A. Person Regarding "A person suffering from schizophrenia is not a violent person" is inaccurate. The rate of violence in the popluation as a whole is not small, and schizophrenics have a slightly higher rate, on the average, according to Monahan.
The other two about development are also inaccurate. Long term followup studies suggest that people who later develop schizohprenia probably start out with a half a standard deviation less than average IQ and after schizophrenia onset have about a full standard deviation less. Golden did a neat factor analysis of about 300 schizophrenia folk who had been given the Halstead Reitan battery, and found some subtypes score quite poorly, and to get normal neuropsych scores one needed to have an IQ in the 115 to 120 range. Cognitive deficits is seen as both a primary marker and a solid predictor (more cognitive deficits, worse outcome) in schizophrenia, and currently various drug companies are working on drugs to improve the cognitive deficits.
