Abolishing Slavery in America

During the Revolutionary War era, the ideals of liberty and human rights changed the hearts and minds of some slaveholders, who then emancipated their slaves. But the United States Constitution, adopted in 1787, protected the rights of slaveowners, and the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law of 1793 gave slaveholders the right to retrieve their slave property from free states and territories.

cha Georgia was the only one of the original 13 colonies to prohibit slavery at its founding (in 1733), making it unique in it prohibition of slavery before gaining statehood. And the 13th Amendment didn't end slavery, just required that of applies to persons convicted of a crime. Georgia is where england sent all of its criminals, debtors and other people it would rather not have in England. Georgia was the only colony of the thirteen that received financial aid by a vote of Parliament -- the only one in the planting of which the British government, as such, took a part. The colony differed from all others also in prohibiting slavery and the importation of intoxicating liquors. 10/9/2009
Diane this article was integral in the completion of a post-Civil War essay. What the text did not provide, I was able to glean tidbits to complete the assignment. this is true with all the links I have visited on this site. 9/16/2009
Jerome You're wrong. Pennsylvania was the first state to abolish slavery. They did so in 1780. Rhode Island didn't until 1784. Technically, Vermont ablished slavery first (1777) but they were not a state at the time. 9/1/2009
I M. Soburd ~What is slavery?
Common characteristics distinguish slavery from other human rights violations. A slave is:
~Forced to work -- through mental or physical threat;
~Owned or controlled by an 'employer', usually through mental or physical abuse or threatened abuse;
~Dehumanized, treated as a commodity or bought and sold as 'property'
~Physically constrained or has restrictions placed on his/her freedom of movement.

~Are there types of slavery?
Slavery comes in many different forms, some more severe than others:
~Forced labor affects people who are illegally recruited by individuals, governments or political parties and forced to work -- usually under threat of violence or other penalties.
~Slavery by descent is where people are either born into a slave class or are from a 'group' that society views as suited to being used as slave labor.
~Trafficking involves the transport and/or trade of people -- women, children and men -- from one area to another for the purpose of forcing them into slavery conditions.

~What are the conditions of slave homes?
There were many variations of slave quarters, but the basic situation involved the master and slaves sharing the same lot.
~ The rooms were small, approximately 10ft by 15ft, usually without ventilation of some sort or windows.
~A single door provided any light and air entered in the house. There were many variations of slave quarters, but the basic situation involved the master and slaves sharing the same lot.
~Simple luxuries such as furniture were scarce, which meant many slaves did not own beds and would have to sleep on the floor.
~Yet slaves were thankful for the roof over their heads since their many duties kept them busy and out of their quarters. These accommodations were not much help since part of the problem was overcrowding.
