Bob Moore We are a long ways from 1985 when I received high doses of prenisone for 2 weeks. I had an adverse reaction. Could you give the conditions for high dose in 1985.

Einar Gjestland As I have recently been cured of asthma after having had it from age 68 till 79yo, I resorted to taking Prednisolone again when I noticed slight recurrence of symptoms (3 months later) - Incipient wheezing and coughing. The Prednisolone stopped the problem and I just wanted to be aware of any side effects if I need to take the medication again. Bruce Campbell I have experienced a loss of taste of almost any food or drink for that matter after taking a decreasing amount of prednisone starting with 12 in one day. I took a total of 41 pills. I don't see that as a reaction to the drug. 2/5/2011

Vathana My 30 yr old pregnant wife (23 wks along) was diagnosed with low platelets counts (~27K) and was prescribed 50 mg/day tablet of Prednizone. She has taken it for 5 days now and it has caused swollen feet, increased apetite, and severe itchiness all over her body. In addition to Prednizone, she is on 2.5 mg/day tablet of Methimazole for her hyperthyroid condition. Other than this, she has no other health issues and is a very active/healthy person.

1) Is Prednisone safe to be taken during pregnancy?
2) What is the longest clinical safety data on Prednisone? In other word, it is safe taken long terms?
3) Has there been documented cases of miscarriages or effect to the baby with Prednisone?
4) Has Prednisoe-Methimazole study in combination?

Joyce Ann Maggi very informative. my grandson who is two years old, has had respiratory problems since birth. he now has asthma. he has been prescribed to have nebulizer treatments, two days ago his peditrican added a prednisone drug, last night he was thrashing in his sleep. and other symptoms which appear to be side effects of prednisone. he is in emergency room now. can you tell me what medication is used to treat his reaction to prednison. he is a very small 2 yr ole. thank you, 12/30/2010
Angela This is a response for Gwen. I have been taking 5 mg prednisone for Addison's disease for 8 years. Before that I took a divided dose of cortisol. I switched to the prednisone because it has a longer lasting level effect. Many of the horrible side effects of prednisone are not applicable for someone with Addison's because your body needs the steroids. However, I gained a terrific amount of weight over time, have 90% reduced libido, a buffalo hump on my upper back. I switched back to cortisol, which is the drug of choice for this problem. I am hoping that with time those negative changes will reverse. Addison's is a life and death situation. Do not delay treatment. 12/19/2010

Nancy Laurie (9-15-2010) re: your quesiton about high blood sugar. My husband had maga dose of IV steroids in hospital for 4 days, immediately had high blood sugar & was treated with insulin. However, when steroids were stopped, blood sugar went back to normal. Doctors told us, if you have a predisposition to diabetes, there is a chance you can get diabetes from Prednisone which will not go away. 9/25/2010

Sharon On Prednisone for Severe Asthma (that had worsened with an outdoor allergy resulting in Moderate to Severe Restriction of Lungs) to help the inflammation. 30mg for 15 days in decreasing doses... 30mg for 5 days, 20mg for 5 days, 10mg for 5 days. After Day 3 - Insomnia. Can't sleep at night. This is VERY typical. Just watch out with severe sleep deprivation especially continuing for weeks, cause you don't want psychosis on your hands (not sure how common that is, but mix Prednisone w/ another drug that has same side effects, like Theophyllin, Theodur, and you have the perfect making for that. Tell your Doctor if you are really having hard "disruptive" sleep problems for many hours during the night for several days. Something I'm experiencing using this RX that I'd not had before when I was younger (I'm 45 now)... I'm wanting to eat like crazy after Day 3, have horrible headaches, and sometimes some abdominal pain when it peaks (2 hrs after taking it). Thankfully, the use of the RX is temporary. :-) Having said all that, it's still an amazing drug for many illnesses. Sometimes the benefits outweigh the risks. 9/21/2010

