Sorry, I should have made it clear that I'm English, and that the US unfortunately took over from us Brits in having an imperialist agenda, which continues today - with the Brits now hanging on to your coat tails. Somebody asked whether you won or lost the war. There were no winners, but the US did get pushed out, so that was a defeat, of sorts. Unfortunately, we're still making the same mistakes even now, e.g. the war in Iraq - although I support the war in Afgahnistan because it has the backing of a UN mandate. To the Marine and to all other military personnel who were in Vietnam, and Iraq, I can only guess at how awful it must have been for you, but without intending any criticism of you, I don't think you should have been there. Maybe one day we'll learn! |

This article is evidence that a little information is a dangerous thing! There's no mention of France's earlier imperial role in Vietnam, which contributed to its move toward communism, nor that the Americans initial involvement was to give military advice, rather than military intervention. I've never heard before about America becoming involved due to attacks on two of its destroyers - What were they named? Even if this is true, America's involvement had started well before 1964. I'd leave writing about events as significant as this until you have a more accurate and fuller acquaintance with the facts. |

Thank you Natasha for showing some of the true facts of the war in Vietnam, that is more than most authors do. I was a Marine who served in Vietnam for three years. I think it will be up to future historians to separate the facts from the myths about the war. |

This article contains numerous myths about the war and should not be relied upon as historical data. Example- "Years and years of bitter guerrilla struggle in the typhoid ridden villages and rugged jungles of Vietnam eventually ... led to the victory of the North Vietnamese" The 1972 invasion by the North was 200,000 conventional troops with tanks, artillery, and AA missiles, the final 1975 invasion was 400,000 men in 20 Divisions. That's not guerilla war! Much of the literature about the war is inaccurate, a researcher needs to carefully consider all sources. |

As well as explosive bombs the US air force dropped a considerable number of incendiary devices. The most infamous of these was napalm, a mixture of petrol and a chemical thickner which produces a tough sticky gel that attaches itself to the skin. The igniting agent, white phosphorus, continues burning for a considerable amount of time. A reported three quarters of all napalm victims in Vietnam were burned through to the muscle and bone (fifth degree burns). The pain caused by the burning is so traumatic that it often causes death. |
