zoma 4 The attack on pearl habor was a threat to America's intelligence on technology & one may be tempted to give Japan a kudos for that. But i believe the outcome of this act thought Japan a lesson that a son should never belittle his father's ability even while sleeping. ariana also a good thing to note that is after the bombing of pearl harbor japan was bombed by a nuclear bomb(much much wrose than the bomb pearl harbor got) and then surrendered...after that japan said that war doesnt do any good at all and they havnt been in war for over 60years because they learned war is stupid and doesnt help anything, so people cant really say"japanese are stupid and crazy" or "japanese are selfish" and such... 1/7/2011

Ken Utada The primary motivating factor for the attack on Pearl Harbor was the oil embargo by the USA. They felt they had no choice because without oil replenishment, their fleet would become immobile in 6 months. They feared possible Western occupation similar to what British did to China after the Opium War. Most Western nations cannot or will not understand the indelible negative impact the Opium War had on Japan. Its one of the reasons, they embraced military build up above everything else. Another factor not fully appreciated today is the astounding defeat of France and British armies by Wehrmacht in 39 and 40. It was an incredible feat: Germans did in 6 months no armies could do in 4 yrs of fighting during WWI. Japan was allied with Germany and Italy and at that moment in time; it was obvious Axis Power would win. After the Axis triumph, Japan hoped to real an "understanding " with the US. Remember USA at the time was isolationist in nature and the de facto leader was Charles Lindberg, an American icon, and an American Hero. Most of the Japanese military particularly the Army felt Americans won't fight. One of the most popular American cartoon at the time in Japan was Blondi where Dagwood was the forever hen pecked husband. Japanese Navy, particularly Adm Yamamoto, had a completely different view; he saw USA as a formidable enemy. Many in the Japanese Navy called their Army counter part as "horse droppings" Too bad Japanese Army generals did not read about Civil War Pickett's Charge and Battle of Franklin. They may have gained better insight about the nature of USA. 9/27/2010

Joseph Reilly I think that the Japanese had a good idea. I have never understood why there was not a concerted, immediate follow-up to the Pearl Harbor attack, by the Japanese. I think that the long term result would probably have been the same, Japanese defeat. However, the job of the USA would have been made much harder if the Japanese had taken better advantage of their early success. 4/2/2010
