Michelle I think your article was shallow and uninformative. and why is there a picture of BRAIDS and NOT dreadlocks?! pretty rediculous. 5/18/2010
Roberta ...and I completely agree that the true origins of locs are from Africa, as we ALL are. Every last one of us. Africa is the heart. 1/18/2010
Roberta Actually, the history of "dreadlocks" or "locks, locs" (as they certainly are not dreadful) dates back much farther than Bob Marley and the Rastafari religion, although they should be credited for encouraging and promoting the ideals behind allowing one's hair to naturally lock. Contrary to popular beliefs, locs have been seen in many different cultures including the vikings and the Celts. They are also mentioned throughout the bible with numerous references to the power of one's hair. (Samson's locks were just one example). I do not mean, in any way, to undermine black culture and the influence and connotations that locs represent, but there are many other reasons why people choose to allow their hair to loc naturally.

Also, the aesthetics of locs should not matter, as you say that neglected hair can lead to locs which are "not pleasing to the eye". This may be true, but to allow one's hair to loc naturally, and to understand the real meanings behind the style itself, one must not worry about what is pleasing to the eyes of others. Locs show strength, commitment, and patience. They also demonstrate a person who has tried to cast off the shackles of society's norms and ideals to create a more natural look and essence.

Himmy Correction: Writer, I think more research is needed. Also, to one of the people who commented...I know MANY who locked from "twists"...I myself have locked from braids. There are many methods. 2/9/2009

Andrew Potter Those are braids... 10/18/2008
Carla I think that the author should do a bit more research on the history of locked hair. It gose farther than the Rastas of Jamaica, it goes back to the people of Africa, the Ashantis, for example, look it up. The beginning of anything is in Africa. 10/4/2008
rastagirl twisting does not work to make dreads. if you are paying for the hair salon to give you "dreads" and they make twists, you have wasted money. no kind of dreadlock is instant. They will all take time to mature. 9/16/2008
Barbara The author of this article needs to do more research. 9/16/2008

Mildred Wrong; dreadlocks are traced from Africa and not Jamaica. 2/11/2008
