Richard Welch Not a bad article, but has some errors. Donnelly was not the first to take the Atlantis legend seriously. Three or four ancient writers believed the story had a factual basis. The Santorini volcano is about 70 miles from Crete, not 10. The Minoan society was not destroyed by the volcano; in fact, the Minoan culture peaked in the foillowing century It was brought down by the invading Achaean Greeks ca. 1450 BC. Far the most probable explanation of the Atlantis story is that it was a supervolcanic island off Portugal that exploded and sank in the 17th century BC (see Roots of Cataclysm, Algora Publ. NY 2009). The gigantic remnant caldera is plainly visible on the seafloor a couple hundred miles west of Lisbon. 1/5/2012

T i dont understand what gives you the authority to claim that poseidon is a myth, "he" can be seen as real as this "God" of yours you seem so fond of, I also dont see why whom someone worships will bring about the end of their civiliastion, and if poseidon is real, and "God's" friend could you now, not be driven to hell for declaring him as myth. As far as i am concerned you can have whatever view you like, but putting down others faiths religions etc, is simply the actions of a scared little child, people are raised from birth to need something to believe in, god, religion, darwinism, etc who they choose is up to them, noone else to dictate.
Besides, I'm an athiest, a smoker, a drinker, and gay... Bring on the end of the world!

Yasir Khan I just liked ur work.I just wanna tell u one thing that what Plato said is hundred % authentic,We can not call him lair or a misguider. If we are neglecting him it means we are neglecting the whole chain including Solon,Socrates ,Critias,Hermocrates.Denying what the pioneers of philosophy said makes no sense,if rest of the principals are authentic so I dont think so he would have been such a personality that who just to boost himself will exaggerate or simply lie.
Our scientists are materialistic they will never agree what Plato said even they have ignore the facts.Despite polishing the positive aspects they are elaborating negative aspects of the issue because they want to befell Plato. If they are denying his Atlantis then they should simply tag him as a liar.
This is a pre planned reaction of scientists just to hide the truth,Why don't they accept that still they are not that much capable to find what Plato said.

CRISISnPoverty who cares about that lost city?
hello? dont focus on the past! move on,.theres alot of places that do needs alot of attention,.a places who is in need of help..

maybe God has a great reason why he wont let us know about those missing places..and he also has the reason why he let those places to dissapear,.maybe because of the great minds of the people who lives in there,.people who wants to have a power greater than him,.
maybe it serves as a punishment.

after wasting ur tym and money just to find that lost city what will happen next?

earth why the scientist are trying to explore the outer space even though they haven't yet finish on exploring our own world(the earth).

or maybe they are done doing it,.and they just have no plan to share it to us,.to the normal people..
im just frightened of some ideas that maybe they knew about everything even the end of the earth,.but they just kept it to their self..for us not to panic..

confused Ideas is it possible that the Philippines is a part of the long lost city of Atlantis?

i mean,.i am just thinking that the reason why the Philippines has Alot of islands and it looks like a broken land into a pieces,.because some parts of it sink under the water,,.
and maybe also thats the reason why philippines has a weird shape..
because,.the philippine itself is a part of the lost city

or maybe i just made my mind so wider,.that it reached some crazy ideas xD

glenn i also do believe in atlantis since it was stated in vintage information of plato. 11/7/2010
rosegem i know that the Philippine Islands were not on the old maps decades before . And, there was a Atlantis. When the atlantis was lost, decades after the the Philippine islands were on the world map. Some says the Lapu-lapu islands is the location to which 10% of the atlantis is obseved. 11/1/2010
Barracud The Philippines is the lost city of Atlantis. Bong Blanco discovered some structures underneath somewhere in the middle area of the Philippines made of metal and area larger than the Ayala Lands. He would like to share this exclusively to those Filipinos who are patriotic and wont dare to sell the discovery to the foreigners. The National Geographic Channel and The Discovery Channel would like to buy his extensive information about the location of the said Atlantis in the Philippines but he never accommodated their intentions. He was interviewed via Mel & Joey talkshow in GMA7 network and he promised he would only show the discovery to those Filipinos who are well concerned about our country. 10/24/2010
Angel Santos Your conclusive statement in the end is so out of place. If you even study basic history of humanity you would understand cultural values and morality, religions, are based on geography. If some way somehow human civilization can somehow endure past its hatreds, bigotry, and survive world wide genocide by nuclear fire. What will future civilizations think from the many wars or geological disasters that happened in our day? Where they bound to happen because we believed in the wrong god or gods? Or instead by the environmental destruction wreaked by corporations driven by greed or needless wars fought so the poor may suffer and the elite may profit? I respect and tolerate people’s beliefs and opinions. But I must say it’s not really professional to make such a out of place statement that doesn’t even pertain to the subject you are writing about. Your last statement brought this whole article to ruins. Perhaps you should rename it "the Wrath of God on the Atlanteans." So people can differentiate between factual information and the abstract. 8/24/2010
Richard Welch The Thera-Atlantis theory is very weak since the Minoans were thriving on Crete for almost a century after the Thera eruption -- until they were brought down by the warlike Achaeans c. 1450 BC. Atlantis was actually just where Plato said: It was a supervolcanic island off Portugal that exploded and sank in the 17th century BC. There is of course nothing left of it to find, except for the colossal remnant caldera plainly evident on the sea-floor (See Roots of Cataclsym, Algora Publ. NY 2009). 7/18/2010
Wes Why do you take a nice story and then have to insert your own answers as to what happened. You have used your own religious beliefs to ruin this. 5/27/2010
Aniah Where is the under water city of atlantas? 5/15/2010
Jessica I thought this was a very well written article, but I must say, I didn't like the way you twisted it around into a religious sermon at the end. the way you said, "Poseidon is a nice myth" is very condescending to anyone who doesn't believe in the same god that you choose to believe in. No one has ever died and came back to tell us what waits for us beyond the grave, so honestly, no one really knows what the true god(s) is/are. 5/10/2010
Adam Very well put together article. The only things i didn't agree on is the way that you made god look like some selfish person that, "wants us for himself" HE is not! and the way that you put down other peoples beliefs, like what you said about Poseidon. You cant expect everyone to know god in the same way. I'm sorry but it is too one-sided, the funny thing is that Christians are the only people that went around the world trying to convert people into their faith and anyone that believes otherwise is automatically wrong. Christianity today is more like a modern day business than anything else... The Bible has been edited republished and revised more than any other religious book has ever been, quite frankly that makes it unreliable. These texts should NEVER be edited or tampered with in any way because what you're then reading is not the word of GOD but a fake. Other religious books like the Quran, Bhagavad Gita, Tripitaka still have the SAME EXACT information that they held for thousands of years. Christianity has also only emerged in the last 2000 years give or take a few centuries whereas religions like Islam and Hinduism have been around for more than 15,000 years. By the way i am a professed "Christian" if you would like to call it that, in the bible itself there is no mention of the word CHRISTIAN. I do not read English versions of the bible, as the bible was not originally printed in English but the Hebrew version as it was originally was made to be read.
Great article and i hope to hear more from you :D
Cheers ADAM