Claribel In 2004, (age 14) I was given Prenisone as a first choice for renal disease. I was on it for about a month, with no progress in my condition- just the horrible side effects. I gained about 30 lbs, stretch marks on my stomach and thighs, and acne. The dr changed my meds to Cell Cept, which stabalized my kidneys. In March 2010, my kidneys relapsed, and despite my hesitation, my current doctor went directly to the Prednisone. I reluctantly agreed to start taking 60mg daily, on Aug 11 2010. Although the weight gain is not as substantial as the first time around (ONLY because Im already trying to monitor how much im eating)...EVERYTHING ELSE is a million times worse. I cant be on my feet for more than 3 hours, because my legs get enormously swollen, my face looks horrible, my skin is burning, my mouth and throat are constantly dry, i feel drained, fatigued, and depressed. Ive been gaining and losing hair in all the wrong places, and needless to say these things all effect my personality and mood. Im begining to wonder if this medication is worth the "benefit." and can I refuse to take this medication? It didnt help me in the past...and I dont see it doing anything successful now. 9/15/2010

rita i have been taking prednisone for about two in a half years and now i notice a lot of different thing occurring to my body, the first year that i was taking the prednisone nothing was happening to my body ,but now i have began to have so many different thing going on with me, first my hair started to thin and break then i begin to have a burning sensation in my mouth and everything that i tried to eat that was to cold, hot, or spicy hurt, now i have this bloating in my stomach. my doctor has decreased my medication from 10mg a day to 71/2mg a day and he is going to continue to go down with each visit, but i thing that the damage has already been done to my body. do you thing that i will ever feel like myself again. and by the way i have rheumatoid arthritis and tha prednisone is the only medicine that i take but it is doing more harm than good 9/14/2010

Laurie someone asked if Predisone could cause heartburn and my Doctor says it sure will and in fact told me not to use ASA or like products while on it. I am being treated for Temporal Arteritis,and have been on Predisone for 4 months. Starting dose was 60 daily. I had a neg biopsy and now the rheumotologist I have been sent to thinks I may not have it? and he is tapering me off the drug. I am now on 12.5 a day and really afraid that if I DO have TA that we are doing the wrong thing and I could loose my vision. I have pains in my head, I can't really call them headaches because they only last a few minutes and then go away or move to somewhere else in my head. The biopsy sight is still ( after 4 month) sorta numb at times and hurts other times especially if I press on it. Has anyone else had these symptoms? my blood sugar is just awful but glubride just bottoms out my sugar. Don't know what to do. Will be starting on10 daily next week and by the way, I have lost weight! I am so afraid to eat because of the high blood sugar or maybe my disease, what ever it is is making me loose wt? Adda Davis I have been on a 12 regimen of Prednisone and could not sleep, was constipated, had blurred vision, headache, upset stomach, and almost fainted twice. this last was after I had finished the regimen. I was taking it for an inflamed nerve in my head which affected my balance. I think that is better but I feel terrible in other ways. Elizabeth Re: Laurie in May 2010. I've also had temporal arteritis, aka giant cell arteritis. My first ESR was 118. Like you, I began prednisone at 60mg daily. Then reduced 5mg monthly to about 5 or 10. When I got the polymyalgia rheumatica that a quite large percentage of temporal arteritis patients get, I went back up to 20mg though 15mg might have been enough. -- The prednisone made my osteoporosis worse and, not knowing the extent of the risk, I moved some furniture and got 8-10 back fractures. Prednisone side-effects ran the gamut of those cited, including 40 pounds weight gain, cataracts, lightening mood swings early on, and later on the blahs, and incontinence, The whole thing is supposed to go away in 2-5 years. I'm waitin' ! Still, I'm told prednisone in this case, saves your vision and prevents some other real uglies like heart attack and stroke. Laurie Joyce, I too am being treated for giant cell arteritis and am on predisone 60 daily for a month now.My sed rate was 130 when we stared treatment, and they will begin to lower the dose as my lab work improves. Dave Can anyone help me? my ear doc put me on prednisone for a slight ear infection. i was on it for about a week and a half. he then weened me off it a bit and now im not taking the drug. However i woke up today feeling like my foot is broken. I can barely walk on it. it feels like i have an extra bone coming out of the side of my foot. me i took prednisone low dosage due to 2 different types of rashes that developed one on my upper back, (i spread everywhere by itching) then one on my neck. This medicine made me a maniac, i felt like i had bugs all over my body including scalp and body. I stopped taking and now my rash is going away slowly i had more complications due to the itching from the little prednisone. they say it is a god sent not for me i will never take it again. Patricia My doctor put me on 10mg. of Prednisone, two pills once a day for two weeks I started taking it on Feb. 13th of this year.Since then I am not really hungry but I am caving sweets like crazy. Louis I have been taking Prednisone for 2 days now and almost immediately began having intermittent hiccups. They just start and stop without warning and are often accompanied with indigestion. The hiccups and associated heartburn have waken me from my sleep multiple times over the past two nights and keep me awake at least an hour each time. Gordon Im an 18 year old Male, supposed to be a fun time being 18 and all….but boy has prednisolone stuffed up my last year or so. Maybe i just react worse to this drug than some people, but the way its hit me has to be lived to be believed. The irritable uncomfortable feeling (even when your trying to relax on the couch), the anger and mood swings that are constant, the weight gain and wanting to eat all the time, the insomnia which makes you feel even worse for lack of sleep, the gigantic swelling in the face to make a once normal face a horror show, the fever which is so often there, the acne all over my body, the lack of confidence I now have, the depressing way you now interact with the ones you love, and one of the worst things to go through, the looking back and remembering how good it felt to be normal, and not knowing if you will ever have that feeling again..hmm i think its fair to say anybody on this drug for a fair amount of time has been through hell. 1/7/2010

