| S. Warwick | I am Jamaican and have lived and worked in Jamaica for 44 years. The description of Jamaican clothing in this article seems to reflect the costumes worn by hotel staff across the north coast - the flowery shirts in bright colours, the long skirts and scarves and sandals. The article evokes a time long past in Jamaica. Of course there are times when the items mentioned are worn but to present it as if Jamaicans are still living like this is not true. You need to only take a walk down the main street of May Pen, Mandeville or Knutsford Blvd or even through Sav-La-Mar, Junction or Happy Grove to realize that jamaicans wear pretty much the same type of clothing you would find in any tropical western society. And yes we do add a bit of our individuality to it like everywhere else. I would also encourage the writer of the above article to take a closer look at Jamaica as our fashion like other aspects of who we are is far more influenced by our history and culture than by tourism. | 3/11/2011 |

| D. M | Hi. I just happened to come across this website and thought it was amazing! I say this because I am Jamaican and I do not wear long skirts and scarves, neither does my mother, my aunts, my cousins, my teachers, my friends, my neighbours, the random ladies at the supermarket, etc. What I am saying is that the information that you have provided is an incorrect stereotype that does not depict a true sense of knowledge about the Jamaican culture. If you have based this website on experience in Jamaica amongst Jamaican people, it means that you were in an area that caters to tourists. The majority of Jamaican women wear jeans and tank tops just as the average American woman does. I understand this might come as a shock but it is the truth and I find it insulting that this is what you are telling the rest of the world. I hope you take this into consideration and correct it. Thank you. | 1/15/2011 |
| brandie boo | dosent Necessarily say why they wear this clothing of choose. | 12/8/2010 |

| Alicia | What a crock this article is...i am jamaican and I know no one who dresses like how you describe. Have you been anywhere in the island that isn't a tourist trap? Thanks for the laugh. But please do some real research before you write about what you so obviously know nothing about! |
11/23/2010 |
| Elaine | I'm not sure which Jamaicaq you are talking about. You obviously have not been home in a long time! | 11/22/2010 |
| jamaican | is this for real? I'm hoping that the author is writing a fictional story of how she thinks Jamaicans should dress | 11/22/2010 |
| Zulema Allen | I like what Anne said. She hit the nail on the head. There should be a prison for this kinda writing and the writer should get a life sentence there! Here in Jamaica we DON"T sew our own clothes unless we want something customize and in that case we go see a professional. I saw a picture of the writer she looks Indian like. I wonder how she would feel if I wrote a misleading article about her country without checking the facts and mislead a lot of ignorant people? | 11/22/2010 |
| Zulema Allen | I'm a Jamaican. What are you talking about?! Is this article fiction? Jamaicans don't dress anything like you describe! Have you even been to Jamaica?! | 11/22/2010 |
| JL-C. | For one thing, reggae comes from Jamaica, NOT calypso, which originated in Trinidad and Tobago | 10/7/2010 |
| kayla | this is great i will use this info on my research paper | 9/5/2010 |
| luciyahelan | I appreciate the concern which is been rose. The things need to be sorted out because it is about the individual but it can be with everyone. I like this particular article It gives me an additional input on the information around the world Thanks a lot and keep going with posting such information. =========================================== |

| Empressolivia | Jamaica originated the REGGAE music. Bryon Lee and the Dragonaires adopted calypso fron trinidad and Jamaicans christened it ...SOCA! Thats a fact! |
3/18/2010 |
| Latty G | I'd like to big up my fellow Jamaicans comenting. We all know know this information is false and misleading. When I first started reading the article I thought they were describing Jamaican people during slavery... Jamaican people are extremely trendy when it comes to fashion...check it out for yourselves and don't be misled |
3/7/2010 |
| Carli | This article is Completly wrong and needs to be re-written, they must be talking about a different Jamaica | 3/4/2010 |
| aspyrre | Jamaica is synonymous with the REGGAE not calypso! | 2/8/2010 |

| Laura | It's obvious whoever wrote this did not get far off the beach. There is poverty in Jamaica and not all people are "comfortable". | 11/30/2009 |
| Emilio Garcia | I LOVED IT! | 10/22/2009 |
| Emilio Garcia | VERY VERY GOOD ARTICLE:) | 10/22/2009 |