robert dugger this is a good site for looking up info... 3/9/2010
Zachary Nix well this is a very convincing article. the fact that the "atlantians" worshiped a false god might have well made God mad and he could have pronounced judgement on them because of the fact that they worshiped false gods. therefore...the city of atlantis is destroyed and lost to the world but remains as a myth. i believe this to be true. 3/5/2010
billthesuker8-9 does atlantis have mermaids and mermansssssss. and if there are any do they have perhaps shall i say an 8 pack 2/18/2010

Idolphin I am totally confused! 1/7/2010
IDK I defenitly believe in ATLANTIS! 11/16/2009
Brandon, Aus The facts are interesting and the connections between the legend and the minoan civilization... But the final paragraph makes the author sound like a religous nut, it takes away from the integrity of the article. 10/12/2009
Tyler sweet dude 10/6/2009
Richard Welch The Thera volcano was 70 miles from Crete (not 10), and there is no evidence its impact of Crete was very serious. Atlantis was exactly where Plato said -- a ways beyond Gibralter and facing Gades (Cadiz). It was a supervolcanic island that exploded in the 17th century BC. (See Roots of Cataclysm, Algora publ.NY 2009) 9/20/2009
ken min ken bam nice information, interesting read. but by pushing you beliefs on to it what started as a factual bit of text, you polluted it. Everyone is entitled to they're own beliefs just as the people who were alive thousands of years before us. very small minded comment, shocked to see that 8/21/2009
Joey COOL this is a nice websute ! 4/3/2009

ROFL BTW, I wonder if there is a hidden city in the sky? But it just doesn't seem a plausible as a city on the face of the earth. It was just a thought though, an idea. 2/4/2009
ROFL What if Atlants was actually lost in the Bermuda Triangle. We can never find any thing there and we get lost trying to find something there in the process. That could be where the once thriving Atlantis could lie in ruins... 2/4/2009
Here I Am. Makes enough sense. Could be real might not be. I mean Poseiden and Atlas?!?! Maybe the lost city of Machu Pichu. If you are christian and follow god you could say it is the Garden of Eden's gate way. 1/1/2009
itere of course God exists 12/31/2008
lolz -This was a culture that placed Poseidon in the center of everything, everything revolved around him. Every time that you place a false god in the position that God himself should occupy, then it should be expected that nothing nice is going to come about. God wants us for Himself…not something that is false, you might think that this is bad or not fair but just remember, He is the One Who created us after all, so why should we not worship only Him. God, the Creator of the Universe deserves our worship. Poseidon is a nice myth …

your god is a nice myth.
11/18/2008
wobbler god was the creator of our universe hey! Then why is he slowly killing his creation. if all the god squads worshipped our mother earth we would all live in a better place and that is no myth. open your eyes to what is real. 10/22/2008
Your Mom's puss I think Atlantis isn't real because of all the water pressure would push down on Atlantis and break the city.
Also during the earthquake, it would have been completely distroyed.
and plus who would name a city "Atlantis"?
5/1/2008
shaquille wow,thats cool 3/13/2008
Earl I Believe in Atlantis! Why couldn't there be a land mass covered by water. 3/12/2008

3/3/2008
Andrew Cutris In the first sentances you spelled of wrong you put if not of. 2/21/2008
Cocytus I found this to be a nice place to point people to who want to know what atlantis is about. I just have to remember to tell them to ignore the last paragraph as some people beleive that God is a myth as well. 2/6/2008
Sarah sena This is from Sarah sena again but i just think that atlantis is such a beautiful island and Poseidon the maker/owner was a good leader to follow making a home for the 5 sets of twins he had living/with him! 1/23/2008
