13: It is not true that humans evolved from monkeys. Humans evolved from the same common ascestor as monkeys. We evoled from the family Hominidae (or great apes). Orangutans come from the sub-family Ponginae. In sub-family Hominidae, came gorillas, chimpanzees, and humans. By ancestor, about 5.6 million years ago, the family tree split--the Genus Chimpanzee more or less directly evolving into The bonobo and the East and West Chimpanzees. On our side of the tree, Australopiths became Paranthropus and Homo habilus. From Habilus came H. erectus, and from erectus came Homo sapiens. From Homo sapiens came Neanderthals (which died out in the ice age) and us--Homo sapiens sapiens. |
