XViiOlEtX My turtle are small but i have 2. one is biger then the other so i think the biger one if a male but its light colored the other one is smaller but darker and much more spots on its belly. and so how can i tell if its male or female? what do they eat? when i carryed it, it didnt even try to bite me. does that mean its a plat eater? 5/9/2010

Mommy Good Evening, I was told the turtles that are kept as pets carry diseases. I bought it from the flea market Nov. 17, 2007. He seems to be doing fine. I have changed his tank from the one he was in when I bought him, to a plastic shoe box, to a 10 gallon tank. We like him. We have another one from the same place we bought the the first one. jelly ok, i really almost forgot this reminder, an important one - really. pet turtles are for us turtle keepers kind of cute, but they are not dogs or cats, so turtles don't like to be handle a lot. other then handling on occassion, and taking them out for a thorough home cleaning, they should be left alone; enjoy them by looking at them, because turtle behavior is fascinating! Last, but not least, whatever you do, do not, i repeat, do not "KISS" a turtle. turtles, like most all reptiles and amphibians for that matter, are natural carriers of the salmonella bacteria. So make definitely sure you wash your hands with very warm water and soap - i mean WASH your hands thoroughly. please don't let this fact keep you from considering turtles as pets; turtles are a class act as pets. birds carry salmonella, yet i never heard anyone shunning them and believe it or not, even dogs and cats can carry the salmonella bacteria and i hear no outcry about getting rid of dogs or cats, so enjoy your turtle. 9/18/2009
jelly oh i almost forgot, feeding a turtle is probably the most fun part of turtle keeping. Most freshwater turtles are carnivores and insectivores. if one can't provide goldfish, earthworms or crickets, go to any reliable pet shop and buy some high quality dry food like "reptimin by tetra," gee, i hope i spelled it correctly. and another thing, water turtles, like red-eared sliders, feed when they are underwater - i think being submerged help with the swallowing of food, correct me if i'm wrong ok. 9/17/2009
jelly i agree, most north american freshwater turtles do make good pets. however, they do need proper care. an outdoor pond would be ideal. for those turtle keepers who prefer indoors, then a large long fish tank should suffice ( at least 20 to 40 gallons to keep one to two turtles happy). don't forget, in addition to water, to place a piece of driftwood or stone so the turtle can bask and a basking lamp and a ultraviolet lamp are necessary as well. an outside power filter helps to keep the water clear, if not, prepare to do some weekly water changes. a fish net helps in removing a turtle's sometimes lumpy "dumps." for folks who live in more cooler climates, a submersible aquarium heater helps; and don't forget a water thermometer. some might think this setup to be detailed. but it really isn't - don't forget, a happy turtle is a healthy one. 9/17/2009