Alice I am a little familiar with Prednisone because I have Asthma and Bronchitis and my doctor suggested I use this drug for about a week. It really helped me because I also have Rheumatoid Arthristis and Osteoarthritis. I've had two hip replacements within the past two year and feel better from them however, lately I feel like I want to be back on Prednisone because I just ache all over, every joint and my lower back. Doug I am a sixty eight year old male and I have been on Prednisolone for over a year now, as treatment for Abdominal Aortitis (Inflamation of my aorta, which was constricting both ureter's coming from my kidneys to my bladder.The inflamation is very slowly coming down now, but I have to have stents in place to allow the urine to flow smoothly My consultant has recently reduced the dosage to 5mg, twice a day. The side effects are unsightly red blotches on my arms, watery eyes, a runny nose, bloated stomach & face, with significant weight gain and constipation. I am also retaining fluids despite being on water tablets. Anyone else been treated for aortitis and are these side effects normal. 11/16/2009

jen napolitano Well atleast I am not the only one that has dizziness/vertigo issues with after use or during use of the Prednisone. I take Meclizine now off and on due to being on it too much. And most ot the time I have to walk with a cane for the balance issues of the dizzies. 11/10/2009

Anne I had a severe bout of asthma starting in July and on high doses PO steroids than IV steroids during two hopsital stays. Discontinued oral steroids 9/25 after very, very slow wean and two weeks later began experieing terrible edema in my feet and legs (up tp 3+ pittiing and my fingers and arms edematous and feeling very 'heavy". I diuresed and it h as continued to come back and now seems to be a permanent condition- arms still heavy, fingers too large for jewelry,, watches digginto my wrist, unable to wear many shoes, feet painful and entire body just aching- especially shoulders hurting so much can hardly raise over my head to dress. cardiology workup clean. Doing accupuncture, asian herbs, proteinsh akes ( nothing w/large Na+ amounts, etc). Can't explain edema. My PCP just gave me more diuretics but need a medical explanation for edema explanation OFF prednisone. Predinsone probably affected my joints. Any other ideas? Tx 11/6/2009
crystal I had an allergic reaction to the h1n1 vaccine and they prescribed me prednizone for 7 days. This is now my 7th day and my chest is hurting. I am only 22 and I don't know what a heart attack feels like, but it feels like someone is driving a stack through my chest and twisting it. jim D I take prednisone for Myesthenia gravis in my eyes, i will have to take 7.5 mgs for the rest of my life or if I don't I will have double vision. Andrea I was on a 5-day dose pack for sciatica pain 5 weeks ago... since going off I have experienced first numbness and tingling in my face, and neck and then it travelled to the rest of my body! Jim H prednisone gives me a strange reaction mainly in my legs. I may wake up 2 to 3hrs after taking and if I move my legs slightly it throws my legs into a severe cramp. It is difficult to break the hold of this cramp as it violently straightens my whole leg out into a tip-toe position which can only be broken by applying a great deal of pressure against my foot. I found that this is minimized if I do a light cardio work-out on my bike prior to retiring for the evening. 9/6/2009

Prednisone was given to my husband when he was in the end stages of Progressive Systemic Sclerosis (Systemic Scleroderma), and while I appreciated the effort the medical community was making to prolong his life, it did not do that but DID reduce and negatively impact his quality of life in those remaining weeks. 8/21/2009

