional authorized 130 volume publication "Official Records of the War of the Rebellion". Providing supportive citations will go a long way in getting over your Racist Bigotry, and bias. |

| Mark | I would suggest any student using the page to write reports to GO SOMEWHERE ELSE...I have never seen such biased incorrect information ever regarding the War of Northern Agression..or Lincolns War...DO NOT USE THIS SITE IF YOU WANT TO REPORT THE FACTS | 2/22/2009 |
| Mark | "Black American troops distinguished themselves and were instrumental in the North's victory?...you obviously know little about military history...black troops were the worse in the Union Army often times forced to fight at the point of a bayonet, and retreated at their first opportunity. They were mostly used in logistics and fought only a few times during the war after the SOuth had inflicted major casulaties on the North.. | 2/22/2009 |
| Mark | "The people in the North did not need slavery as much as the South did. The people living in the North owned, operated, and worked in factories and mills."...hey you failed to mention that Northerners used poor immigrants as their slaves as they come into port. They were cheaper than slaves, did not have to feed and house them, and were expendable as thousands or poor WHITE immigrants arrived in Northern ports EACH day...Get your facts correct please. These poor white workers were far worse off than any slave. | 2/22/2009 |
