Tiffaney Weather we want to admit it or not there’s one thing we all have in common with each other; our social standing. It has a lot to do with the people we associate with ourselves in our everyday lives. Only the question is why do we do it. Why do we classify ourselves on a level so extreme and profound that we cause heartache in others that we don’t except? I believe there would be fewer killings in this world if everyone just got rid of labels. Don’t get me wrong I’m not trying to be hypocritical or say that I don’t also label because I do. I just believe that if we honestly gave it a good effort to being nice to each other and not so judgmental and even start accepting or just talking to people we wouldn’t normally give the time of day. When I asked Corryn Waddle what she thought about cliques in high school she had this to say; "I don’t know. I don’t think there should be cliques. I don’t think people should say other people are popular." She’s honestly quite right to. Also when Patrick Horn was asked he said, "There’s to many groups. There used to be just four man groups but it branched off and now there’s way to many."
It also doesn’t help when we have teen movies that express the views and opinions of the media of what the media thinks teens look and act like in an everyday setting. We seem to adopt that view as the rule of thumb for our looks. It’s called mainstream.
Mainstream. We’ve all heard of it, and weather we want to believe it or not we all are a part of it. The Goths who say they don’t support mainstream do when they shop at Hot Topic. The definition of mainstream is belonging to or characteristic of a principal, dominant, or widely accepted group, movement, style, etc. In translation, anyone who thinks acts or dresses in a group setting is apart of mainstream.
So if there is anyone who doesn’t want to be a mainstream addict, wants to be someone who is truly different all you have to do is look different from everyone. Shouldn’t be too hard. See we all have things in common we just need to open up and talk to each other because in a few years it won’t even matter. We all will be functioning members of the working society and it won’t matter weather we are apart of the mainstream or not.
