I design flower girl dresses for Fantaisie Kids, manufacturer of hand smocked and embroidered children's wear. Although the age range mentioned is between 3-8, our typical age range is 12m-6x. Once the child is over 6 years old, I like to call the wedding attendant the junior bridesmaid. And if the child is under 3 years old, it's even more adorable since he/she can be pulled on a wagon, or can be carried by an adult. My point is to keep that wow factor, and young children are great for flower girls.
I adore flower girls so much, that in retrospect I would have had 6 of them to match the bridesmaids at my own wedding. The more the merrier...and pictures are so much more vibrant in the end! |

Ugh! You have such good points but are so off on others. I am President of a flower girl dress manufacturer (Pegeen) who prides themselves on great sizing. How do we do this? By making sure we have height, chest and waist of all kids in the wedding. Then you can accurately size the children. Since dress length varies greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer how can you give less than a full set of measurements? Case in point. Yesterday a mom gave me a set of measurements that were 37-25-24 1/2 (height, chest & waist). I asked the mother, was her daughter normal for her age (knowing the type of response she gave me would accurately predict that she goofed in the measuring or not.). "No" the mom said, she's about normal with maybe a tiny bit thick in the waist."
Okay, then I asked - is she in kindergarten or 2nd grade. "Well 2nd grade how did you know" she asked. The clue was that she was normal size, even a bit slight, but with a paunchy waist, meaning past the baby fat of a five year old (which I was positive she was not) and most likely, and this floored my customer - about 51" tall. Well yes, she answered very surprised. "please take her height measurement - like a doctors office would - of a full standing height". Why do we do this? Well, I can accurately predict that her daughter, will most likely need a size 7 even through the middle of summer and that if she would like - we could get the dress slightly longer because her daughter would not go larger than that". Why did I know this - well because I was using a chart that shows me what the average height is for a child with those measurements and build.
To make a dress we need to know exactly how tall. Period. Chest, waist - all extremely important as well - but the rest - every manufacturer has different finished lengths and that 37" by the way was a clue that she would be a size 7 in May for me but for another manufacturer? We all have different finished legnths.
Moreover age = who you hold dear to your heart. A flower girl may be a niece, your own daughter, cousin, future husbands little sister - heck you could have babysat her. If this is your second marriage, she or they could be your stepchildren to be, your daughters from your first marriage once removed. These are little girls and big girls and infants that mean something to you! That's why we manufacture the same dress in sizes 12 months to Plus Size 18 and beyond. Flower girls and Junior Bridesmaids should be chosen by you regardless of an age restriction. If it were then there would be quite a number of kids left out in your special day.