| SHANIQUE RAMSAY | I LOVE THIS WHAT IS IT LIKE IN JAMAICA. | 10/16/2009 |
| Juliene Brown | I live in jamaica and I am a Jamaican. To my knowledge, some of the information above is incorrect. Men in Jamaica do not wear skirts! It is no way tradition for women to wear long skirts and scarves as a normal part of everyday dress as was implied. This writer need to get his facts straight before writing. He seems to be writing from a Rastafarian point of view and need to remember that Rastafarianism is only a religion which comprises only a portion of the population. | 8/22/2009 |
| savannah | i love it | 8/8/2009 |
| Dionne Facey | This atricle is a very poor description how the people of Jamaica dress. First all Jamaican fashion is very Americanized. To be more specific they wear the same type of clothes a typical New Yorker would wear during the Summer. People dont walk around wearing scarft on their head nor do they go around wearing red, green and gold( rastafarian colors). These colors are worn as a tourist attraction. Also Bright colors are no, nos. The only time you will find Jamaican who live in Jamaica wearing those colors are if those colors are in style at the moment. Jamaican are very fashionable people who are always on top of their fashion game. henceforth, if you dont want to look stupid among Jamaicans please do not go there wearing things that were described in the previous article. The Writer obviously haven't been to Jamaica; or if she did, she did not go outside the resort touristy areas. |

| Anne | My impression of this article is a dream of what Jamaica could be. In real life Jamaicans do not dress as decribed above. Jamaicans are very fashionable people and quite modern. Jamaicans love jeans, long jeans, jeans shortsand capris. Anthing that is fashionable, you will find almost everyone in Jamaica wearing them. As far as I am conscerned normal Jamaicans do not like the "beachy look"- no bright colourful shirts for men, no lound combinatio, like red and green (except for Rastas), no orange and red etc. if you see people in these they are just doing it for the tourists. Men usually bermuda short, sane colour combinations, and of course jeans and khakis. additionally, nobody wears bandanas unless they are Rastafarians. That is more of a cultural dress, only used at certain events. Perhaps in your American use of the word 'bandana' is what Jamaicans call a tie-head. Most people don't wear this outside of their home. Young guys who hang out on the streets may wear these. but otherwise, it is a no. There is much more I could say but I think you understand well that you have to be in Jamaica to see the culture unfold for yourself. Jamaica is a unique and complex place and the writer of the article has only began to scratch the surface. Experience Jamaica for yourself. P.S. in Jamaica it's not calypso- it's reggae and dancehall. Jamaica is not just another Caribbean island, it is Jamaica. When I really think about it... Let me put it in Jamaican Creole straight: "WHEEL AN COME AGAIN!" |

