REbekah I think it's hilarious that the Dr. who is telling the patient about her high potassium levels explains it all over a cup of coffee, which I understand is on the no-no list:) 12/4/2010
Veronica I have Lupus Nephritis Class IV, and I will start dialysis in about six months. They told me my potassium is high, but it was recently that I knew how bad potassium is for the kidneys. It's been a week now, and this is one of the best articles that I have found where a "normal" person (with no medical background) can really understand how and why potassium is bad (or how it works).

Thanks for sharing!

Theo Asante Dear Dr.,
I visited the clinic to have a thorough medical test. My results were generally OK except for a rise in potassium level to 6.0 and a slight drop in both sodium and chloride. The Doctor asked if I take a lot of bananas. Yes I used to do about 6 months ago. Now I work in another town where I get oranges. I take three or four full 'balls' of oranges every night. Could that be the cause of the rise in my potassium level? Thanks and God bless.

Lynne Forsyth This information is fabulous! My Mum is 80, has been diagnosed with Hyperkalemia and I needed an informative and logical text she would understand in layman's terms. So thank you, this will be very helpful to me! She is on Lithium, Amytriptylline, Diclofenac, and various other meds..I have no idea why her K is elevated other than renal disease. Once again, many thanks for your help.

michellec Thank you! This helped tremendously. I've been called back to recheck potassium level 5 times in about 6 weeks! I'm getting scared - today they said referring me to a nephrologist. Doc asked if my daily vitamin had potassium - has never said anything about salt or avoiding certain foods! 5/12/2008
Ann Read quiet a few links and this one explains what I wanted to know better than the others.

Rita Annette - Physical trauma can lead to an increase of potassium levels. As in hyperthyroidism - if that is your thyroid problem - excessive calcium and sodium deplete potassium, your medication could also be the cause. However, only a thorough medical check up can tell you the exact cause. Thank you. 10/13/2007
Annette 6 months ago I fell on the ice and completely broke my hip, needing a complete replacement. Recently I went for a blood workup and my potassuim was 5.9. I have since been watching my diet, but since I am rather pretty healty and never had a high level as such, could this sudden increase in the level be due to the fall. I have not other problems or symptoms, and do not over eat on any of the high potassium foods and drinks. Coffee yes, and I have been taking a lot of Advil for the pain and discomfort from the healing of the surgery. maybe 6 to 9 tablets a day. Could the fall make the count go up as it did. I do have a thyroid problem which I take syntheroid for. thank you so much 10/13/2007
