liza so,my comments on this is-it should be prevented by japan.however they cannot totally prevented the destruction and loss of life.some safety measures(steps) should be taken like building of tsunami walls of 4.5meters height in populated coastal areas,floodgates and high channels should be build up to redirect the water from the tsunami,a tree cover should be made on the shore.it's a great disaster the country.it losses all the lives.finally,though it's a natural process;and it cannot under controlled but somewhat prevented.so we try our best.so this much.thanks for co-operating with me. 3/20/2011

Peter Owens I'd like to know how the energy/speed & height of a tsunami wave are dissipated or changed as they travel over open ocean, as in say the Pacific.
I note that the pinpoint energy release at the tsunami source, eventually becomes a wave of total length (at a radius of 1000 Km) of some 6000 Km approx.
How is this change in form of energy occur & what predictions of height. speed etc can be made.
For example when tsunami alerts are raised, we should be advised of the probable height of the wave at our location. Too often people are scared & "run for the hills" only to later find out that the effects were barely noticeable.		 3/12/2011

The Reader tsunami is not just one wave. when an underwater event happens that can cause a tsunami, it usualy consists of more than one wave called a wave train. another thing that shuld be made known is that tsunamis are NOT like tidal waves, which unfortunately some people think they are the same. Tidal waves are caused by the gravitational pull of both the sun and themoon. whereas Tsunamis are cused by underwater disturbances. (sorry if i misspelled anything.) 2/7/2011