| MacShevy | Okay so I really had to look at the date of this article and seeing that it was done in '08 I really have to wonder which Jamaica the writer is referring to. John Public: please note that Jamaica has changed rapidly in its dress over the past 20 years. I've been here for more than over 20 years and i have yet to see his descriptions in reality. Sure Jamaicans used to dress like that but HELLO this writer needs to wake up. Jamaicans no longer go around dressed as described. I'm so upset right now because this article was so recently published. The mere content is just incorrect and shows just how much you should trust the information posted by any and everyone. | 4/23/2009 |
| sophia | this site helped me a lot! | 4/23/2009 |
| sheona, PA, USA | what the f? i have lived in jamaica for 17 years and never in my life have i seen a woman in bandana or head wrap or w/e thqat thing on her head is. this is fallacy; you need to visit jamaica darling, trust me. people down there (im in the us) would rather die than go out like that or wear shabby clothing. yes they dress lightly and wear "old" anything in the yard but trust me, when we are out in public we are the hottest set of people. We dress apt to the seasons, occassions etc. This is so false, take it off and stop confusing the innocent minds of people who havent been there. thank you | 4/3/2009 |
| lea | so helpful. much thanks | 3/31/2009 |
| ashlee | you should put pictures | 3/31/2009 |
| Inadja | WOW. I can't believe the descriptions of the women's clothing of Jamaica. That is insane. Calico, really, we use that for curtains, not clothes. And that picture is more of a Muslim style or African type of head wrap. I don't even live in Jamaica and I know this. And the talk of sober colors. The clothing is as vibrant and beautiful as anything can be. Yes, and really do sme research, calypso music? Who in this world does not know Jamaica and Reggae go hand in hand? Does he know who Bob Marley was(is)? Maybe a country singer...not! Very sad article. Better luck next time! | 3/31/2009 |
| jamaicans | this is not how jamaicans dress we dress so much better, your jus jealous we dress hot! and we never never never never wear BANDANAS you awfull lie were wear skinny jeans, plaid shorts, and hot topic clothing . and we wear labels such as gucci, versacie, calvin klein, luious viton,ed hardy ,mar ecko, adidas | 3/21/2009 |
| connor Fahey | i love how they shave there heads! its so cute! do u they also shave their legs? | 3/11/2009 |
| neit | Does the color of dress have symbolic significance? | 2/9/2009 |
| Jamaican Girl | haha...im from jamaica, and the description of how jamaican women dress with headscarves is so not typical...i havnt seen it that much, maybe with older women and only muslims dress that way and its a small part of the population like uh 0.1%..u guys have it soo wrong...thats not a true representation of ALL Jamaican WOMEN...take a trip to Jamaica! | 2/8/2009 |
| Natty | This article should be eliminated from the web. I was just looking for the latest trends - seeing that I am from Jamaica and where I am at now in a first world country is not providing me with that info. I am flabbergast by this information. It is a big misconception for those who have never been to Jamaica. At no point in time do Jamaican wear head dress and we DO differentiate our formal from casual wear. We are a set of people who takes pride in our dress and persons conception of us and I`m sure if other J`cans read this they would be disgusted by the level of fallacy that is displayed! | 2/7/2009 |
| Nats | I am here wondering how long ago this article was written. I have lived in Jamaica for the better part of 25 years and have not a clue about Jamaican wearing head dress as part of our clothing. Jeans is the order of the day for Jamaican women; and of course there is a difference in the formal and informal dressing of these men. This article should state a time factor to these allegations as individuals who have never been to Jamaica or lived there will be misled by this information. Thank God I have lived there so I know that some of what was that is said is nothing like that. | 2/7/2009 |
| Nikki | Only the older generation wears those clothes u describes for the woman (usually people who like in rural area)... the younger generation where thing such as mini skirts with long tight shirrt and sometimes leggins...they wear shorts...hoodies...flats...embelished sandals...short cotton dresses..they practically wear wats in style at the given time...so you need to do somemore reasearch...and take a visit down there to see how they dress etc.. | 2/1/2009 |
| Laura | this is detailed, it might not have what you want, although it gives you a detailed description of the area it specialises in! but if it doesn't have your wanted info then try another website ! | 1/23/2009 |
| sarah | very detailed, helped me loads cheers | 1/23/2009 |
| P Sykes | Completely inaccurate! I'm not sure when you last visited Jamaica, but your descriptions really don't cut it. One comment, although not about the clothes is that in Jamaica the music is reggae not calypso, which is from Trinidad. As for the long skirts for women, that is mainly for the older generations and the more, what Jamican's call 'country' areas. Furthermore, there is most definitely a difference between work wear and leisure wear. Both men and women often wear smart clothing (i.e. trousers, shirts, ties, shirts for the women etc). The Jamaican nation is a proud one and take great care when it comes to their appearance. Your description here does not adequately describe the Jamaica I have been visiting over the last 20 years. | 11/13/2008 |
| jennifer | Ithink the info about clothing worn by women in Jamaica are correct, also that they are hand made. Also about wearing skirt and blouse and scarf of calico, where do you get your informations about the dress sence of Jamaucan?Ihave been sewing since 11 years old and the only time Idid sew by hand is making my doll clothes, as far as I can remember. We are a people with passion for clothes and take dress sense seriously. You make out as if Jamaican are not people who dresses a certain way because of hardship, a Jamaican would go hungry in order to wear the best and do the same for their children. You should rewrite your article but first do some research, have a trip and check out favourit spot as well where you will see how trash we dress. | 7/6/2008 |
| J.O. | This article is very descriptive for when the weather getd hot . But I need all around seasonal information, all the clothing throught the year, during wedding and parties, sports, winter etc. | 5/19/2008 |
