| Sherry Malone | I think I may have killed a rat snake by accident last night. It struck at my cat then my dog and then me, so I got mad and killed it. When I looked at it in the daytime today, it was 4 ft. long and had large round eyes and it's head was not pointed but sort of squared. The snake had a whitish/yellow belly. He was really fat.He was a gayish brown on the topside.I have no idea if this was his natiral color or not.He seemed to have some splotches in the background but very faint.I live in East Texas. Can you help me identify this snake? |

| Bert Simpson | Comment in respect of this paragraph - "The rat snakes are rather ill-tempered and aggressive by nature and are always ready to defend themselves. Their defense mechanism includes coiling up, raising their head, striking continuously at anything that they can get their fangs to and vibrating their tail. This vibrating nature of the snake often leads to the misidentification that these are rattlesnakes" With respect, that is nonsense. They cannot be misidentified for a rattlesnake unless the person concerned was blind. Also, they are not aggressive, hence their attractiveness as a pet, particularly for beginners. Perhaps the author is a beginner himself? |

| Tom Dunkerton | On the whole Rat Snakes are NOT ill tempered, but some exhibit individual inclinations to defend or flee when approached. I've NEVER been bitten by a Yellow Rat or Black Rat Snakes and have onlt been bitten twice by a Red Rat Snake out of a great many that I've handled. Just my opinion. | 3/28/2009 |
