this article was very helpful to me. I have been to ER several xs with low postassium. 2.8. i honestly thought i was going to die. i had severe heart palpitations and my heart rate went up to 145 beats per minute. several days even weeks before i felt extremely tired irritatable jumpy. had crazy thought process while trying to go to sleep. mood swings while awake toe cramps and even cramps under my rib cage. not sure why my postssium drops, but am going to try to find out. since i started potassium pills it has helped a bunch. |

weakness or tiredness
cramping in arm or leg muscles. This is sometimes severe enough to make it impossible to move arms or legs, similar to paralysis
abdominal cramping or bloating
nausea or vomiting
tingling or numbness
passing large quantity of urine or a frequent sensation of thirst
irregular psychological behavior like depression, psychosis, delirium, confusion or seeing or hearing things (hallucinations)
fainting due to low blood pressure
palpitations
constipation
abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias)

My son-in-law drinks alot of soda.Does this habit deplete his bones of needed potassium?He is 23 and is having black out spells.He is also under alot of stress getting his masters and being a manager on his job.He is 6Foot one and not over weight. |

I was recently admitted to the hoospital with a potassium level of 2.1 Earlier at the clinic I wasn't feeling well and asked to have my labs drawn. I found out the next day my potassium level was 2.4 at the clinic and they placed me on potassium pills. I was finally admitted the next day when I had my potassium checked again and it was 2.2.. By the time I reached the hospital it was 2.1
If I waited and just took the pills which obviously were not helping, I could not keep those big pills down what could have happened to me? i think it's normal now. I had them checked 2 days ago.

VERY HELPFUL. My doctor sent me to a foot specialist who said my bad foot pin was heel spur (plantar fasciitis), but did little research. I fit the low potassium profile to a T, and now the doctor is all gung-ho on choking lots of potassium down my throat. Problem is, I have another bad tooth, due to chemo, and they keep throwing antibiotics at me. So now I have thrush really badly, and the potassium stings to high heaven. And I have a root canal scheduled in 3 days! No, they told me very little. What is up with that? |

Well I believe that I had just gone through a vat of low potassium. I had a trip to the hospital because my legs were swelling up and I was having palpitaions, it scared me enougn to go to the ER. They kept me in the hospital for 3 days because of the heart problems in my family. on the day they were releasing me, they came in with a shot. I asked what that was for and they said that my potassium was low. That is all they told me so I did some research and found this site. I found it to be very helpful to my quest on what the hell was wrong with me. I had confusion, and loads of depression. along with the paplpitations. I do not know why the doctors dont tell you what to do to help this problem. Thank you for being here, and giving me all this very important information. |

I was suppose to have a colonoscopy but my potassium was 1.1 and I had to take massive doses of potassium to get it up to at least 2.9. What is going on in my body? Now the labs show my vit. D is so low that i have to take 50,000 units of D 3 days a week. ? Can you help me? PLEASE |

what if someone is a parapalegic (paralysis from breast bone down) and has extremely low potassium? what can be done and what are the effects? the symptoms have been around for a few weeks but doctor's were not concerned. |

Thanks for the article you wrote.I have been in the hospital before with loww potassium and I have it again now.Both times my symptoms have been arm ,leg pain and various shooting pains all over,very thirsty,very weak,anxious , irritable thinking crazy,heart racing and arrythmia,skin changes,insomnia,and more.I never knew until it happened to me that low potassium could effectyou so bad. |

i think that general doctors need to realize the severity of potassium with heart patients and that some of the medications that thay are giving out are literally draining people of their vitamins that are needed to live. |
