This information is fabulous! My Mum is 80, has been diagnosed with Hyperkalemia and I needed an informative and logical text she would understand in layman's terms. So thank you, this will be very helpful to me! She is on Lithium, Amytriptylline, Diclofenac, and various other meds..I have no idea why her K is elevated other than renal disease. Once again, many thanks for your help. L.S.Forsyth |

Thank you! This helped tremendously. I've been called back to recheck potassium level 5 times in about 6 weeks! I'm getting scared - today they said referring me to a nephrologist. Doc asked if my daily vitamin had potassium - has never said anything about salt or avoiding certain foods! |

Annette - Physical trauma can lead to an increase of potassium levels. As in hyperthyroidism - if that is your thyroid problem - excessive calcium and sodium deplete potassium, your medication could also be the cause. However, only a thorough medical check up can tell you the exact cause. Thank you. |

6 months ago I fell on the ice and completely broke my hip, needing a complete replacement. Recently I went for a blood workup and my potassuim was 5.9. I have since been watching my diet, but since I am rather pretty healty and never had a high level as such, could this sudden increase in the level be due to the fall. I have not other problems or symptoms, and do not over eat on any of the high potassium foods and drinks. Coffee yes, and I have been taking a lot of Advil for the pain and discomfort from the healing of the surgery. maybe 6 to 9 tablets a day. Could the fall make the count go up as it did. I do have a thyroid problem which I take syntheroid for. thank you so much |
