Valentyna The first time I realised I had a gall bladder problem was when I took the cold leftover lamb on a sandwich to work and finished off with an orange. I was in such agony no-one could tell me what was wrong, until I went to my female doctor and she sent me to a a supermarket cafe and told me to eat the fattest fried food and finish off with a chocolate milk shake. On my return to the surgery she made me take a barium meal, x-rayed me and showed me my gall bladder. Apparently it had 'shut off'. Lamb should also be added to "Foods to Avoid" as the congealed fat causes problems. I have since changed my diet, but when visiting friends it is difficult to dictate what they prepare so take my anti spaspodic tablets with me. 1/26/2012
Dee H Your article was the most helpful on the subject. It is informative, to the point and simple. It was just what I needed. Thank you. God bless. 12/30/2011

Courtney Why cut down on/avoid coffee? Coffee increases the flow of bile and it has been found that people who are avid coffee drinkers rarely have gallbladder problems. (This is not true of people who don't drink their coffee black). Just curious. I would have thought it would be good for those with gallbladder problems. 9/2/2011

Veronica I really appreciate all your advice about the foods to eat and not eat. Most sites just give you an idea about what to do and not do and leave it at that.

I have been having an incredible amout of discomfort with my gallbladder and to know what foods I can eat really helps me and it helps with the indecision I feel too.

Wayne Murphy On the list of foods to avoid you include grapefruit. Grapefruit juice is used in a majority of liver flush recipes so why would it be a juice to avoid. Please give specifics. 1/13/2011
Constance Trude I think that this diet for the gallbladder is v e r y limiting. What do you mean by "avoid fowl" is that chicken, turkey etc. Avoid beef, pork. Even legumes.. Does not say anything about fish one way or the other. It doesn't leave much, pretty drastic. Does it work? Help the gallbladder? 12/19/2010

I did, and my aut ins.wont cover this, says its not related from the accident.Yes it was, how can a healtly person have no problems, once they get hit, their head is hurt with post concusion, plus stomach pain, my dr. only gave me pills and lotion.(I had a rash on my stomach, from the asprin, allegic reaction, even tough I ask my(ex)dr. to look at my stomach, to take xrays, ultrasound, he said lose weight. come back in 1`wk.well look and see if its your gallbladder. the next day (ITS BEEN5-6wks)since the accident.I called and demanded an ultasound, isnt that his job?If hed done this te 1st time I saw him the 2nd wk in feb. maybe my auto ins be covering this. He told me I need my gallbladder out. Its been 1wk since the surgery.still in alot of pain. THe surgeon told my mom my stomach was stuck to my gallbladder. wow maybe its cause OF my accident, like when my seatbelt didnt work until after I was hit. My stomach was injured from steeringwheel/seatbelt.ill be finding out from the dr. tues. maybe he'll give me a letter so i can have my auto pay this.otherwise Im getting a LAWYER.i HAD TO USE MY MONEY FROM MY VAN, TO PAY HALF OF THE SURGERY,so I have no car,or no mone for another car. I have to start all over.wish me luck. 4/11/2010

michael thompso dear dr. could you tell me how you do that nuclear test on the gall bladder ? 1/26/2010
Heather I have had several attacks and they are getting more frequent. Plus, many of these lists online contradict each other. One says nuts, this one says no nuts. Apples, no apples --- If it makes you feel like crap don't eat it again! Dandelion Root Tea also works. 1/19/2010
Mark Ok, aside from heredity I have done some thing I thought was good for myself. I drive truck for a living so my lifestyle is not good, to start with. I weighed in at 245lb at 6' 2". I quit smoking. I figured it was time for a diet. I stopped eating after 6 pm and drank lots of water. This lasted for about a month. One day I was driving across Texas and thought I was having a heart attack. After I relaxed, the discomfort went away and I continued on my way. The diet continued and the symptoms became worse. I have lost over 20lb and found out that my gallbladder is enlargedand has pollups. I have major pain in my kidney area and I still have a feeling of a heart attack, (pain in the chest). Everything I have available for me to eat, is dripping with grease. Salads are fine, so thats what I eat. Coffee is out, I guess (yeah right).
Everything good I thought I was doing for myself is the root cause of my health problems. Man, I am glad I started trying to live a better life.

jo crewell On many articles I have read about the gullbladder - from health food - and personal pain- why does the juice from sauerkraut help
my gullbladder pain and problem when cabbage is listed as a food not to eat. Is it due to the process of raw and juice.

bev johnson I am so confused, I have MS and my gallbladder is very badly diseased, I need my gallbladder to be removed but because I have MS the consultants will not do it and say I must try and control it by diet alone, any suggestions to keep me healthy please. 11/28/2009
Amanda Smith This has been helpful. But is there any other foods you can eat? I am having a stress test done my gallbladder because they think the gallbladder is the problem but have not found a test to prove it yet. But I not sure what all I can have to eat. Need help please/ 11/14/2009
susan I thought grapefruit was good for the gallbadder in reduces the sludge and that there was a compond in it that help block fat in the liver? 8/17/2009
Judy This is great information and should be followed by everyone.
We would all be much happier and healthier. As I look around, I see
so many people overweight and of course the junk food is so
popular in our culture and it's cheap. Many don't realize just how
dangerous it can be to their health. My husband is realizing that he
needs to listen to his wife, who has better common sense about
foods and diet.

