One rapidly growing concept is in fact animal abuse, or animal cruelty. Animal slaughter is not the only problem, animals are also abused. Although circus training routines are rarely investigated, in many circuses, wild animals are captured, and tormented to do their routines. Animals are whipped, chained, hit, have tight collars, and even burned in order to do their performance. Elephants that perform in circuses are often kept in chains for as long as 23 hours a day at a time since they were born. Animal abuse is not the only problem. It is calculated that 100 species of animals go extinct every day! That's about one species every 15 minutes. More than 15 million animals are used in research every year. Tens of thousands of wild and domesticated horses are slaughtered every year for horse meat in Europe and Asia. Although horse slaughter in the U.S is now illegal, horses are now shipped to Mexico and other places for slaughter. The most common animal abuse in the U.S is Neglect and abandonment. Animals are killed for their fur! It takes eighteen red foxes just to make one coat. And 55 minks to make a mink coat. That is just ridicules. All these slaughterers, abusers, and much more only saw their own benefit. Sure I eat meat, lots of people eat meat, but people slaughter horses, and as soon as it is illegal, they have to go to Mexico, or somewhere else to slaughter more because that is all they know how to do. So, if they can’t go to Mexico, they go onto something like horse slaughter. They go out into a little forest full of thousands of foxes. Within five days half of those foxes are dead and skinned. When it comes to selling the fur, and coats, maybe about over half of the foxes were not red, so nobody buys any, and about over 1,000 foxes were killed for no reason at all. The forest now only has a population just under a thousand. These foxes are becoming skilled at hiding, so the hunters move on to a bigger forest, with more foxes, and clears that one just as quickly. |

We ourselves are animals, which many people tend to forget. It is very hard to gather information to get statistics on animal abuse, because almost all animal abuse situations go unreported, can you believe that. Even though such a small percentage of people that see an animal being abused report it, 1880 cases were reported in the media in 2007. 64.5% of these cases were situations where a dog was being abused. The incidents ranged from neglecting to kicking, all the way up to burning the dogs, often because the dog was barking. I wonder why it was barking. Maybe because of the unsatisfactory living conditions that it has to live with every day. I think it's disgusting to see what some people do to animals, some in anger, and some for fun. I have always been strongly against animal abuse, no matter what animal or human, it is aimed towards. If you're still saying who cares animals aren't people, and only people have feelings, understand this OK. Many murderers grew up as a child abusing and being around others who abused animals, most commonly their pets. It is an early sign that someone isn't headed in the right direction, so they should be stopped before they hurt or kill a human being. Just think about it for a second, imagine you were the dog being abused wouldn’t you want the offender or offenders’ to serve a much more sever punishment like twice as long jail time and some work for the R.S.P.C.A or even work 10 hours of community service. Maybe, just maybe the violent people who abuse or torture animals will reailse "huhh maybe I wont do that again If you still think that animal abuse is okay, I don't know what will help you. And if you agree that animal abuse isn't okay, but don't think those who harm animals should be punished more severely, that's a whole different storey. You should treat all living things as you would treat your child, as they feel emotions in the exact same way. I'm strongly for the rights of animals, and I still eat meat. I know that animals are treated poorly with slaughterhouses, and I don't agree with that kind of treatment. BUT just me alone can't change that. Also, instead of just being against people who eat meat, because honestly I know eating meat is healthy for my body, and being a vegan you can be healthy too, but it's harder to find the necessary nutrients that meat does provide. Anyway, I wish I could change how they treat animals being slaughtered, it would make me feel better knowing that the animal I'm eating was at least humanely killed. It sounds rough, but life is rough, reality is rough. Also, I volunteer at my local humane society to be able to give the voice to those who don't have one. I'm strongly against cruelty, neglect, overpopulation due to the lack of spay/neutering animals and that's what I promote. We have clinics every two weeks so people can spay or neuter their animal so we don't have to deal with overpopulation at our shelter. Right now we have 160 cats (we are only made to fit 90 but we make the room) and 90 dogs. A lot of that is due to overpopulation and we've found that a lot of neglect of animals is due to the fact that people have too many and feel overwhelmed because they couldn't spay/neuter them. I am very proud to say we are a no-kill facility. We will NEVER kill any animal because we are overpopulated- we make room. Even if the cages are in every inch of our facility, it doesn't matter. And I'm very proud to say that because we care about those who can't defend themselves. So keep on protecting these innocent lives because you know what, a life is a life and nothing should be cut short because there's "too many". We need to control the population so those facilities that do euthanize animals won't anymore because they won't have to. Other than these, other institutes where animal cruelty is thought to be rampant is the entertainment industry, especially the circus and film industry. The circus industry is said to have rampant cruelty towards animals. This general concept has now given birth to the thought of a 'animal-free' circuses. Countries like Sweden, Costa Rica, Austria, Finland, India, and Singapore have come forward and banned or restricted the use of animals in circuses. In a recent report, People For Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have come out with embarrassing facts about the circus lives of animals. According to their reports, various prominent circuses do not practice what they preach and indulge in animal cruelty on a routine basis. No institute or individual looks after the training sessions of the circuses. Tight collars, whips, beatings and torture are the order of the day for the animals of the circus. PETA also says that the behavior of the animals during the circus shows is not at all natural, in the sense that tigers don't hop around and then lay down in unison, elephants don't walk trunk to tail and female elephants don't mount each other.
