"Ranging from Mathematics to Engineering and from Agriculture to Industry, these inventions have contributed to the betterment of human race."
Also, aside from the chief four inventions of the sextant, compass, gunpowder, and printing press, China's isolationist foreign policy could hardly be described to be helping humanity overall. Those are four very important inventions, but in comparison with what the West has brought China in the last 200 years, I think pales in comparison. |

Engineering - Iron was being processed in Egypt at the same time. Iron's extremely abundant, and the only problem was making it into a kind of steel using available technology. I take issue with the "Chinese" making steel. Rather it was being refined from a process developed in the Lavant by the nomad tribes in China, but were far removed from current Chinese culture.
Your comment about Bessemer is infuriating because he did not invent steel. He invented a process where one could inject oxygen into iron to easily make a steel. He was an innovator, not the father of the steel age. Steel's been around for centuries as you've noted, and no one aside from you has ever given Bessemer more than his due.
Mechanical clocks MIGHT have been invented in China, but advanced mechanical computers were developed by Greece off the island of Crete. Not only that, but the greeks invented pneumatic pumps, steam engines, and complex mechanical calculators to find the (accurately mind you) the position of the sun and moon. Look up the antikythera mechanism. You may find it enlightening.
Papyrus scrolls were again developed by Egypt, so China's late to that party too.
Paper money itself is not really that cool. The fiat system is a much more complex and abstract system, but ok I'll give you that
Greek Fire was used by the Byzantine navy as early as 750 AD
Pascal still defined modern computing. Say what you will about whatever chinese guy, but it's Pascal's model we use.
We still invented the computer in the 1880s. They can have their abacus.
Now to be fair, I do respect Chinese advances such as gunpowder, compass, movable type, etc. But when you yourself as an historian disregard historical evidence to such a frightening degree, you actively destroy my history and my culture. It's your job as a historian to provide as much unbiased and (dare I say it!) well researched arguments as you can so that this kind of (frankly) stupid commentary is something the world can do without.
I suggest taking a world history class sometime. Or for God's sake question what your taught on both sides of the argument. |

Hello: Thanks for an enlightening article highlighting some ancient Chinese inventions. It appears that the information in most history books are biased and invalid. Those books should be revised. The Chinese are great and the future belongs to them. Ikey Benney