KJ in AV I've had gallbladder pain for about 6 months. By switching to a low-fat, very low cholesterol diet, my pain is gone and I feel better, in general. However, my gallbladder is still full of stones--one slip off of my diet and I'm in discomfort. When I've lost some weight, I still plan to have my gall bladder removed to avoid complications (like cancer). 7/16/2009
paul hq My General Surgeon has advised me not to eat apples or drink apple juice. He also mentioned do not eat bananas or peanut butter.
Drinks to avoid included coffee at the top of the list. Meats to avoid were pork and turkey. Please advise. Thank you.

L.L.Zerbe What is a stressed gallbladder diagnosis 7/6/2009
Cheri This is exactly what I was looking for. The Dr. didn't even know exactly what foods. Thanks guys, you have no idea how much this is going to help. Have been in hosp. about 5x in year, the last 2x have been in last 2 wks. This dr. wants to help (thank goodness) and is doing tests etc. and suspects gallbladder, and just said "stay away from fat". So thank you so much. 7/1/2009
Cassie I just googled Tumeric cause I wasnt sure of what exactly it was, and the web site I looked at said this : People with gallbladder disease should avoid using turmeric as a dietary supplement as it may worsen the condition. So its cool to season with it but not to take it daily? I got the info from the NCCAM website 6/28/2009
Carol You were a lot of help as I did not know what I could eat after I had my gallbladder out as I was told I could still get gallstones. 6/26/2009

Jean Gentry I had my gall bladder removed 2 wks. ago, yesterday my Dr. said "go and enjoy your life" I had 3 sips of wine before dinner and thought I would cry with the pain which lasted 2 hours. Please help. I love my wine before dinner. Thank you. 4/2/2009
CA McCarthy The gallbladder diet listed above is completely unsupported by actual information. A list of good and bad food does not constitute an informational article about how to adjust your diet because of gall bladder conditions. Considering that the majority of the foods on the bad list are not high fat foods they require an explanation of what makes foods good or bad. Advice such as "avoid foods above a certain percentage of calories from fat" would have been much more helpful than an arbitrary list of food. 3/30/2009
Elizabeth C I would like to know the sources for these diet recommendations. 2/25/2009
Mary Ellen What does coffee and black tea do to your gallbladder? 1/31/2009
Texas Reader I'm having surgery to remove my gallbladder in a few months. I found this article by doing an internet search in hopes of finding what type of diet I should follow to minimize gall bladder pain while I await my surgery. There is no information in this article about the source of the lists - is there any science behind this advice? The author of the article does not have any scientific training that would indicate she has expertise in this field. 1/29/2009

JW There are some foods I don't see listed as either good or bad for the liver and gall bladder. They are: Sunflower seeds, limes, soy sauce, worcestershire sauce, carob, spirulina, dates, pineapple and non-alcoholic "beer". What about these?

Thank you

machelle my mom just had a gallbladder attack and i wanted to know if she can still drink a zero calorie sparkling water beverages or diet lipton ice tea. 11/8/2008
Kerri this article was helpful.. but for you gallbladder sufferers like me here are some other things you may want to try...

Hood fat-free milk that's made to taste like 2% ( I couldn't have any dairy before but this one works for me)

smartbeat cheese- no fat, cholest, or sat fat.. just doesn't really taste like anything but at least the smell helps if you're a cheese lover..lol
Orange juice... better if followed by a glass of water

Baked potato with a little biit of soy sauce on it

All kinds of oatmeal except creamy ones

Pretzels

applesauce

english muffins with jelly

low fat dry cereals

try the original big biscut shredded wheat with a tiny bit of the fat free milk, and a little sugar~ microwaved.. it's a lot better than you would think

salad as long as there's no red cabbage and steer clear of tomatoes.. I used lite blush wine vinegar dressing.. really tasty!

fat free or low fat fudgsicles.. really good and found I could eat as many as I wanted.. no cholesterol or sat. fat in them

saltines unsalted tops.. cholesterol free, low sat. fat

New york brand pizzeria dipping sticks- garlic and parmesan ones.. as long as you limit amount and don't use sauce

half a twix bar a day for those chocolate cravings ( I'm pregnant so I should know..lol)

Baked Apples with boiled carrots .. good together..

Health smart bisquick pancake mix.. cholest free.. low fat.. just stinks there can't be butter

egg whites in moderation

fruit/cereal bars

and if all else fails try baby food.. I was using that until I found some other stuff.. If I find anything else I'll post again.. hope it helps..]

ps some people can have skinless boneless chicken breast.. here's a good marinade

bottle of wishbone italian dressing
soy sauce
Marinate in fridge for two hours then grill.. also pretty yummy

I was looking at first. Just got a gall stone diagnosis and was looking for assistance, not fear. Thank you again.!

Jay Ponsford Thank you very much for your article. I have looked and looked for what kind of food I can eat to help me determine if I really do have a gall bladder problem. Thank you Thank you. 9/11/2008
Sarah If you're supposed to avoid red meat, pork, and fowl... what is left? Where should we get our protein if legumes are also on the bad list? I read that a diet too low in protein and high in sugar can also cause gall bladder disease. 8/22/2008
Emmy Perfect! I've been looking for a list like this for hours! 5/31/2008
Ann Excellent, Thank You. 5/18/2008
ilene This advise neglects to tell people that Gall stones can lead to Gall bladder cancer, at this time it cannot be curred. My father now has gall bladder cancer because he was told to just watch his diet. Do not give incomplete advise. 1/11/2008
