Cathy Colwell You can also add to watch their breathing at rest. Get familiar with what their sides move like and how the nostrils are not moving when breathing relaxed and comfortable.
It will help you know when they are over heated,( during workouts their nostrils will move in and out but walk until they are back to a normal rythm and not stretching them out to take in air, that is when they have cooled down again .)if they take too long to recover , more than 5-10 mins they have been over worked for the condition they are in .
IF you see then in the stall or paddock doing this they are having trouble breathing, they are over heated, or in pain.