Annette Thanks Lynette for understanding and support. I wish you the best also. Yeah, this prednisone is horrible. I just got weaned down, again, to 30 mm. Breathing got worse again. So, the doctor put me back up to 40mm. I am beginning to wonder if maybe I should get a second opinion. Seems like this doctor is just masking my COPD/asthma/Emphysema and not trying to find a solution. I am getting so frustrated. I have been on it for so long going up and down. But whenever I go down a few mm, I am back in emergency or hospital. I am terrified to not take it because the last time I got an asthma attack, it just came on suddenly and everything just shut down. I stopped breathing altogether. D Haddock My husband is a recent diabetic Type II and taked Humalog and sliding scale. He also takes predisone and a multitude of other medicines for an unrelated illness. When he takes the insulin and the predisone at the same time his blood sugar bottoms out. Has any one else experienced that? The effects are worse when using the pen as opposed to the bottle. Betty Lloyd I have used Prednisine for many years for a lung condition called aspergilolous. Any time I try to go off of it I wind up in the hospital. The side effects I experience are mostly hip and shoulder soreness, fatigue,and profuse sweating, sometimes a feeling of being well again. 7/29/2009
Lynette I feel your pain, Annette. I've had a kidney transplant around 11 years ago and about a month ago, my doctors found Lupus activitiy in my transplanted kidney. I do have Lupus, but it has been dormant for years. So, the doctors started me on IV steroids, then with the Prendisone at 60 mg, then 40, now 30. It's horrible. I can't sleep unless I take a sleeping pill. I have heartburn. My face has swelled and I have been irritable - not like me at all. I hate it all, but I really don't have a choice since I believe it's working and my numbers have been stable. My husband hears this every day. Poor Kev. I just can't wait until I can get weaned down to my maintenance dose of 5 mg. I wasn't having all of these problems then. I just wanted to share and I wish you the best. 7/27/2009

Annette I have been on Prednisone on and off for about 3 years. My COPD, Emphysema (asthma) is really bad. In the emergency room and doctor's visit I am usually given 2 syringes of liquid Prednisone intravenously Then I begin a series of 60mg for a few days then down to 50mg and so on. Whenever I finally get down to 10 mg, the breathing gets hard again. Then back to emergency to start it all over again. Alot of times, I am admitted. The side efects are horrible. I gained 100 pounds eating, extreme thirst, irritability/aggitated, depression, thinning of skin on arms with red blotches at the slightest bump, insomnia, ostioperious and vision problems. I have to get a new pair of glasses every year.It also breaks down my immune system where its real easy to get sick like colds, etc. I hate it so much but its the only thing that keeps me alive. Nikki L. TO LANI M. i had poison ivy for 2 weeks. went to the er and they put me on a week pack of prednisone. It started to clear up my ivy, but when i was done with the pack a day later, it all came back. I found out it was too low of a dose for to short of a time. My dr. put me on 40 mg for a week and 20 for a week. Needless to say it went away but make sure you taper the last week. ArtB The doctors think I have Temporal Arteritis and started me out on 60 mg of Prednisone 4 moths ago. Fever went down in 4 hours after the first 30 mg. and some energy came back.
I am now down to 20 mg per day. The most bothersome side effects for me are blurred vision, weight gain and dizziness. I had lost 20 plus pounds during the time they were doing all the tests and have now gained it all back and then some. Anyone bothered with the dizziness like I have?		 6/28/2009
Mary I take prednisone for Lupus and I have experienced the side effects mentioned...the sleepness nights, weight gain, ravenous appetite, swelling in the face and even pre-glaucoma. It lousey and I don't like taking this drug. I'm usually prescribed the drug when I experience a Lupus flare-up which is life-threatening. David Freinds, I just want to share my experience with you. I was having chronic cough. My doctor gave me Prednisone after the CT due to enlarged lymph nodes thinking it is Sarcoidosis. I was on it for 2 months almost. Then I visited another doctor on a friend's recommendation. He determined that it is TB and Prednisone is not the drug for TB. I just would like to advice you that you always go for a second opinion before confirming the disease. Apart from giving me the wrong medicine, he also made me get into the next stage in TB. Lucienne Been on prednisone off and on for eosinophilic pneomonia. I am tired of being on this medication everytime I get really ill. I get irritable and very assertive to say the least. Katelyn I have been on prednisone 20 mg. and at times 30mg. I am trying to wein myself off this medicine. I am taking this because my Dr. believes I have inflamation and constriction the airs passages that carry oxygen to my lungs. I have survived ARDS twice and use inhalers which are steroids. I was having, I am on oxygen 24/7, at present I am down to 10 mg. and hope to get off of predizone all together. When ever I have tried to get off of predizone in the past my shortness of breath returns.
