Jesus wept at their unbelief. In order to understand this revelation, you must read all of John 11 in context. You will see that the moment Jesus heard that Lazarus was sick, he proclaimed to his disciples that the sickness would not end in death. Emphasis on the word end. Then Jesus deliberately waits two more days for Lazarus to die. Jesus tells his disciples, two times, that he will raise Lazarus from the dead and explains to them that Lazarus had died. They couldn't even understand that Jesus was saying he would raise him or even that he had died, let alone believe that Jesus would raise him. You'll even see that the disciples hesitate to go back to Judea for fear that Jesus would be killed and them along with him. Then upon arrival, Lazarus being dead for four days now, Martha runs out to meet Jesus and says, "If you had been here, my brother would not have died." So she believed Jesus could have prevented Lazarus from dying, but the thought of Him raising Lazarus had not even crossed her mind. Then she claims she knows that even now God will give Him whatever He asks. So Jesus says to her, "Your brother will rise again" Here, even she doesn't understand that Jesus is saying He's about to raise him up. So she answers, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." Jesus responds, "I am the resurrection and the life." In other words, I'm the same one who will resurrect the dead on the last day as well as the one who gives life to all. I'm here now. Why do you believe I will raise the dead in the last day, but you won't believe I will do it here and now? This is why it says, he is deeply moved in the spirit and troubled. In the same verses, He says to her, "He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" She responds, "Yes, Lord, "I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world." Then Mary also comes out and she says the same thing, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." She too did not believe. You must also take note that Jesus had before this, raised Jairus' little daughter and the widow's son. This is why Jesus wept, because they did not believe. Even the people there, thought Jesus wept because He loved Lazarus. And some said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?" Here we see more doubters. Then, Jesus says, "Take away the stone" You would think by now, they would understand that Jesus was about to raise Lazarus, but instead their eyes remained closed. And Martha said, "But, Lord, by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days." So we can see that by saying this, she still didn't know or believe that Jesus was asking for the stone to be removed so that Lazarus may come out. Finally Jesus reproves them and says, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" So they took away the stone and you all know the rest... |

I think that some things we will have to wait until we get to heaven and ask Jesus. Some people feel that Jesus wept because of the peoples disbelief and others feel that Jesus wept because he felt the same pain as Martha and Mary. I know that scholars love to dig in the scriptures because I find myself doing the same thing, but when there are different revelations I believe we must not allow this to cause us to fight against one another but as I said before wait until we get to heaven and ask the farther. |

The question was asked of me, "why did Jesus weep?" and I could not rest until I answered that question. This is a wonderful and very informative analogy of the tears of Jesus at that very moment. Thank you so much for sharing this very well written explanation of tears of our Savior. May God Bless you. |

are you saying that Jesus wept because of the pain of the people? i don't think you looked at the story right. Jesus wept because the hearts of the people fail to believe who He was and what He could do. He didn't wept because He felt for the people or for the Lazarus. He made it a point to come after the time when they said he could not live again. that's whay Jesus came on the 4th day. He could have came earlier but is was meant for Him to come later. If He wept for Lazarus, He would have wept for His own family prior. |

I do Pray that any of our nation's leaders who do not know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior would develop a relationship with Him. Pray that those who are believers would grow closer to Him each day. In The Name Of Jesus Christ I Pray. Amen |
