Cheryl We are having our ceiling scrapped tomorrow, and I have dust masks I can wear. I am not doing the work, but I am concerned about the ceiling as this place I rent was built in 1964. What can I do to protect myself and my indoor cat? 5/9/2011

MC Hello,
We are buying a house that had popcorn ceiling scraped and painted. But it looked like the work of an amateur (ceiling not flat) so we don't think it was done professionally. We are worried that asbestos is now in the air. What should we do now? Can we just repaint the ceiling to seal off the remaining asbestos? What about asbestos already in the air?

Paul Cody One of the best articles on this subject I have seen in the over 30 years I have been in the Ceiling and Wall Industry. I worry about my health as I use to spray on Popcorn Ceilings in the 70s and 80s.
I do Texture Removal in Vancouver Canada and I come across a lot of young family home buyers
worried about the health risks to their children from their ceilings, especially in older homes.

J. K. Good info. when I was growing up I lived at my Great Grandmas' house and we used to scrape off the popcorn ceiling- it wasn't until recently that I found out that it contained large amounts of asbestos. Years of daily exposure can't be good from your health! And like I said earlier this was Good info. you provided! 7/2/2009
Bruell the government took sales and labor taxes when the popcorn ceiling was installed.
So i think the government should help to pay for the removal and disposal!

Lindsey I removed a popcorn ceiling for a friend of mines entire house. I was unaware of Asbestosis and the horrible things it can do you, later in life. My qustion is: Since it is after the fact and I do not talk to this indiviual to find out how old the home was is there a medical way to find out if I indeed inhaled enough asbestosis to be concerned? 4/22/2008
Jeannie wagner Last week my son took down the pop corn ceilings in two rooms that were taped off with plastic. But i went in there quite a few times to film the procedure and the dust was very fine and even though we took great care there is a fine layer on the books and book shelves from when we took down the plastic, shaking the dust to the middle and folding the plastic in to trap it. I did not wear any mask during any of this---didn't know of the asbestos---I thought that was outlawed years ago. The medical news on ABC or CBS or Fox should make this known. I have started coughing and have developed a raspy voice that comes and goes. How much does a test cost and is it worth it now that the contamination has already happened? 3/14/2008
