shawn Your site is very informative. I have a situation where my son broke his ankle (tib/fib fracture) Dr. put a plate in leg... from day one it was irritating him, since he was 19 at the time the Dr. would not talk to me... Dr. continued to provide pain killers and send him on his way. After seeing his ankle the size of a baseball, Mom got involved... Took him to Dr., and the Dr. scheduled same day surgery to remove plate (claiming it's was just a irritation). As I had already know, it was infected so they admitted my son into the hosp... They never say what type of infection it may be, but we all know (dr. was assuming Staph) They asked if they would put a pic line in his arm so once the results came back and IV Anti Biotic was required they would be ready... I AGREED but had stated from minute ONE there will be NO IV ANTI BIOTIC until the culture came back. During a moment when I wasn't at the hospital a staff admin came to my son asking him to sign some papers, not telling him what they were...NOT NOTE - I advised the nursing staff, surgeon and admin of the hosp, that he was to only be prescribed ORAL Anti Biotic until culture was completed. WELL The papers were authorizing the administration of Vancromycin, which does work for MRSA... He was in a 4 man room - I argued with hospital that he needed to be placed in a clean room, as Staph is becoming a pandemic... His 3 roommates were two older men with respiratory issues and a young man that had broken his neck, paralyzed with a Staph infection! When the culture came back, the results did not show STAPH, but STREP. Therefore he contracted VRE vancomycin-resistant enterococci. This is a rared infection that is highly contagious to anyone with a compromised immune system... The Vancomycin with the 'STREP' Morphed into a bacteria that compromised his immune system (homemade aids) The hospital discharged his at 12:00 midnight once they knew what he had. Sent me 20,000 of Vancomycin for 'Home Care', I obviously returned it but they stated they could not take it back and billed my insurance and was paid...
SO for those out there who break bones, need hospitalization - BE CAREFUL... Don't let doctors do surgery for the sake of doing surgery. Our bodies can heal without the foreign objects in our body. Pay attention to what anti biotic are given and put up with nothing... doctors are not gods, there just people with a different degree... also if you have a similar situation break with surgical plate... demand a vascular specialty come in and confirm blood is flowing properly, and especially in the ankle region, there are three veins that are vital... if any of the 3 are compromised then your blood isn't flowing properly, and anti biotic REQUIRE proper blood flow in order to work... I have my friends 10 yr old son, that now has to wear a halo on his leg because the insurance co would not approve the Vascular specialist to check. He ended up being on IV Anti for over two years and had so many bone graphs, there is nothing left and may lose his leg. I also lost another friend to the same thing... BUT he did lose his leg because these hospitals and doctors don't doctor anymore.. It's all politics. And unfortunately we as the public have to research and monitor our own health.
