Coconut crabs are called "Ayuyu" by the Chamorro people of the Mariana Islands. This island chain is made up of Guam, Rota, Tinian, Saipan and a few lesser islands. While the Ayuyu population on Guam has dwindled since the 1960's, there is still a healthy population to be found on Rota and the other islands.
I lived on Rota in the 1970's and I and my father-in-law caught one with over a 4' spread. People in the Mariana Islands love to cook them in coconut milk. |
