| E Stewart | There never were four ridings in Yorkshire. The word Riding comes from thriding or thirding i.e. division into three parts. South Riding was a literary invention of Winifred Holtby. Sadly the Ridings are technically defunct. A web site that begins with the statement that there are four Ridings, North, South, East and West is obviously offering misinformation on an appalling scale. Travel Britain: Yorkshire attractions. I suggest you delete the reference until it is corrected. | 3/18/2003 |
