Ken Most of us are caught in a perspectival vision. We see the world only from one point of view, and then judge the words and actions of others assuming that they are operating in the same way as us. Yet this world actually has as many perspectives as it does people. As a Westerner who has lived in India for 8 years, I can tell you that there is a reason that we should be treated differently. We come from a land of tipping/gratitude, not a land of baksheesh. We come from a land where it is immoral and unethical to lie, cheat, and steal, not a land that many people thing that to lie, cheat, and steal are simply the ways of the marketplace. We trust more, and are more trustworthy, when it comes to material matters. We don't squeeze eachother as much, and we express gratitude more frequently in the marketplace. We are better customers than Indians. If we need help, it is simply man needing help, not our way of life. We don't come to take from shopkeepers, we come to exchange. And the ones who get to know us well strongly prefer to do business with us. We have many imperfections, no doubt, but where we are weak than I wouldn't say it is racism if you were to give preference to an Indian. For example, you might prefer to do business with an American but marry an Indian woman. That isn't racism, that is common sense (if it applies to you). If you want to pull out the racist card, then think about how much extra everyone charges us in India for everything. A 10rs rickshaw ride becomes 20 for us. We call it a skin tax. Is that racism? I don't think so. It is just another learning, that we don't know the prices and that we have the extra money to spend. Indians squeeze Indians. You likely squeeze the richshaw wallah- not spending one rs more than the lowest possible price. And then you want to be treated with the same respect as a group of people who often pay 50-100% over the local price. Think about it. Why do you deserve such respect? 11/21/2011
Yash Firstly good & honest (they are rich always) people get respect everywhere. One day I went for taxi from Dubai Airport to Residence. Some white people behind me But two Indian taxi Driver fighting to take white people than me. Because may be they get good tips from white man than me. Don't consider this is racism, only money talks. Thanks 1/21/2011

Jebin Roy, I completely agree.Ive had similar experiences in Mani pal, Bangalore, Mumbai, Gokaran( Om Beach and the surroundings and I feel the same.
At Gokaran, Ive had a few foreigners(French,Finnish,Swedish) who I had befriended only that night I had met them argue to people refusing to serve me at those cafes because I was Indian, and looked quite Indian. Can you believe that? Foreigners fighting for my rights in my own country. Not that I did not want to make sure they served me.But how could I?.It was my own people treating me like I was an outcast.Of course they refused me a place to stay. They just refused to serve me.
It felt much better when my foreigner friends joined me on the beach to spend the night till day break.
Anyway, thank you for this article .I thought I was the only one who had this experience.

truth You are a nut and bad writer. 6/4/2010
NINAD you hate osho too much to notice the real deal in him...every tactic he used had a lesson, reading this, try reading His books, not About him on the internet, that is junk...try reading his works...take care... 4/1/2010
sorry This is completely incoherent.
Haven't a clue what you're writing about.
Are you on drugs?
2/14/2010
joshu the writer is a funny sort of a guy full of complexes and is whining whether it warrants or not, take a look at your self, you are a terribly boring writer 2/13/2010
Siddharth You're definitely right about the reverse-racism thing. I work for an American software company in Pune. All my peers will agree with me when I say our managers are only interested in pleasing the US/UK counterparts. Real problems go unattended. We can't even take a decision without aksing a hundred questions to the US/UK folks, and you know what? The foreigners don't care for the majesty-treatment we bestow everytime they visit- they just want the work done.
I wonder if this same attitude helped the British to conquer India in the first place.
India has Freedom? HAHA...
You can be killed right in front of your house for not speaking the right language and the police won't do sh*t.

ankur mudgal soon there will be an article from my side ,which will negate your observations for the osho ashram ,reverse racism and the osho philosophy . 12/23/2009
Aditya great. this theory of reverse racism is great. All most in all the Ashrams and meditation centres that are entertaining foreigners and places where tourist visit a lot this phenomena is going on... 11/18/2009
Mukta What were u thinking when you wrote this? Osho Ashram or some trash in ure cluttered head? Get a life Mr Lousy, be proud to be an Indian. Be thankful, that you could at least voice your opinion. 9/2/2009
Not-from-pune I don't get it! What are you talking about? What's the link between Osho and the crazy Puneris? Do you want to talk about Osho? Do you want to talk about Pune? Do you want to talk about all the crazies that make Pune their home? 8/22/2009
bhavya that is so true...and u can see this in all the cities here that have foreign visitors...especially those having major religious centers 8/11/2009
ANDREW well yes, thats true and isnt it a mirror behaviour on everyone's part. How would you treat a foreigner (compared to an indian) describes how you will get the treatment when you compete against them . We Indians got a little thingy for the white skin and its everywhere. Its just the sick mentality that any cr*p white sk*n basta*d is better than an average indian. (which i might dare say happens to be true many times). some Indians who lose their head when they look at girls and the way they treat females judge how the whole men community of india is treated. Some p*rverts destroy the reputation and dignity . cant help it. 6/23/2009
andrew cant even write a comment without getting past this ____ 'Profanity Check' . 6/23/2009
shri good article 6/21/2009
shrik crisp & clear. Right on the target. 6/21/2009
doesnt matter loser.. find your own source first.. 5/17/2009
Sukh Mansahian You are absolutely correct but my brother we can't do anything because 90% Indian have slave mentality. 4/8/2009
Anirban I think it is some extreme form of xenophilism, which causes a tendency to fawn on foreigners. Additionally, foreigners are dumber and more polite, at least in India, than us because they aren't aware of the thousand ways they are being fooled and cheated, and owing to India's poor exchange rate, they don't mind if they lose some money either. So, in all major public places, a foreigner is a better investment than an Indian in terms of money as well as attracting other foreign-fawning customers. So conjuring up words like "anti-Racism" won't help, coz that just means people do not respect their own race or themselves. 3/1/2009
duryodhan nice article !
puneities shud not entertain these bloody jokers !
1/3/2009
Sikander That kind of 'special treatment' foreigners get is not limited to Pune - it is all over India, wherever there are tourists. And the tourists bloody hate it. I'm half Indian but I look 'white', and when I visit India I thank God I wasn't brought up here - it would just be too much of a hassle dealing with inflated prices, and all the other usual Indian tourist hassles. No offence, I love the country. 12/28/2008
Sush Well I so completely agree with what the author is saying. But I feel the above will continue as long there is no balance brought about between the rich and the poor, between the educated and uneducated. A poor ruby seller is not aware which company Infosys or Wipro took over, and if he did also what difference would it make to his like. He still has to make his living selling to the foreigners who are most likely to buy his ruby at a higher rate than a local customer. 12/8/2008
kumar Hi Roy,
i see that you are frustrated with the way indians are treated around osho ashram.i also see that u have dealt with people from different parts of the world at personal & professional level.if i was in your position and wanted some change and if i dont get it from the shopkeeper,i will strike a chord with the foreigner and get the change from the shopkeeper through him!
it can work!

Dr. B Ching So what's your point? Basically I can't see anything negative about Pune, I think it's maybe a case of sour grapes maybe! 3/27/2008
DIXITKUMAR U HAVE SEEN ONLY OUTERSIDE GO IN REAL MEDITATION ,WHY U SEE THE PEOPLE ,PEOPLE HAVE NO FACE SEE THE REAL FACE......... 11/22/2007
