Kathy I'll keep this very brief. I found my way out because I found very supportive professionals in many different areas. I absolutely agree that the underlying psychiatric conditions need to be addressed. Even if there are no previous or underlying psychological problems, there are certainly going to be some when a person tries to change 'lifestyles'. I worked very hard to learn and grow and nurture myself. I ran into programs and people that were absolutely wrong for me, but I kept searching. There ARE good supportive people out there. It has cost a lot of money out of my own pocket, but I find it to be worth it! What better way to use my money than to help myself! But there are many many many public services. I would encourage others who are dealing with this to keep trying. It is no joke. I got better. It can happen! Don't give up and find support in every which way you can and work your rear off to make it work. It won't take long! Good luck to all ! 10/29/2009
Em I was required to attend 12-step meetings while in aftercare, but they are not for me. And I'm getting along just fine! The key is that you have to be ready 100%, and committed 110% - no one can make you receive treatment, and it's for that reason that I think interventions are bogus: it's absolutely ok for close family and friends to share their opinions and anxieties, but forcing someone into treatment is the wrong approach-- the addict will be less likely to succeed. Ultimately, it's all up to you. You'll know when you're ready. Trust yourself enough, you are not a piece of crap, you are only human. 10/15/2009
Em Try a wilderness program, such as Second Nature or Passages to Recovery in Utah. The most effective treatment I have ever had, and I too agree with the 7 reasons why detox-rehab programs do not work. Wilderness programs will counter them all. I am 20 years old and have 22 months clean, I am currently in college, in a sorority where I am constantly surrounded by drugs and alcohol, yet I never feel the need to use, nor do I physically and/or mentally crave and substance. 10/15/2009
stan I am a 49 year old male who has been in a 30 day treatment stay 3 times.I have also quit on my own many times.I have had over 1 year of sobriety many times.I have had up to 3 years one time.I have to be honest in saying that I don't feel like the 12 step program is really for me.I'm at the point in my life where I'm really ready to give up and quit trying because nothing seemss to work.Any suggestions? 12/11/2008
