What to Do if You're Listed in ChexSystems

Banks and credit unions use Chexsystems when people apply to open a checking account. It's essentially a consumer reporting agency designed to check if people have a history of writing bad checks. Here's how to beat them at their own game.

Jack Thanks for your article. Last summer I found Washington Mutual and opened an online account there but there was a catch. I live in Buffalo NY and the closest branch means a 1200 mile round trip to New Jersey! The Google ads on your page led me to a listing of no ChexSystem banks and lo, and behold, there was M&T, one of our local banks! I successfully opened a local checking account INCLUDING a Visa debit card.

My wife and I had tried to open a checking account with a S&L a couple of years ago and got shot down on the debit card credit check which shot down the checking account, too.

Anyway, thanks for writing this page. Had you not, I would not have a local checking account!

Maya What if you have 3 bank accounts and one of them was mishandled and was reported to ChexSystems, what happens to the two accounts that are in good standing? 6/2/2008
Candace For information on how to get a checking account opened regardless of your record with chexsystems, call 866-757-5970. This bank will bank everyone, so each person gets a fair second chance. Accounts can be opened for individuals in any state. 4/5/2008
